They feed on fruits, grains, bulbs, shoots, insects, small mammals... Baboons are often kept in zoos.

Roxellan rhinopithecus is a species of primates found on large territory in mountainous and mixed coniferous-deciduous forests in southern and central China. These animals are among the most cold-resistant primates, for which the Chinese nicknamed them " snow monkeys". They spend almost their entire life in trees and, at the slightest danger, climb their tops. They feed mainly (when there are no fruits) on tree bark, pine needles and lichens. White-headed Langur

In fourth place in the ranking of the most unusual monkeys on the planet is the white-headed langur - one of the rarest primates in the world (the number is estimated at less than 70 individuals), found only in the forests of southern China and northern Vietnam. They live in groups of five to nine animals, usually with one dominant male. They feed mainly on leaves, fruits, flowers and tree bark. The body length of males is 55–62 cm, of females 47–55 cm. The weight of males is 8–9.5 kg, females are 6–8 kg. Animals have an average life expectancy of 25 years.

Gelada is a rare monkey species found only on the mountain plateaus in Ethiopia. They are social animals and live in groups of up to 70 individuals, which sometimes combine to form huge herds of up to 350 animals. They spend all their time exclusively on the ground. Never climb trees. They mainly feed on grass leaves, seeds and excavated underground stems and rhizomes, sometimes fruits and small invertebrates. The head and body length of males is 69–74 cm, of females 50–65 cm. The weight of males reaches 20 kg, females 12–16 kg. They are considered one of the most dangerous herbivores and the loudest monkeys in the world.

The Japanese macaque is the northernmost monkey that lives in various forests in the north of the island of Honshu in Japan, where snow lies before four months and the average winter temperature is -5 ° C. During this period, Japanese macaques spend most of their time in hot springs. They live in groups of 20 to 100 individuals with a strict hierarchy. Their body length reaches 79–95 cm. The weight of males is 10–14 kg, of females - 5.5 kg. Japanese macaques omnivores, they feed mainly on fruits, leaves, seeds, plant roots, fungi, as well as insects, fish, bird eggs and small vertebrates. Interestingly, this monkey, along with man and raccoon, is the only animal that washes food before eating it.

Among primates, the smallest monkeys, marmosets, stand out as a special group. They are so tiny, ranging in size from ten to fifteen centimeters with a tail that is twice as long as the body. Big eyes framed by thick hair have a meaningful look.

The marmoset lives in the forests of the Amazon, in the upper reaches of the river. The miniature monkey was first discovered in 1823 in Western Brazil, where it borders Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.

The life of a marmoset monkey in nature

The thick hair, which covers the entire body of the marmoset, turns into hairs on the muzzle. Ears are not visible in thick fur, and eyes appear more expressive in framing light circles... Small graceful rounders end with sharp claws. Only on the big toes instead of claws are flat nails. The coat has shades from black-brown to yellowish, with black and white dots.

Habitat

Igrunki are diurnal, and at night climb into the hollows of trees. All the time monkeys spend on lower tier tropical trees moving along the branches. Occasionally they jump to other trees, making jumps up to two meters. Monkeys live in small groups of two to four adults and their children. One male is the leader of the group. Children of different ages live with their parents for several years. Pregnancy in females lasts approximately 140 days. Then two or three babies are born, which become independent after five months.

Adult males and young females help in caring for babies. One day after birth, the babies "move" to the adult members of the group, returning to the mother for feeding. This division of responsibilities allows the mother to rest and recharge.

Every family of marmoset monkeys occupies a certain territory without interfering with others. The plot size can be up to one hundred acres. To protect him, the monkeys mark their territory. When other animals encroach on them, they drive them away, making threatening sounds.

Nutrition in vivo

The basis of the diet of dwarf monkeys is the sap and gum of trees growing on their territory. They are their sharp teeth punch holes in the bark of trees and lick the sap. The gum of trees is a source of calcium, which is so necessary for marmosets.

They also eat fruits, but they are not enough for the whole year, since the habitat of each family is small. Also happy to marmosets eat various insects:

To catch grasshoppers, monkeys briefly descend to the ground, risking their lives.

They have enough water to drink, which collects on the leaves of trees and accumulates in the flowers.

Marmosets spend most of the daytime on food, clinging to the tree trunk with sharp claws and licking the protruding sap.

Communication of monkeys

V free time they play fast moving from branch to branch... Monkeys express their affection by combing each other with their claws.

When communicating with each other, they make sounds similar to whistling and chirping. Among their sounds, there is one cry that is inaccessible to the human ear and expresses hostility. Twitter is used in peaceful communication between monkeys, denoting submissiveness. If a member of the family notices an alarm, they whistle with open mouth... Trills with a closed mouth sound when they communicate with each other.

Enemies of marmosets

Dwarf monkeys in nature often become prey for tree snakes and birds of prey. To protect themselves, the marmosets have developed two opposite lines of behavior: display of aggression or hiding... Depending on the size of the aggressor, the animals either advance in a group, emitting a frightening whistle and making threatening gestures. In other cases, they hide among the foliage, freezing motionless.

But the main threat to the number of marmosets is humans and their activities. Deforestation makes the monkeys look for new places to live. They are already seen among the trees on the border of agricultural fields.

In addition, a person catches marmosets for sale, since the demand for these cute funny animals has grown significantly.

When kept in zoos, marmosets do not tolerate other relatives on their territory, suffer from noise and anxiety. But when creating favorable conditions can live up to 18 years in captivity. Whereas in natural conditions do not live longer than ten years.

In their captivity the diet consists of the following foods:

  • fruits (apples, grapes, bananas);
  • vegetables ( cauliflower, peas);
  • protein products (meat, fish, eggs, rice);
  • mealworm larvae;
  • gum syrup.

Funny cute monkeys make you want to have such animals in your apartment. If conditions permit, then for them it is necessary to equip spacious terrarium. Minimum dimensions for a couple of marmosets - one and a half meters in height and a meter in length. But the more space you can set aside for their content, the better they will feel for you. Especially when the offspring appear. For animals, it is necessary to equip ladders, put trunks of strong branches for climbing. You can put artificial plants and equip places where the animals can hide and sleep at night. In general, create a small rainforest for them.

And then you can watch their jumps, games and funny antics, getting incomparable pleasure. Not recommended to release marmosets around the house because of the danger of causing injury or harm to them, as they will engage in the study of everything that surrounds them. Any possibility of escaping through windows or open doors otherwise it will be impossible to catch them on the street and they will die.

Also, you cannot take them out of the house, since noisy streets are a source of severe stress, which also negatively affects the health of the monkeys. If you need a veterinarian's consultation, then invite a doctor home.

To accustom the animals to yourself, feed them from your hand, communicate with them while feeding. But give them time to get used to their new place of residence, and then they will bring you a lot of fun minutes and pleasure from watching them.

Here are some more tips for caring for marmosets. General cleaning in the terrarium is enough to arrange once a month.

Feeding at home should include the following main products:

On the advice of your veterinarian, give vitamins, but strictly in the prescribed dosage.

If all the conditions are met, you will have funny pets at home that do not require much and complex care, but give you a lot of pleasant minutes from communicating with them.

Animal monkey - special kind mammals, which is similar in structure to humans. The animal belongs to the order of primates, to the suborder dry-bearing.

Adults can reach a height of up to 2.5 meters, the smallest monkeys do not exceed 15 centimeters. Most large view this animal is gorillas, especially males.

The weight of such a large primate varies from 250-280 kg, while very small monkeys can weigh as little as 200 grams.

Monkeys that live in trees have a special elongated back, which allows them to wrap themselves around branches, and also allows them to jump and climb trees well.

Some species of monkeys have a long tail, usually longer than the whole body, it allows you to keep balance and easily move through the bushes. Monkeys that live on land have a much shorter tail, and those primates that are similar to humans have no tail at all.

The body of the monkeys is covered with hair, their color can be from light red to black, it all depends on where the monkey lives, what species it belongs to.

Monkeys, like humans, when they reach a certain age, turn gray, they can become bald, this applies more to males.

Monkeys have rather developed limbs, especially the upper ones, they, like humans, have five fingers, only the tips of the fingers are covered with rough nails. Also, the development of limbs largely depends on how and where the monkey lives, it is believed that the most developed primates are those that live in trees.

The teeth of primates are similar to those of humans, but monkeys with a narrow nose have a different oral cavity, also in narrow-nosed and broad-nosed monkeys different amount teeth, the first 32, the second 36.

Such mammals differ developed brain, they are quite smart, especially the humanoid species is able to understand well, and also intelligently perform some actions.

They communicate with each other by special, special signals, which consist of separate sounds and facial expressions. The most noisy are monkeys, you can hear their squeak for hours.

Their facial expressions are also well developed, they can express their dissatisfaction, joy, love, they can even tease.

Where do certain primate species live?

Monkeys live all over the world in certain parts of countries and continents. Densely populated by monkeys Gibraltar, Asia, Japan, China, Africa (excluding Madagascar), in the tropics South America, Australia.

Chimpanzees can be found in the Western part of America, gorillas live in Africa, Mauritania, Guinea. Orangutans love moist forests, so they inhabit Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Howler monkey species lives in southern parts Mexico, Brazil, Argentina.

There are quite a few monkeys and gibbons in Asia and Africa. Gibbons love the climate of India, Malaysia, as well as the humid tropics in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, China.

Hamadrils inhabit all parts of Africa, but baboons live only in certain parts of it - Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia.

How and how long do monkeys live?

Some species live on trees with dense crowns, they are comfortable hiding there, as well as sheltering from rain and sun. Monkeys defend their place, so if the other tries to drive her from the chosen bush, she will respond with aggression and a strong squeak.

Monkeys living on the ground move everywhere, they usually do not occupy separate places, live in flocks on common area forests.

Primates can live up to 45 years on average.

What do primates eat?

Monkeys are a special type of animals that eat everything in a row, the diet consists of where they live, on land or on land. Monkeys living in trees feed on leaves, fruits, buds, nuts, and also eat large insects.

Primates leading a terrestrial lifestyle use plant roots, shoots, they especially love fern leaves. Apart from fruits, special species eat fish, mice, lizards, they also like to feast on beetles, grasshoppers.

Types and photos of monkeys

The black howler is a monkey from the arachnid family. The primate received this name because of its roaring sounds, which are heard 6 km away.

The males of such monkeys are black in color, the female, on the contrary, is light brown. Howler monkeys live in Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina.

The funeral capuchin is a special species of primates representing the chain-tailed family. The weight of such a monkey varies from 3 to 4 kg.

The fur of the animal is light brown in color, on the head is a black crest of a triangular shape. Such primates feed on insects, tree shoots. They live in Brazil, Suriname.

White-handed gibbon - this type of monkey is similar to humans. Adults reach a height of 65 cm and weigh up to 5 kg. The color of such primates is brown, sandy, sometimes even light beige.

Such monkeys feed on insects, leaves, fruits. The species is found in China.

There are a lot of monkey breeds, they all live in different corners planets. The animal gets along well with people, lends itself to training, specially trained monkeys help people with disabilities move around.

Photo monkeys

Thin lori. It is a furry animal the size of a squirrel. Laurie is a semi-monkey. Despite its unusual appearance, he is our relative. Lori is farther from us than monkeys, but nevertheless closer than other mammals.
Pay attention to his paws - he has not claws, but nails, like all monkeys. This is one of the characteristics characteristic of primates: semi-monkeys, monkeys and humans. Lori live in trees in the forests of India and on the island of Ceylon, lead night image life - it's not for nothing that they have such huge eyes.

Tarsier Filipino. As a joke, we can say that this is already a "three-quarters" of the monkey. Fluffy, brightly colored, with huge eyes and long tail, this tarsier is very similar to a fabulous creature. The size of an animal is about a rat, and in its habits from a distance it resembles a frog, especially when it jumps, hunting for insects. He also has marigolds on his fingers, but with inside- soft pads with suction cups that help him to hold on to branches more tightly. During the day, the tarsier sleeps, clinging to a vine or branch. The tail, wrapped around the trunk, serves as a brake and does not allow slipping down.

Lion marmoset, or rosalia. This little monkey lives in the rainforests of South America. Igrunks easily and quickly, like squirrels, climb trees, firmly clinging to the bark with small, narrow and sharp marigolds. But on the big toes they have wide nails.
Igrunks are the most primitive of monkeys and are very difficult to tame. Of all the marmoset monkeys, the rosalia are especially noisy. They have very beautiful fur with a metallic sheen.

White-chinned capuchin- also an American monkey, one of the smartest among them, not even inferior to chimpanzees. Capuchins know how to drink milk from a cup, break nuts with a hammer, and so dexterously that they do not fall on the fingers. They watch movies with interest, and when they see a snake on the screen, they scatter in horror.
Capuchins are easily tamed, and wandering magicians deftly used the quick wits of these monkeys. The Capuchin can bypass the audience with a hat in his hand, bow to those who give big money, and to those who give nothing, skillfully express their contempt.

Monkey brazovskaya can be called the king of the lower monkeys. No wonder she has, as it were, three multi-colored crowns on her head! These monkeys live in the impenetrable jungle of Kenya. Moving through the trees, they make bold jumps, but they also feel confident on the ground: they run fast like dogs. This large, brightly colored monkey is very neat, its fur is always carefully combed and cleaned.

Smoky thin body, or bespectacled monkey. Lives in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. it big monkeys length - from the tip of the muzzle to the root of the tail - up to seventy-three centimeters. The body is covered with thick gray hair. On the head, the hair forms a semblance of a crown. These monkeys are rather vicious, live in herds, feed mainly on leaves.
Together with macaques and baboons, they belong to the lower, narrow-nosed, or monkey-like, monkeys.

Common nipple lives only on the island of Borneo. These are very calm big monkeys. They are excellent swimmers, able to swim across bays and straits. They know how to overcome relatively long distances on two legs.
In a male nose, his amazing nose sometimes reaches such a size in old age that it interferes with his eating, and he has to move his nose with his hand to the side.

Silver gibbon refers to great apes. Like other gibbons, the silver gibbon has no tail. He walks and even runs on his feet, balancing with his arms outstretched wide. These friendly, affable monkeys are very quick-witted. In Indonesia, gibbons are very fond of, they tame them and treat them like family members.

Orangutan- huge great ape... The body is covered with reddish-red hair, in some orangutans it is more brownish. The legs are relatively short and weak, but the shoulders and chest are wide, the head is huge, the arms are long and strong. Males weigh up to two hundred and fifty kilograms. Orangutans live in trees, at a height of two to three tens of meters. With the help of their dexterous hands, they can move along the branches. They move through trees as fast as a person runs on the ground. On the ground, they almost never walk upright. No predator attacks these large monkeys, endowed with mighty strength and terrible fangs.
Orangutans live in hard-to-reach swampy forests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, feed on plants, especially love hard fruits tropical tree durian.

Chimpanzee thinner and more mobile than an orangutan, less than it, weighs forty to fifty kilograms. The body is covered with rather sparse hair. Chimpanzees spend most of their time on the ground. They are more closely related to humans than orangutans. Chimpanzee facial expressions are very diverse and in many ways resemble humans.
Scientists know something like a primitive "language," a set of sounds used by chimpanzees. These great apes are distinguished by their high ingenuity, they know how to find a way out of rather difficult situations... One day the chimpanzee began to independently remove the screws from the door with a screwdriver and screw them into a broken stool. When that wasn't enough, the chimpanzee started hammering nails into the stool and eventually repaired it. After that, the monkey dropped the hammer and sat down on a stool.

Scientists know a lot about modern great apes - chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan and gibbon... In these monkeys, the same diseases are found as in humans, even appendicitis. And they are treated not so much by veterinarians as by doctors.
Chimpanzees and gorillas are most related to humans; we had common ancestors with them - fossil apes. They lived a long time ago, millions of years ago. Since then, the human lineage and the line of development of the apes have diverged. Therefore, we cannot be considered our ancestors of modern gorillas and chimpanzees, and even more so orangutan and gibbon.
The closest relatives of the first people were fossils of very highly developed bipedal monkeys. Scientists can judge the structure of their bodies only by the skulls, teeth and other bone remains of these monkeys, which can be found during excavations.

Based on the book "The Kingdom of the Apes" by Ivan Sanderson and Georg Steinbacher.

The social structure is characterized by 4 levels of organization. The largest level of organization is the herd, which is a gathering of animals on sleeping rocks. The number of individuals in a herd can vary from 300 to 1000 animals. In the daytime, the herds are divided into "bands" and clans, in turn consisting of one-male units or harems. Hamadryas baboons are characterized by patrilocality and pronounced hierarchical relationships. Up to 40 sound signals are used for communication, as well as expressive looks, facial grimaces and gestures.
