Camouflage from the French camouflage is one of the types of protection for personnel, equipment and weapons used to make it difficult for the enemy to recognize various objects visually and with the help of optoelectronic or photographic reconnaissance equipment. Camouflage is a multi-color, most often 2-4-color large- or small-spotted color, distorting the contours of the object due to the merging of the color and shape of individual spots.

In 2014, the combat equipment of the Russian army team was replenished with a new accessory. An item with a complex foreign name, a travel bag, entered the army standard along with new equipment. The modern Russian army has a complex hierarchical structure based on the subordination of the lower levels to the higher ones. Unconditional obedience within the limits of the military regulations is determined by law, and violation of the order is punishable by a military court. The armed forces for any state are the guarantor of its security and inviolability of territorial borders. In Russia, the army organizes its activities on the basis of certain normative documents, these are Federal Laws, Government Resolutions, Presidential Decrees, as well as local resolutions of executive authorities in the regions. Thanks to a unified legal system, it is possible to effectively manage a multi-thousand contingent, distributing common tasks and promptly resolving security issues.

The army is perhaps the most numerous institution that is considered to be regularly functioning. If all those liable for military service, including those who are in the reserve, are added to the contingent currently in service, then more than half of all Russian citizens will be covered. Naturally, such a size of the armed forces will be achieved only as a last resort, when military aggression from another state is inevitable, but even the existing military personnel, of whom there are hundreds of thousands, must be centrally

Traditional disclaimer. This article by no means claims to be complete and the ultimate truth. The topic of Russian equipment in the nineties is huge and complex, and my modest work is just a superficial educational program, an introduction to the topic. The USSR approached its collapse with very primitive equipment, which looked wretched even against the backdrop of the then unpretentious equipment of the NATO armies. However, in the nineties, despite the severe economic crisis and lack of money, progress in the field of military equipment,

Each type and type of troops has its own attributes. In addition to the battle banner and chevrons, the concept of distinctive signs includes shoulder straps. Today we will try to understand the colors and lettering on the shoulder straps of military personnel and cadets of the Russian army, as well as law enforcement agencies. Shoulder straps

Unfortunately, the arms race to create a camouflage pattern that would work was doomed to failure. In 2012, The Daily called it "5 billion snafu" (SNAFU is an acronym that can literally be translated as "the situation is under control: everything is flying to ..."). As part of the above race, which was officially called Army's Camouflage Improvement Effort, camouflage designs from hundreds of designers were requested, from which four finalists were selected. Four years (and millions of dollars) later, the Army seems to have a winner.

Four final camouflages have been createdBrookwood,Cryeprecision,Kryptek andADSInc. WithguyCramer

The delays didn't stop there. By latest rumors decided to cancel the entire camouflage masquerade. However, the Army simply accepted MultiCam, a digital camouflage made by Crye Precision, as a temporary option, acknowledging that universal camouflage does not work well.

For a long time a fairy tale affects but not soon the deed is done. In December, Congress introduced a bill that would have blocked the entire army if it did not accept a new camouflage project. By 2018, the same bill would block the entire Ministry of Defense. Politicians seem tired of wasting money on endless problems. Press Secretary William Laer, in response to questions about what was happening, could only say that "the army is weighing different options and taking into account legislative restrictions."

Among the accusations of incompetence and bureaucratic red tape, there was also the fact that military technology is developing extremely quickly, and no one can predict for sure what kind of camouflage will be needed tomorrow. The growing field of military science, despite all the dust in our eyes, is still very young. And the billions of dollars thrown to the wind do not bring the expected effect.

History of invisibility

Modern camouflage has a relatively short history. When modern warfare appeared (18th century), that is, when the long-range rifle appeared, dark green or gray camouflages came into fashion. By the beginning of the First World War, full-length troops were experimenting with "dazzle", that is, to make it difficult to catch the target, then the ship, at a distance. Soon the technique was being used by people with might and main.

Soldier of the First World War, 1917

At the dawn of World War II, distinctive modern camouflages with kidney-shaped spots appeared, and very quickly spread around the world. By the end of the war, artists were even experimenting with optical models that could fool the eye, borrowing ideas from cubism and op art.

In the late 1970s, the US Army introduced a new and unpopular pattern called "double texture" that started the "digital" camouflage pattern of today. Dual-tex used perfect colored squares to imitate two patterns at once: one large and one large, effective at different distances.

World War II soldier

By 1990, the development of patterns on the computer began, and with it the revival of scientific research. American officer Timothy O'Neill, the "grandfather of modern camouflage," designed small colored squares on camouflage that could fool the eye looking at a soldier or truck by blending them into the background scene.

Why do pixels work better than traditional bubbles? Because pixels are better at mimicking the fractal patterns that our eyes interpret as white noise. If you look at such a "digital" camouflage, your eyes simply have nothing to fix on.

Dual-tex camouflage

However, the eye is a complex anatomical object, and it is simply impossible to recreate one optical trick for millions of soldiers in an infinite number of conditions. As a result, a cottage industry of independent contractors and engineers has grown, with each one submitting their own unique camouflage variant, including the four finalists of the competition.

Find people in the photo below.

Some of these companies declined to comment when Gizmodo indicated a desire to speak with them, most likely because the announcement of the winner is not yet soon. However, Guy Kramer, CEO of Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp, designer of camouflage patterns for the armies in Jordan and Afghanistan, and one of the four finalists in the competition, was kind enough to answer some questions.

Exploiting Impaired Vision

As Kramer explained, digital camouflages attempt to use advanced optical tricks to confuse the brain and release the body from the target, instead of simply blending it into the surrounding landscape. "You can't just splash paint on a wall and call it camouflage," he says. “We are not trying to create randomness. We want the brain to interpret the pattern as part of the background."

This kind of visual trickery is a difficult task. It includes ideas about the science of color, the anatomy of the human eye, and even the logistics of creating a pattern. And she's still not perfect. Let's take a look at the most interesting failure american army: UCP.

Actually,UCP

All digital camouflages consist of two layers: micropatterns (pixels) and macropatterns (pixel merging shapes). If the scales of the macro patterns are too small - as happened with the UCP - an optical phenomenon called isoluminescence will occur, painting a carefully constructed camouflage pattern into a mass of bright color. In other words, at a distance such a suit can be seen with ease. As you can see, this has become one of the biggest problems with UCP.

What about color? In 2004, when the US Army introduced the UCP, it turned out that there was not a drop of black in the entire pattern. The fact is that black does not occur in nature - as explained official representatives. But Kramer completely disagrees. Black and brown are needed to simulate the shadow. Cramer's final painting for the competition included a "luminosity border", a thin black line along macro and micro patterns that tricks the eye into hiding shapes.

"If you don't have at least a percent of that in camo, it will look flat because there is no depth effect," Cramer explained. “That was a good lesson.”

economies of scale

There are now more than half a million soldiers in the US Army, and printing and sewing uniforms for each of them is a challenge in itself. It is also important that the camouflage "breaks" the contour of the soldier's body in places like the wrists, knees and ankle joints.

Like the tiger's stripes running perpendicular to their limbs, these visual "tears" help obscure the human target's anatomy. When a roll of camouflage fabric is cut into millions of uniforms, it can be difficult to predict exactly where those splits will end up.

Isolation example

In addition, our brain is very good at recognizing patterns - if we see the same shape twice, we immediately understand that something has happened. It is extremely important that the left and right parts of a single picture do not coincide. “A lot of patterns have this problem,” Kramer says. “The brain will see an anomaly on the right side of the chest, and if it sees a very similar pattern on the left side of the chest, it will immediately connect the dots and say, now I see the upper part of the human body.”

The same brightness limit

Kramer's success was partly due to his ability to create patterns that fit all of these complex criteria. He is a pioneer in algorithmic camouflage design. Instead of relying on his own brain to design patterns, he wrote a program that generates actual geometric fractals. Fractals are mathematical patterns that repeat at any scale.

That's why Kramer patterns have been used in everything from rifles to helicopters (not to mention 2.5 million uniforms). Since they scale, they are able to hide both a person and an entire building.

All kinds of tests

The art of testing these patterns is almost always more important than the design itself, a process Cramer knows well, having spent a decade helping the army test patterns. Including confusing the best snipers of the army with thousands of photographs.

At the US Military Academy at West Point, test subjects, including top snipers with perfect and even better eyesight, went through slide after slide of camouflaged soldiers in different environments. Huge number of images. From deserts to swamps, any weather conditions, any distance to the target (the pattern should be equally good). Statistics showed that there were 900 subjects, 45 environments, and 120,000 data points.

An important part of the testing process was not only the speed of determining the visual anomaly, but also the speed of determining the place where the soldier actually lay down. Milliseconds to make decisions can make a difference, given that it takes the average sniper 12 to 30 seconds to identify a target.

Step-arsh

At the end of August, a team of American special forces was suddenly sent from Libya. The fact is that a group of terrorists stole dozens of weapons and devices from trucks. How will this affect camouflage? Max.

Along with machine guns and lasers, the raiders stole a device that could eventually cause as much damage as the first two types of devices: special night vision goggles that detect shortwave infrared light - in the SWIR spectrum. Costing $45,000 each, these goggles allow soldiers to see down to the 1 micron wavelength, where colors blend into a white mass. In other words, it renders camouflage completely useless. The only pair was safely kept in the hands of the American army. No more.

"Now the bad guys are running with the same technology," Cramer explains.

Related questions arose: as the enemies changed supply chains military equipment, the US Army can't be sure that those guys are seeing exactly what the US Army wants to see.

We have come a long way from the rock gray or field camouflage of the 19th century. We even managed to move away from the colors of the 60s and 70s, when one pattern could solve many conflicts in ten years. Modern weapons change extremely quickly, and even when the Ministry of Defense takes one model into consideration, there is no guarantee that a new one will not appear next year.

However, many interesting concepts are under development, including those using metamaterials, which we wrote about a lot. Here, for example, is a project from Hyperstealth called Quantum Stealth, which we may talk about later.

And there is another project, which, unfortunately, its creators cannot discuss.

Camouflage is disguise. Camouflage allows you to hide an object or person in natural conditions due to a visual change in color and shape. That is why, from materials that imitate the color of natural objects, they tend to make clothes for the military, as well as for hunters.

A camouflage camouflage effect is achieved due to the fact that with properly selected colors and patterns, an object with clearly defined contours is broken down into a chaotic cluster of spots, some of which will be of a natural color for the area, and the other will simply be lost among the general background.

A properly selected camouflage shade is one that matches the shades that prevail in a particular area. That is, each of the colors of spotted camouflage used must correspond to the prevailing colors of the territory where it will be used (taking into account their seasonal changes) - then it will be possible to achieve the desired effect, and a person or object will not be visible.

Using the wisdom of nature

Observing the behavior of animals, how they appear and disappear as if from nowhere, a person realized that the best option for passive protection is the right choice of clothing and its colors. Thus, the development of special camouflage for military purposes and hunting was begun.

As well as the skins of animals, it can have different colors and shades. It all depends on the area where it will be used. So, security, riot police and any units operating in urban conditions, it is reasonable to disguise them as shades of asphalt and concrete, and therefore the urban form has predominantly gray tones.

In forests and fields, it is better to use green camouflage, in deserts - yellowish, and so on. If the unit is going to be sent to fight in some specific conditions, and the terrain is known in advance, camouflage is usually tried to give out the appropriate shades so that its use is appropriate. In many cases, this form is used along with special face paints that help blur its contours as well - as a rule, it is the head that unmasks the person, since its outlines are too recognizable.

Some camouflage patterns:

Sometimes, in addition to camouflage, local plants are also used to make the camouflage more realistic - they can be fixed directly on clothing. This practice is often used by snipers who take a static position - a person disguises even a weapon so that the brilliance does not give it away. And as a result, it completely merges with the terrain, turns out to be its natural part, is perceived as a small bump or remains invisible at all. Camouflage nets and other auxiliary camouflage elements are also great for hiding people and objects on the ground.

natural camouflage

Nature itself taught this method of passive protection. Many animals do not run away at the sight of a predator, but simply hide and successfully avoid the threat:

A night moth can spend daytime on a tree trunk and literally dissolve into the background of the bark, invisible to birds and insectivorous animals. Deer and other animals can also successfully camouflage themselves in the grass or leaf litter that hides them.

Predators also use similar means - among the grass, bushes and branches scorched by the sun, they instantly dissolve. The hare molts twice a year to match the color of the area - with the same goals.

How does camouflage work?

An important aspect of the expediency of using camouflage is not only the color, but also the size of the spots, as well as their relative position. Ideally, when they allow not only to blur, but also to break, literally "break" the silhouette of a person. Completely distorted body contours do not allow the enemy's vision to "assemble" the silhouette again, and even the most developed fantasy and intuition are useless.

Camouflage is, of course, very useful, but when using it, a person must also know in what conditions it will work especially effectively. A natural shadow helps to break the silhouette into shades and spots - the lack of lighting and additional spotting together create the perfect disguise.

Also, a person who wants to remain invisible should not make sudden movements, and if possible, try not to move at all. You should not impersonate sounds (talking, coughing, sneezing), smells (tobacco, perfume) and in any other way. If you need to move, you should use natural shelters, do not move at full height, periodically lie behind obstacles, and then camouflage will fully justify its purpose.

These rules are especially important to know and follow for a hunter who usually uses civilian camouflage. A person who decides to compete with animals in this respect must be extremely careful, choose clothes according to the season and the prevailing colors in the area.

History of modern camouflage

In military practice, modern typical multi-color camouflage began to be actively used already at the beginning of the twentieth century, and during the Second World War it was used together with one-color: it was mainly issued to snipers, Luftwaffe and SS special forces soldiers, and paratroopers.

In these times, all the advantages of a multi-colored military suit became clear to mankind, everyone was clearly convinced that it is not a luxury, and indeed it turns out to be much more effective than a plain one. Today, the troops use just such camouflage fabrics - multi-colored. Camouflage clothing made of them makes a person invisible on the ground with minimal effort on his part - and this has been proven in numerous local wars of the past and present century.

Camouflage allows you to hide your positions and even equipment from the enemy, to remain invisible, and, therefore, alive. Over the past decades, a huge number of shades and patterns have been tested, and at present, only the most effective fabrics are used in the troops of the whole world, capable of literally dissolving a person on the ground so much that he turns into a real invisible.

Camouflage in modern fashion

If we consider military-style clothing - specifically stylized, and not real army, you can see even more types and colors of camouflage. It turned out that multi-color fabrics with blurry patterns are not only practical in the war in the field, but also very beautiful. By making the colors just a little brighter, and sometimes even using the "military" fabric with its typical color, you can create very stylish things.

Both real army clothing from different countries, and things stylized as military, remain equally fashionable and relevant today. They are practical and almost always look neat - spots are lost among the washed out coloring. From the point of view of hunters, camouflage things have no equal at all - they allow people to successfully engage in their favorite craft.

Mankind has always been interested in issues of disguise. Increased attention to this topic was caused by the ability to merge with the terrain with the help of branches and grass tied to the body guaranteed good hunting, as a result - a person could feed himself. Over time, the art of disguise became very popular in military affairs. The ability to dissolve, not stand out, now kept the soldier alive.

Army camouflage. Start

The history of the development of camouflage patterns has only a few decades. This was quite enough for, after a short period of time, thanks to the intensive activity of military developers, a huge variety of camouflage suits appeared that could hide a person in any terrain.

The very first camouflage colors appeared in the nineteenth century. The soldiers of England during the Anglo-Boer War wore bright red uniforms. For the Boers, who already had the experience of camouflage, they were too visible on the ground. As a result, England suffered heavy losses of personnel. Therefore, the leadership of the country replaced the red uniforms with special marsh-colored clothes - “khaki”.

The second state whose army began to use camouflage was Germany. The colors of the camouflage of the German personnel consisted of thirty options. Preference was given to the very first, “fragmentation” sample. Camouflage got its name because its pattern was randomly scattered colored geometric shapes of various sizes. The "shrapnel" version of camouflage was first used by the German army in the First World War. Since the debut of this was successful, the Wehrmacht soldiers used it in World War II. At the same time, helmets with armored vehicles began to camouflage.

In Soviet times, all issues related to camouflage patterns and colors were dealt with by the group formed in 1919. graduate School military camouflage and the State Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Outstanding scientists were involved in this work - S. M. Vavilov, V. V. Sharonov and others. Thanks to fundamental scientific research, camouflage colors were developed that make it possible to visually disperse. large amoeba-shaped spots with a baggy form of camouflage clothing. Such a combination “breaks” the silhouette of a person, disperses the contours of his figure. A similar effect is typical for military camouflage of the time. The ability to disperse the outlines of the silhouette distinguished these patterns from hunting options, for which the main goal is to "merge" the object with the surrounding area.

Soviet developers paid special attention to the correct selection of colors for the design of amoeba-like spots. At the same time, the seasons and the characteristic features of the environment were taken into account. So, for the color of the area inherent in the summer season (grassy green), spots of dark and black colors are ideal. The autumn season is characterized by a yellow or dirty brown background. For him, Soviet technologists picked up dark brown deforming spots.

Camouflage was subject to both personnel and military equipment.

In 1927, Soviet developers of camouflage clothing supplied the military with domestic-made camouflage. This is a white winter suit and a brown summer hoodie.

Post-war developments of army camouflage

After the end of the Second World War, development went at an accelerated pace. Military designers of camouflage patterns, having considerable experience, realized that the colors of camouflage for the army must be selected taking into account the terrain, since they cannot be universal and suitable for any environment. Camouflage is much more effective in those cases if it is chosen both for a certain type of terrain on which hostilities are conducted, and for the season.

What are the colors of camouflage? The photos presented in the article will help you navigate this issue. There are really a lot of options, as you can see.

The Central Research and Testing Institute named after Karbyshev has developed the best military camouflage in the world. The colors of these camouflage suits, despite their not very attractive appearance, are ideal for our geographical latitude.

Camouflage during the Cold War

Developers from different countries approach the choice of camouflage patterns in their own way. This is due to the different types of terrain. Military technologists who develop camouflage suits for the army of a particular country take into account the fact that each branch of the military needs its own camouflage. Over time, it can change and improve. The years of the Cold War are considered to be one of the most fruitful periods in the history of the development of the art of disguise. At this time, camouflage attracted particular attention of developers.

Types and colors of the countries of the world

  • Europe and America. During the Cold War, the “forest” camouflage was created here. It is ideal for working in forest and deciduous terrain.
  • Central Asia and North Africa. The army of these states uses the "desert" type of camouflage suit.

  • Southeast Asia. The military uses jungle camouflage. It is ideal for tropical latitudes.
  • South Africa. The country's army has very few options for camouflage suits. This is due to the uniformity of the terrain, on which the “bush” camouflage hoodie is very effective.

Russian camouflage colors

KZM-P - until recently, the most common camouflage in Russia. The birch color is its second name, better known than the official one. The pattern has several more names: “golden” and “silver leaf”, “sunny bunny”, “border guard”. The principle of the pattern is the scattering of the contour of a person by simulating the play of light in the drawing. Initially developed back in Soviet times, it was widely used by KGB special forces, paratroopers and border guards.

It was a classic Russian version of camouflage, as it was ideal for the latitudes of the USSR. But over time, after discoveries in the field of camouflage art, the colors of Russian camouflage have changed and are no longer found in their original version. Its “clones” that have appeared are commercial options and have their own circle of admirers among hunters, fishermen and airsoft fans.

One of the most common camouflage patterns used by European armies is Woodland (American made). Since 1980, when this camouflage was released, and present time in Europe and the USA it is considered the best. Its popularity led to the appearance of "clones" and their distribution around the world. Woodland is a pattern in the form of spreading spots in two colors: brown and black. They are located on a light and dark green background. The disadvantage of this camouflage appears after it gets wet. When wet, it turns black and becomes noticeable. Recently, the original classic Woodland camouflage variant has been obsolete. This was the reason for its improvement. This is how the variations came about:

The principle of selecting a camouflage pattern

The main criterion in the design of the color scheme and its saturation is human vision. In the process of creating colors, the ability of the brain to highlight the contours of objects and recognize them is taken into account. There is an identification process. The smallest ideas about the contours are enough for the human brain to receive information about the object seen. With the help of the displaced corners of the picture and their corresponding colors, perception and identification are distorted - this is the main task that the camouflage suit performs. This principle is applicable to the manufacture of all types of camouflage clothing - military and hunting. At the same time, camouflage designers construct specific pattern patterns for each camouflage, their shapes, sizes, and the degree of contrast of nearby elements of the pattern. They can be large or small. Spots or stripes are applied at an angle of 30 or 60 degrees relative to the visual contours of the object.

Commercial camouflage pattern

Camouflage clothing is applicable not only in military affairs. When hunting or fishing, properly selected camouflage is also indispensable. Camouflage color variations not used for military camouflage suits have found their way into commercial camouflage. Suits, which for some reason were not put into service with the country's army, are actively used by private paramilitary structures - security firms, hunters and fans of tactical games. Camouflages for this category of consumers are produced by private companies in separate factories. Their products are suits, the colors of which are very similar to the army options. But they have one difference - there may be fewer colors in such products or, conversely, more (several additional ones have been added).

Moss camouflage color

Hunting is carried out in forest and field conditions. If hunting is planned in the forest, then the choice of camouflage suit depends on whether the forest is deciduous or coniferous. The solution to the problem will be the acquisition of camouflage "moss". His drawing contains green and perfectly replicates this plant. This costume has two options:

  • Summer. It is used in the warm season. The light natural fabric of the suit is well ventilated.
  • Winter. Designed to be worn in cold weather. Unlike the summer sample, the shades on this camouflage are much darker. This is achieved by additional gray. The brown color that is also available in the summer version is much darker here. The suit is made on the principle of two-layer clothing and is considered a good protection against moisture and strong winds. The winter set includes a hood, which is fastened with a zipper. This makes it possible to quickly remove it if necessary. Velcro on the hood allows you to tightly close the neck and head. The pockets are also equipped with Velcro fasteners to prevent loss of contents during vigorous movements. There are drawstrings at the bottom of the legs. This makes it easy to tuck trousers into berets, protects from dust. Moss camouflage is used by fishermen, hunters and tourists.

Pixel drawings

The armies of many countries use digital camouflage. These camouflage suits got their name because of the presence of individual pixels that appear during digital computer processing. At the heart of the work on the digital version, the peculiarity of the human eye to perceive the surrounding objects as a continuous whole was taken into account. Since there are no interrupted lines in nature, one small fragment is enough for the human brain, from which it later builds the entire image. Pixel patterns, having unnatural and unusual outlines, are used in order to reduce this ability of the brain to “complete” the missing fragments.

To interrupt lines and contours, pixel camouflage was invented. The names of the colors of the "digital" camouflage suits are as follows:

  • ACUPAT. Used for combat operations in urban environments or rocky deserts.
  • CADPAT. Good for woodland.
  • "Digital Flora". Used in forest areas. Especially effective if a person moves quickly. In this case, the eye is not able to focus on the object.

Camouflage for armored vehicles and aviation

In addition to protecting personnel, armored vehicles, military or strategically important buildings for the army, and aviation are also masked. The procedure for masking by applying a camouflage pattern is not laborious. This will take several hours. The main thing is to follow the instructions: you need to maintain the ratio of spots (their sizes and shades) inherent in each pattern. A pattern is only considered camouflage if it contains at least five stripes or spots. However, they must be at least two colors.

In the army of the Russian Federation, aircraft camouflage is practiced. For this purpose, pixel two-tone patterns are used. Unlike Russian aviation, the US Air Force does not carry out such a practice. US aircraft are predominantly painted neutral. grey colour. This, according to US military analysts, helps the aircraft to blend in, especially at long ranges, while camouflage against the sky is more likely to attract attention.

Digital patterns are used in the coloring of strategically important military facilities by both the US and Russian Armed Forces.

The art of disguise is especially important at the present time. In the conditions of the modern level of development of weapons, the absence of camouflage or its defect can lead to serious losses of personnel.
