Surfing in Vietnam is very popular; many resort areas host international competitions. From October to the end of April, not only beginners, but also experienced surfers come to the country.

Water sports in Vietnam

Vietnam– a country with luxurious nature, wonderful beaches and unusual traditions. Here you can learn the skill of conquering waves, which is facilitated by the shallow depth, sandy bottom and the absence of pitfalls.

Surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddle boarding

Sea sports are actively gaining popularity. Here are the most famous of them:

  • Surfing– a sport the essence of which is riding waves using a special board;
  • SUP surfing- so-called paddle surfing. In this case, rigid or inflatable boards can be used. The main disadvantage of inflatable boards is their low speed. There is a safety cord at the stern that ensures safety on the water;
  • Windsurfing– consists of gliding through the water on a light board with a sail. The surfer holds the sail by a special crossbar, which is called a boom.;
  • The board and windsurfing sail are connected using a special mast.

  • Kitesefing— riding on waves where a kite is needed. This sport can involve a variety of water tricks, including jumping and flips.

Season to practice

According to many athletes, Vietnam is one of the best countries for surfing. Resorts such as Nha Trang, Vung Tau, and Phan Thiet are excellent for training and education. In the village of Mui Ne there are surf clubs equipped with everything necessary. The best time to come to Phan Thiet and Vung Tau is from the beginning of March.

Best time for surfing in Nha Trang - from September to January. Hurricanes and typhoons are rare here. The most unpredictable months in terms of weather are December, but the cost of tours during this period decreases.

Schools and camps

Surfing is the undisputed leader among aquatic species sports There are numerous schools on the coast, where experienced instructors teach.

In all surfing centers in Vietnam you can also rent the necessary equipment.

Vietnamese surf resorts

The country has a sufficient number of resorts for training and professional wave riding.

Mui Ne

The waves in Mui Ne come during the windy season, from about November to March. Optimal time for surfing: early morning. IN high season Caters and surfers from all over the planet come to the village. Learning to surf in Mui Ne is a great chance to make new acquaintances.

Even though there is no ocean here, the chance of catching a good wave is quite high.

The sandy bottom, the absence of pitfalls and sharp corals ensure safe skiing. Perfect for your first steps in the world of surfing East End bay— since the coast is covered by a cape, the waves here are small. More Russian-language surfing schools are concentrated in Mui Ne.

Vung Tau

The waves in Vung Tau are constant. Usually those who have at least some surfing skills come here. For beginners, such waves may seem too aggressive. The best time to visit Vung Tau is from December to. True, tourists may be in for an unpleasant surprise in January -
Since typhoons often occur this month, for safety reasons the beaches are closed to the public.

There are always small waves in Vung Tau, even on calm days, which explains underwater currents. The weather in this area is very changeable. There are many surf schools in this resort area; due to high competition, prices for training are very reasonable. Finding accommodation in Vung Tau will also not be a problem; many hotels are located near the beach.

Nha Trang

Nha Trang is a resort with developed infrastructure and a large flow of tourists. The beaches are quite a lot of vacationers, that’s why most surfers prefer to go out of town. In Nha Trang itself, athletes can be found on the city beach “Vietnamese”. In autumn and spring, the waves are quite large, so beginners are advised to visit the resort in summer.

There is a beach 30 km from Nha Trang Bai Dai, there are few vacationers here, so this place is great for kitesurfing. In winter, professionals from all over the world often come here.

Danang

In Da Nang they often hold competitions on surfing. The largest waves are observed in winter, while the sea is calmer in summer. There are many hotels and guest houses in this resort area different levels comfort.

At this time, stable waves are observed on the island, and no heavy rains. There are rarely big waves on the coast of Fukuoka, so the resort is often chosen by beginners in the world of surfing.

It must be remembered that surfing is an extreme and traumatic sport, so do not neglect health insurance. In addition, you should pay close attention to your well-being - if you have dizziness, fever, or general weakness, exercise is contraindicated. Here a few rules that will be useful for beginners:

  • Surfing and alcohol incompatible;
  • Important correctly assess your strengths. Those who are not yet confident on the board are recommended to choose small waves;

Look in this video How to surf in Vietnam:

It just so happens that the word surfing, for 90% of people involved in active sports, evokes the main association - Bali. That is, if you want to go surfing or study at a surf school, go to Bali. And it's really true, Bali is a very cool place to surf, only in summer time year - from April to August, when the rainy season is less pronounced and weather and wave conditions are optimal.

But what to do and where to go for surfing in our winter, when you want to bask in the sun, ride excellent, but at the same time, not too angry waves and, moreover, not waste your 5-year travel budget? We found the answer for ourselves - this is Vietnam, and to be more specific, the village of Mui Ne, which gained its fame thanks to kite surfers and the cheapness of living here.

Let's be honest, if kitesurfing is for beginners in Mui Ne, it's not for everyone... that is. if you really, really want to learn and are ready not to stop in the face of all the difficulties that await you here in terms of kite (deep water, big wave, strong wind, i.e. everything that is good for professionals, but bad for beginners), then this is just right for surfing in Mui Ne ideal conditions for newbies.

You can take your first steps in surfing not even from deep water, but simply by going chest-deep into the water, lying down on the board and, together with our instructor, starting to catch your first waves. You don’t have to row a kilometer from the shore, and then, too tired, try to catch adult waves.

Surfing in Mui Ne is simply created for beginners and it’s very cool that there are not so many surfers here yet (although there are already enough) and there are quite a lot of surf spots (places for riding) that are maximally suitable for surf training - surf, go ashore, refresh yourself in a cafe fresh coconut and salad and back into the water for new waves and emotions!

Surfing lessons at our school take place mainly at two surf spots - Malibu beach and Breakwater.

Malibu Beach is located a little away from the center of Mui Ne, which has the advantage of a wide beach line, the absence of a large number of tourists and traffic from athletes and students on the water. Here you don’t need to look around again and think only about how not to crash into another student, as often happens at other spots.

We also teach at the Breakwater spot, where the best recreational beach in Mui Ne is located. In addition, the Volnorez spot is located almost in the center of the tourist village, which may be more convenient for travelers living here.

Both surfing spots can “work” differently, so the decision on where is better to practice is current time, we accept directly depending on surfing conditions. Where they are better is where we go.

The difference between surfing and kitesurfing is that you don’t need wind, but you do need waves. From lunch, a steady wind blows, with which you can take out your kites and go to study or ride in the warm and pleasant water. Yes, and in general, you can always decide what to do with yourself every day - for example, a day of surfing, then a day of kiting, then maybe volleyball, gym, tennis, etc. Well, or combine everything in one day, if you are a Terminator :-).

Simply put - there is no wind - we surf, there is wind - we ride a kite. Of course, there are days when there is no wind or waves, but they are very rare.

Cost of learning to surf at a school in Mui Ne

Surfing lessons, individual (3.5 hours, 2 days) - $100

Surfing lessons, group (1 hour) - $35

Surfing lessons, individual (1 hour) - $50

Weekly surfing course (1.5 hours a day, 7 days) - $300

Beginners are taught on softtop boards - ideal surfboards for learning the first steps in kiting. The very top of the board is covered with soft material, which makes standing on it more pleasant, will not hurt your knees, and in case of a “knead” in a wave, may soften the impact of the board on your body. Everything is included in the cost of training necessary equipment, as well as transfer to the place of study.

We also provide services for delivering students to surf spots on our bikes, or the “Instructor on Call” service :-))) which involves the arrival of a surf instructor at your hotel and teaching surfing right on the beach of your hotel, provided that it is located in a place suitable for surfing.

The cost of renting boards at the WindExtreme surf school

The cost of renting surfboards is included in the cost of learning to surf. The prices below apply to independent surfers who want to rent equipment, without lessons.
1 hour - 7 $
1 day - 20 $
1 week - 100 $
1 month - 200 $

What to take with you to learn to surf

For clothes, you will need lycra, preferably with long sleeve and shorts / Perhaps, if you are cold, a short wetsuit will be useful (all this can be bought or rented directly from us).

This clothing is needed both for protection from the sun and, out of habit, to avoid rubbing abrasions on the surf.

The face and open parts of the body must be smeared sunscreen, the higher the degree of protection of the cream, the better, because on the water we tan twice as intensely, because Sun rays They come not only from above, but are also reflected back at us from the water.

To Malibu sandy beaches, on the shore and water there will be light, soft sand waiting for you, there are no stones or sharp shells, so you won’t need uncomfortable water shoes.

All other equipment is provided by our surf school in Vietnam

Description of the surfing course at the WindExtreme school in Vietnam

So, we changed clothes, lubricated ourselves, and met the instructor. After this, they will briefly tell you the basic theory: the rules of behavior on the water, how to behave with a surfboard, what waves are, how they are formed and what we need them for.

In our surfing school, special attention is paid to safety. You will be required to know what reverse and side currents are, how to behave so that they do not interfere with us, but, on the contrary, help us when learning and surfing.

On the shore, we will practice body position on the board, when and how to row, how to get up, accelerate, brake, turn, etc.

Particular attention will be paid to practicing the correct stance, lifting/standing on a surfboard on the shore, where this is much easier to do than in difficult conditions, right away, on the water. You will learn how to control your body, how to properly stand on a surfboard and how to control your body balance.

In surfing, a lot of attention is paid to balance; it will be necessary at all stages of learning. If you have been involved in snowboarding, skateboarding, skiing, kiteboarding, or indeed, probably any active look sports, of course, this will be a good bonus and it will be easier for you. However, you won’t be able to just get up and go straight away; you will have to learn in stages, moving from one exercise to another. There are not very many such exercises in surfing, but they exist.

After all these theoretical and practical exercises on land, we do some warm-up exercises, thereby eliminating the risk of getting injured or sprained during active exercise on the water.

Well, here comes the most interesting and difficult stage of learning to surf - you fasten the board to your leg, take it under your armpit and, together with the instructor, go into the water to catch your first waves.

We go out on the water, etc. The student cannot yet adequately assess which waves are suitable for travel and which are not, the instructor helps to navigate and chooses good waves himself.

When the wave begins to approach the surfer, the instructor commands the start of raking :-) But at the same time, because... beginners do not row very well and do not always understand how to do it, the instructor stabilizes the board in the water and gives the initial push to accelerate and get up on the surf comfortably

When the board has accelerated enough, we remember all the exercises that we did on the shore and begin to stand on the board

All that’s left is to get into the right position and balance on the board.

And voila! Congratulations, you have taken your first wave, now you are definitely unstoppable!

This is what it looks like, step by step, for a beginner to successfully ride his first wave.

If you want to sign up for courses or hourly lessons at our surf school, we ask you to fill out this form - and we will contact you by e-mail or the specified messenger (whatsapp/viber/telegram) and clarify all the details.

Surfing in Vietnam is not quite what you are used to seeing on TV, where brave, tanned, long-haired guys and girls conquer giant waves. Not in Vietnam huge waves, which only masters can conquer, and beginners or simply those who like to swim in the sea have nothing to do. Here nature has created unique conditions for the Vietnam surfing season, steps in mastering surfing. Here you don’t need to be a muscular and pumped up “Baywatch” who can break through the impenetrable surf. Every vacationer, of any build and physical fitness, can learn to surf and bring home vivid impressions and excellent photo reports of how he conquered the Vietnamese wave. Here in Vietnam, after spending just a couple of hours learning to surf, you can surf on your own. You don't have to row with your hands for several hours, lying on the board, to get out beyond the surf. Completely calm, waist-deep in warm sea water, you just need to move a little away from the shore, choose a suitable wave, stand on it and ride along the beach, enjoying the feeling of unity with the ocean and victory over the elements. Here and only here, in Vietnam, there is a unique beach with a shallow bottom and a low, “long” wave (and this, believe me, is the most important thing), where you can master surfing easily and naturally, as if this is what you’ve been doing all your life.
For comparison, in the famous Hawaii, mastering surfing would take you up to two weeks, not to mention the fact that it would cost you serious physical effort and money.
There are several surf stations on the coast where they provide training and rent out equipment. The largest Russian station - AFRICA Surf&Kite Test Center, has existed since the beginning of 2005, located on the beach of the Swiss Village hotel.
Surfing in Vietnam
Moreover, in favor of the Vietnamese active rest The relative cheapness of vacations also stands out. Moreover, the indicator consists of many arguments, this and:
- cheap and comfortable hotel accommodation. located close to surf and kite schools
- diverse schools and bases focused on professionalism and purity of training. where you can not only learn various types water sports, but it is also relatively cheap to rent all the necessary equipment. but mostly training is conducted by English-speaking instructors; there are very few Russian-speaking specialists.
- favorable conditions for kitesurfing and classic surfing
Of course, in order to save even more, it is better not to change your board and take it with you.
In general, always take your own at least minimal equipment. Thus, a unique opportunity to save money appears and you will not depend on unclear conditions dictated by sluggish events. Why do you need a good board” if all the pleasure you get from conquering the next wave largely depends on the quality of the equipment used! Those for whom surfing has become an integral part of life will understand me perfectly.
BUT! Surfing in Vietnam favors several, perhaps, the best surf schools where you can rent custom Jimmy Lewisa lungboards! By the way, you can not only try them out, but also purchase them for personal use. At many stations you can buy not only used equipment, but also completely new boards. Such a purchase, as a rule, costs a pretty penny, but for some it is a unique opportunity that they clearly do not want to miss.
Now let's add some specifics.
Surfing in Vietnam
For inexperienced lovers, Vung Tau is ideal. where even with almost zero wind you can always find a modest wave created by underwater currents. The most ideal option is, of course, Mui Ne. located in the south of Vietnam, where the most ideal conditions are created in January:

- Vietnam surfing season - beautiful waves driven by a light breeze!
- air temperature +29"-C/+32"-C

In the ancient town of Hoi An, you will spend hours wandering through the bustling streets between numerous souvenir shops, countless cafes and restaurants, between sewing and shoe workshops, where they will sew anything for you to order. Next to Hoi An is the typical port city of Da Nang. famous all over the world for its magnificent beaches.
To escape the buzz of millions of motorbikes in Vietnam's big cities, you can head west to the wet green rice paddies and quiet villages of the Mekong Delta. For a relaxing getaway on the white sands of warm beaches, head to Phu Quoc Island. To get and snow-white beaches and a lot of active entertainment, visit Nha Trang. Vietnam weather, tourist seasons
Holidays in Vietnam are possible at any time of the year. There is always a warm and sunny corner with excellent weather here, you just need to choose the right place and time.
In Vietnam, like in most countries of Southeast Asia, there are only two seasons a year - the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season in Vietnam is not at all like what is shown in American films - when it rains like buckets and does not stop for weeks. It rains heavily here, but it only lasts 20 minutes, and an hour later the sun is already shining and not a trace remains of the previous downpour. Most often, even at the peak of the rainy season, it rains in the evening or at night.
The season for falling prices throughout Vietnam is from May to September. During this period, it is best to plan a trip for those who want to see the country and save a little money. It is at this time that hotels and guesthouses offer discounts on accommodation in their rooms (sometimes reaching up to 30%), special offers from airlines appear, and there are few tourists. The weather does not present any special surprises during this period, with the exception of the central part of Vietnam (Hoi An, Danang, Nha Trang), where hurricanes are possible on the coast in September-November.
In the south of Vietnam (Saigon, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet) - the main tourist center of the country, the rainy season lasts from May to November, however, inconvenience at this time is caused not by rain, of which there is not much here, but by strong winds, waves and sometimes cloudy skies , does not allow sunlight to pass through. The ideal time to visit this area is considered to be the dry season - from December to April.
On the central coast (Hoi An. Da Nang), on the contrary, from May to October it is dry and sunny, high humidity starts only in November. You can also relax here throughout the year, however, as mentioned above, there is a possibility of hurricanes in September-November. In December-February there is a very choppy ocean here and swimming will be quite difficult at this time.
In the north of Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long, Sapa), the attractive season for tourists lasts from May to October. And from November to April it can be quite cold here - from +10 at night to +20 during the day, but hotel prices also drop.
In the mountainous areas of Dalat (1500 m), Buon, Phuot and Sapa, nights are quite cool throughout the year, and in winter from October to March the temperature drops to +4C. Even in the hottest months - March and April, the temperature rarely exceeds +26C.
Seasons at Vietnamese resorts*

If you decide to learn to surf or just want to ride a board in comfort, then you may like the beaches of Vietnam. This is especially true for those who want to go kiting. After all, surfing holidays in Vietnam are natural features aimed primarily at board skating kite. However, on Vietnamese beaches there is a place for both classic surfing and windsurfing, mainly of the first level of difficulty. But you can also find big wave. Beginners can take advantage of equipment rental and the services of schools, some of which have Russian-speaking trainers on their staff.

The most popular surfing spot in Vietnam, especially among Russian tourists, is the Mui Ne area. We will begin with its description.

Mui Ne

What was not so long ago a simple village inhabited by fishermen and their families, Mui Ne has in the last 2-3 decades become an active tourism destination, located just under 15 km from the large city of Phan Thiet. This resort, which has become the surfing capital of Vietnam, is a favorite of kite fans from Russia. This explains the large number of Russian-language kite training schools, as well as the appearance of coaches from Russia in schools with international coaching staff. The total number of schools and equipment rentals exceeds 2 dozen. There are also shops here where you can buy all the equipment. Prices at stations vary; the services of Russian-speaking trainers are often more expensive. But if you decide to take up this type of water sport for the first time and are not fluent in English language, then you should not save, since any type of surfing has its own subtleties, which the coach will tell you about. Mui Ne is also suitable for windsurfers.

The best time of year in Mui Ne for classic surfing is approximately from September to early April. Kite and windsurfing can be practiced all year round, as these places are characterized by more or less constant wind.

Another advantage of Mui Ne is its excellent beach. This is especially true if you are traveling with one of your friends and family who is not a surfer. But at the same time, apart from a beach holiday and a few excursions, there is not much to do here. Another disadvantage is that the trip along a poor-quality road from the nearest airport, located in Ho Chi Minh City, is not the fastest.

Vung Tau

Vung Tau is a medium-sized, fairly developed city located in the southern part of Vietnam. Unlike Mui Ne, the beach here is more modest, but its occupancy is low. The waves are more constant, but at the same time they may seem aggressive to some. There are also Russian-speaking surfing clubs in Vung Tau ( we're talking about about different types of surfing, but mainly about kiting) schools or independent trainers.

For kiters and windsurfers, the summer period is not the best time to relax. So, in May the wind direction changes from winter to summer. And in principle, the wind here is not as constant as in Mui Ne: sometimes strong, sometimes very weak. The best time for kiting and windsurfing is from December to March. It should be taken into account that almost the entire month of January the sea may be closed due to strong gusts of wind. In general, the disadvantage of Vung Tau is its location on the cape, which makes the beach and the city susceptible to typhoons and other natural disasters.

The advantage of Vung Tau, not directly related to boarding, is the urban infrastructure with an abundance of entertainment venues. By the way, the hallmark is the greyhound racing, held at the stadium every Saturday.

Danang

Da Nang is located in northern central Vietnam. In the early 90s, a surfing tournament was even held here. But this did not make Da Nang a particularly popular destination for different types surfing. Although the beaches of Da Nang itself, or those closest to it, have all the conditions for classic surfing. It all depends on the time of year. During the winter months (November to January) there are better waves for experienced surfers. In the summer, beginners can learn in calmer seas.

But the most better place for surfing, this is not the beach of Da Nang itself, but the My Khe beach located a 10-minute walk from it: the waves here sometimes reach 6 feet and remind some of Indonesia.

There is also something to see in the city itself. But be careful: when walking around the area, do not veer off the beaten path, as you may stumble upon the consequences of war - ammunition.

Nha Trang

You can meet surfers on the city beach of Nha Trang, but this is still a more popular place among amateurs have a relaxing holiday. A large number of This makes kite riding problematic for vacationers. Therefore, there are only 2 kite rental stations on this Vietnamese beach.

Close to Nha Trang, off Hon Do Island there is an area with reefs and swirling waves.

But the most popular place among surfers is located 30 km south of Nha Trang. This is the beach Bai Dai. In winter there are excellent waves and wind conditions for experienced surfers, in summer – beginners can learn and gain experience on small waves.

In general, wind conditions in Nha Trang often coincide with Mui Ne.

A little about prices

Prices for both equipment rental and trainer services at any of the Vietnamese resorts may vary depending on the season. average cost An hourly rental of a complete set of kiting equipment is $70, of which rental of the kite and board itself costs $30 and $20, respectively. To rent a classic surfboard you will need to pay about $20. Hourly instructor fees can range from $40 to $70. The entire training course lasts about 5 hours.

As a conclusion, I would like to say that there is no clear opinion regarding surfing in Vietnam. Most are inclined to believe that if we consider the beaches of Vietnam as surfing areas, then they are mainly for kiting, and in winter it is more difficult with classic surfing. Here, the factor of luck on weather conditions is more likely to work.

Vietnamese cuisine

The cuisine of Vietnam has been greatly influenced by its geographical location and colonial past, as a result of which the cuisine of this country has absorbed the culinary traditions of French, Thai, Chinese, and Indian cooking. At the same time, Vietnamese cuisine has retained its originality: it is not customary for the Vietnamese to subject dishes to significant heat treatment, and food is mainly with a small amount of fat (which makes it quite nutritious and healthy).
