The history of the Desert Eagle (English: “Desert Eagle”) dates back to the 80s of the last century. It was then that the idea of creating a self-loading pistol for super-powerful .357 magnum ammunition appeared in the minds of the gunsmiths of the famous company Magnum Research. Before DE, revolvers were produced for such powerful ammunition, intended both for official work and for hunting. In the USA, in addition to hunting with long-barreled weapons, hunting with “one-handed weapons” - huge revolvers, hung with optics and other accessories, is also popular. Therefore, on the American market, a hunting pistol chambered for the powerful and very popular 357 Magnum would be guaranteed to be in demand.

The pistol has a single-stack magazine, and depending on the caliber, it holds from seven to nine rounds. The fuse is mechanical, double-sided. Sights mechanical unregulated, but additional installation of adjustable ones is possible.

Rumors claim that the first samples of the Desert Eagle exploded right in the hands of testers - traditional automatic pistols could not cope with super-powerful ammunition. The Americans were unable to find a solution to this problem on their own and turned for help to colleagues from the equally famous Israeli company Israel Military Industries - IMI (today Israel Weapon Industries - IWI). The Israelis found an extremely unusual solution: the “Desert Eagle” actually began to work like a Kalashnikov assault rifle!

By the way, it was cooperation with the Israelis that gave rise to one of the most widespread rumors: that DE is an Israeli pistol. In Russia, this misconception has its roots in the weapons encyclopedia of Boris Zhuk, in one of the editions of which the model appeared as a weapon made in Israel. In fact, the Desert Eagle is more likely double citizenship": for assistance in development, Magnum Research granted its Israeli colleagues the right to produce a pistol under license with its markings. Therefore, today you can find Desert Eagle with both MR (Magnum Research) and IWI (Israel Military Industries) markings.

Anti-aircraft caliber

Desert Eagle is huge! Its length in the shortest version is about 260 mm, and the weight of the pistol without cartridges is 1700 g. Instead of traditional automatic operation schemes for pistols that use recoil energy, the DE implements the principle of venting gases into a chamber located under the barrel. Powder gases are vented through a hole located in close proximity to the chamber and are directed through a channel to the front of the barrel to a short-stroke piston. The piston pushes back the massive bolt, and the spent cartridge case is extracted. The gas tube and piston located in the barrel define the pistol's signature massive silhouette. The characteristic triangular muzzle section also gives brutality, and the relatively large stroke of the bolt frame dictates the long length of the weapon. The “automatic” scheme can play a cruel joke on the hunter: an unfinished cartridge cannot be fired simply by pressing the trigger again; you will either have to cock the hammer, which is quite inconvenient, considering huge size pistol, or reload the weapon, which will take a lot of time.

Over the years, the appearance of the Desert Eagle has changed; the pistol has had a large number of modifications. For all modifications of all calibers there were barrels of different lengths - from 154 to 254 mm. After the appearance of the 44-caliber pistol version, a modification of the pistol was created, which meant its independent modernization; it received the designation Mark VII. From that moment on, the Desert Eagle turned into a modular design, the basis of which was the basic platform - a frame with a trigger mechanism, a gas outlet drive and a bolt frame. The owner could, at his discretion, change the barrel, bolt and magazine, effectively receiving a new pistol.

The Desert Eagle is one of the few pistols (pistols, not all short-barreled weapons) that can fire powerful .357 magnum, 44 magnum and .50AE ammunition. Its first caliber was at one time one of the most powerful revolver ammunition, created by lengthening the .38 super cartridge case and increasing the powder charge. A very powerful revolver cartridge. 44 magnum, with a muzzle energy of 1500-1800 J, is too tough for any pistol except the Desert Eagle.

Version .50 AE deserves special mention. In the domestic metric system, this caliber corresponds to the figure 12.7 mm. Anyone who understands weapons knows that such ammunition is used in large-caliber sniper rifles, designed to destroy targets at distances of more than a kilometer, as well as machine guns and anti-aircraft installations, which should hit enemy equipment. In a word, this class of weapon can be called “anti-material”. And the developers placed such monstrous power in a “weapon of one hand”! The .50 AE cartridge has a muzzle energy of almost 2500 J, which is one of the highest values for all pistols and revolvers and is only slightly inferior to the energy of intermediate machine gun ammunition.

The Desert Eagle is unique: it has virtually no analogues, and only a few models of automatic pistols can compete with it at least in some way. It's about about the Wildey, Automag and LAR Grizzly pistols, which can also use powerful revolver and pistol cartridges. Wildey and Automag have an original design and are purely similar in appearance due to the shape of the frame, bolt and barrel. The LAR Grizzly is a "mutated" version of the good old Colt 1911. However, neither of these pistols was widely used. Moreover, all of these samples have now been discontinued, while the Desert Eagle is still “fresh and full of energy.”

The most modern modifications are produced exclusively on the Mark XIX platform. The upper bar for installing sights was initially flat, then received two grooves for more convenient installation additional equipment, and modern versions are available only with a Picatinny rail. The latest modifications received a compensator made directly in the triangular barrel directly behind the muzzle.

Cactus tasting

The author of the article literally idolized this two-kilogram piece of iron, and shooting with it was almost his main “weapon dream.” But after a couple of shots, the delight completely disappeared, and there were quite a few reasons for this. The first is weight: “2 kg” does not sound too intimidating, but it is almost twice as much as most pistols, and it feels good. The next point is ergonomics: it is almost impossible to grasp the handle with one hand, unless you have very long fingers and simply huge palms. Even if you “hugged” the pistol with both hands, you felt as if you were holding a huge log.

Performing discharge operations with one hand is extremely problematic: thumb It just doesn’t reach the magazine eject button, the handle is so big. To press the button, the gun must be rotated in your hand, and most likely you will need a second hand to do this. You may also not be able to remove the pistol from the slide stop with your thumb the first time. Loading a cartridge into the chamber is extremely inconvenient: the huge bolt lies in the loading hand like a log.

The reliability of the Desert Eagle also raises questions. Perhaps I came across very low-quality ammunition, but almost every time I manually chambered a cartridge into the chamber, the bolt jammed. In one of the eight shots, the pistol jammed, and the bolt, moving back, did not fully return to its original position.

Prop masters love to arm all sorts of super agents with the Desert Eagle. It was they who wielded the team of cyborg zombies in the film “Universal Soldier”; all the agents in “The Matrix” had such pistols with them. These pistols look especially impressive in the hands of screen beauties, because in their miniature hands an already impressive pistol becomes simply huge. Pamela Anderson carried this piece of metal with her in the series and feature film"VIP" Demi Moore, as the villain, shot two Desert Eagles at once in the film Charlie's Angels.

The Desert Eagle's recoil is strong, but it doesn't break your arms, as is commonly believed. Although, if the shooter does not have the stable skill of holding a pistol correctly or simply holds it too relaxed, a massive bolt can actually “fly” into his forehead, exactly as it happens in videos on YouTube. You shouldn’t shoot a pistol without headphones and glasses, even at an open shooting range - the sound is really loud, and the cartridge case, due to the peculiarity of the pistol’s recoil, in which it turns slightly to the left, can fly straight into the eye if you have an unsteady grip.

Film gun

We have not found any documentary evidence of the use of a Desert Eagle pistol of any modification or caliber for official purposes. There is an opinion that the pistol was used by Israeli special forces, but its adherents most likely confuse the “Eagle” with the Baby Eagle, a regular 9-mm Jerico 941 pistol produced by the same Israel Weapon Industries. Another version says that the Desert Eagle was used by detachments of Canadian rangers to finish off wounded animals. This option has a right to exist - it’s easy and even humane to kill a dying and suffering animal, even a large one, such as a wild boar, elk or even a bear, from DE (“just to be sure”).

In any case, the Desert Eagle is inferior to almost any pistol as a service weapon. It is inconvenient to carry with you, especially hidden. Strong recoil forces the shooter to think about how not to drop the weapon from his hands, and not how to hit a hiding enemy. Even the legendary power of the Desert Eagle can be written down as a disadvantage: such a pistol is not needed in official activities to shoot “only” at people. Despite this, there is a demand for the pistol, and considerable demand, given the number of modifications that the developer offers on the official website. Apparently, the Desert Eagle’s destiny is recreational shooting, pure “bang-a-hoo” and nothing more.

However, this is not its main purpose. The Desert Eagle is a movie cannon! It was in this field that the monstrous pistol achieved its main successes. If the pistols were alive, then Desert Eagle would have gotten himself an agent in Hollywood long ago. The pistol even has an official “portfolio” - on the Magnum Research website there is a separate section that lists all the films in which the company’s weapons were filmed.

The Desert Eagle has become one of the main pistols for Hollywood big men. One of its main on-screen “users” is Arnold Schwarzenegger, which is not surprising: any other pistol is simply lost in the powerful clutches of the Austrian big man.

The Desert Eagle is the most recognizable pistol in the world. Why him? Gun trends change quickly, with more advanced models hitting the market every year. But in cinema there is not much pursuit of new products. Therefore, in films you can often find completely impractical, but beautiful models. One of these is the Desert Eagle pistol. Translated from English it is called “Desert Eagle”, another popular name is “Deagle”. This model has been filmed, is being filmed and will continue to be filmed in films due to its impressive dimensions and stylish design. Today we will find out what the Deagle pistol is and whether it is as good in life as on the screen.

Background

As you know, hunting with short-barreled weapons is very popular in the United States. It is noteworthy that this type of hunting arose not because of the Americans’ craving for thrills (although this could not have happened without it), but because of completely pragmatic considerations. The fact is that in many areas of the United States, the distance between neighboring houses reaches about half a kilometer and they are scattered over impressive territories. Therefore, when shooting with a rifle, there was a chance of hitting a neighboring house or, even worse, a neighbor. At the same time, shoot at small animals such as squirrels from smoothbore weapons no one wanted it either. So short-barreled weapons began to spread hunting weapon, which in the mid-70s became large-caliber, which opened up the possibility of shooting at large animals.

Development

There was a demand, but there were very few pistols themselves. As for revolvers, although they were very reliable, they still remained revolvers. Seeing the market's interest in powerful weapons, Magnum Research began developing such weapons. The company clearly decided that the new pistol should work with the 357 Magnum cartridge. The ammunition was very powerful, so the classic automatic pistol design did not suit it. To solve this problem, designers had to work hard. As a result, they found a way out - using a gas exhaust system similar to those equipped with rifles.

In many sources you can find information that this system was created not by the Americans, but by the Israelis, but this is not so. They will participate in the production of “Desert Eagle” a little later. In 1980, the device was patented, and a year later the first test “Deagle” was born. In total, the pistol was created in a little less than three years. Despite such lengthy work, pilot samples of the Deagle showed that designers still have work to do. The weapon required very serious modifications; it was capricious in operation and had a short service life.

After the first unsuccessful tests, the Israeli company Israel Military Industries (IMI) joined the work on a powerful pistol. The Israelis were able to bring the pistol to acceptable parameters. And this, as a rule, is an even more labor-intensive process than creating a fundamentally new model. Therefore, it would be extremely incorrect to neglect their merits in the creation of “Deagle”. It took about a year to fine-tune the pistol. As a result, the long-awaited Eagle 327 appeared on the market. The first version differed from subsequent versions of the model by a light-weight frame and a classic barrel rifling. Soon the frame was replaced with a steel one, which made it possible to increase the life of the weapon and its weight.

First modernization

In 1985 Eagle pistol survived the first restyling. It began to be equipped with a barrel with polygonal rifling. Thanks to this change, the initial force increased slightly, cleaning became easier, recoil decreased, and service life increased. It was since then that the word Desert was added to the name of the pistol.

Second modernization

Four years later, the pistol was modified again. New model called Desert Eagle Mark VII. The pistol received a new trigger mechanism that allows you to adjust the pressing force and trigger travel. This innovation expanded the scope of the “Deagle” - now it could be used in sports shooting.

Another innovation of 1987 was the installation of a dovetail guide on the barrel, which allows the pistol to be equipped with all sorts of sighting devices. Besides, this version was produced for three Magnum cartridges at once: 357, 41 and 44. However, the 41st cartridge was soon stopped being used.

Latest upgrade

In 1995, Desert Eagle production was moved to America. Here, a year later, the most famous version of the pistol to date, the Mark XIX, was created. Initially, the model was developed for the 50AE cartridge. There were also options that worked with 357 and 44 Magnum ammunition. The new cartridge turned a powerful pistol into a real hand cannon. The muzzle energy of the shot was 1500-1800 J. Thus, the weapon began to be suitable for hunting large animal. Moreover, in case of a hit, defeat from the first shot was guaranteed.

By and large, there was no need for such powerful ammunition, since other cartridges coped with all the hunters’ tasks. However, it was the power of the 50AE ammunition that made the weapon legendary and unique of its kind. The Deagle pistol, the photo of which looks very impressive, began to attract directors and screenwriters, who began to arm their heroes with pleasure. In the movie, the Desert Eagle can be seen in the hands of a variety of characters, from drug dealers to intelligence agents. It is also often found in computer games ah, the most popular of which are: “Counter Strike” and “Warface”. A review of the Deagle pistol shows that it is not that good, and here's why.

Practical use

In the movies, “Deagle” was used by many, but in real life the police and special forces showed no desire to take possession of it. Despite the high power of ammunition and the “ability” to handle them, the Desert Eagle pistol had a lot of shortcomings. Therefore, using it as a weapon for professionals was extremely risky.

The first drawback is visible to the naked eye. These are, of course, very impressive dimensions and weight. In the movies they create a terrifying effect, but in life they really burden the owner. To carry such a pistol concealed, you either need to be large yourself, or wear large clothes. Let's say the dimensions of the pistol can be hidden, but what about its weight, under which any pocket will sag?

To be convinced of the first drawback, it is not necessary to use a Deagle pistol. A photo is quite enough for this. But in order to fully understand the second drawback of the pistol, you need to fire it. It's about giving back. It is more than respectable when fired from the Desert Eagle. However, it is worth noting that if we compare the recoil of the Deagle with the recoil of revolvers of the same caliber, then our hero will, of course, be softer. The reason for this is the automation system and polygonal cutting of the barrel. These design features Although they reduce returns, but not significantly. It definitely cannot be called comfortable. However, for a cartridge with such power this is not surprising.

The comfort of the weapon is also negatively affected by the width of the handle. For many shooters, confidently holding a pistol in hand will be problematic. And the heavy weight and strong recoil will make this task even more difficult. But there is another side to the coin - when shooting with two hands, a wide handle is even more comfortable than a narrow one. And again, given the power of the pistol, there is no shame in taking it with both hands, because in life everything is a little different than in the movies.

Large controls with a clear action are good, but they, again, interfere with comfortable wearing. The presence of rails for installing sighting devices expands the capabilities of the Desert Eagle. However, professionals would not equip an already large and heavy pistol with additional devices.

Automation

"Deagle" is a pistol with serious dimensions and a more than serious cartridge. But for many gunsmiths this is not its main feature. The automaticity of the pistol has no analogues among mass-produced models of short-barreled weapons - that’s what’s really interesting. The Desert Eagle's automatic system operates according to a scheme for removing powder gases from the barrel. It was thanks to this decision that it became possible to use such powerful ammunition.

The pistol has a special hole near the chamber. During a shot, part of the powder gases leaves the barrel through it and begins to put pressure on the piston. The piston, in turn, transmits an impulse to the bolt frame. Moving backwards, the bolt rotates and unlocks the barrel bore, locked with four stops. Then the spent cartridge case is ejected and the hammer is cocked.

During the reverse movement, a new cartridge is sent into the chamber, the bolt rotates again, thereby locking the barrel. After this, the weapon is ready for a new shot. An interesting fact is that the gas outlet and the barrel are made in the form of one part. This has a positive effect on the reliability of the pistol and its durability. However, this design solution also has a drawback. The fact is that this pistol is not recommended for use with bullets whose casing ends before the narrowing begins. In this case, the gas outlet may become leaded, and cleaning it is quite inconvenient.

Now let's talk about the ammunition for which the Desert Eagle is still produced.

357 Magnum

The ammunition was developed by Smith & Wesson as a replacement for the obsolete 38 Special cartridge used by police. Despite the fact that the name of the ammunition indicates a difference in caliber, they fire the same bullets. This measure was taken to avoid confusion. The actual diameter of the cartridges is 9.12 mm. The new ammunition differs from the old one only in the length of the cartridge case (34.77 mm), which made it possible to increase the weight of gunpowder and give the bullet 800 J of kinetic energy.

At the same time, the recoil has also increased, which has made it a little more difficult to promote the cartridge on the market and among police officers. However, by 1950, the 357 Magnum cartridge had become one of the main cartridges for most police departments. At the same time, it began to spread among hunters. Most often it was used when shooting from carbines. But short-barreled weapons chambered for this cartridge were also popular among hunters. So the ammunition became widespread and many modifications differed from each other only in the bullet. Despite its age, the 357 Magnum is still in demand to this day.

44 Magnum

This ammunition was never used for combat and was made exclusively for hunting. It was created in 1955 as a powerful alternative to the 357. In short-barreled weapons, the 44 is used, as a rule, for self-defense from wild animals. But if you equip a rifle or carbine with this cartridge, then it reaches a higher level and is recognized as a high-precision ammunition for hunting. Depending on the length, brand of gunpowder, and length of the weapon barrel, the energy of the cartridge ranges from 900-2200 J.

50 AE

Another purely If the 44 Magnum can be used at least somewhere, then this 12.7 mm ammunition is a blatant overkill. However, they say that it is used to knock out door locks. Well, it's quite possible.

Pneumatic version

“Deagle” is a pistol with a big name, which means that, like many other famous models, it has a pneumatic analogue from the Umarex company. The silhouette of the pistol clearly resembles a combat model, but it cannot be called an exact copy. The Deagle air pistol is equipped with a double-action trigger mechanism. You can fire either self-cocking or with pre-cocking. The pistol has a BlowBack sliding bolt mechanism, which makes shooting spectacular, creates some kind of recoil and has a detrimental effect on carbon dioxide consumption.

A double-sided fuse, designed like a combat safety, protects the shooter from an accidental shot. The bolt release and magazine release button are made for beauty. When the bolt stop lever is moved, a spring-loaded receiver is brought forward, in which there is space for installing a drum-clip. The latter holds 8 Diablo bullets.

The 12-gram ones are installed in the handle and clamped with a clamping screw. The system has high tightness ratings. And the high consumption of CO 2 (one cylinder is enough for 30-40 shots) is associated with the use of the BlowBack system. Thanks to the use of classic bullets and a rifled barrel, the pistol can outshine all competitors in terms of accuracy. The shot speed is also pleasing - 130-140 m/s. In addition to the basic version of the pneumatic Desert Eagle, there is also a children's version, but due to its reduced dimensions it is less reminiscent of the original.

DIY toy gun "Deagle"

The Desert Eagle pistol is often seen in films and computer games, so many people not only buy toy versions of it, but also make them themselves. The most common options homemade pistols are paper and wooden models.

How to make a Deagle pistol out of paper? If you show patience and perseverance, then from such a simple material as paper you can make an excellent copy of a military weapon while preserving small details. A paper Deagle pistol is made using free program Pepakura Designer. By loading the gun scans into it, you can see in which places to glue its individual elements. This raises the question: “How to draw a Deagle pistol?” Don't worry, you just need to download and print the diagrams.

Well, how can you make a Deagle pistol from wood, since this material is less pliable than paper? Of course, in the wooden version of the pistol, there will not be such strict adherence to small details. And the Deagle pistol is made from wood in a completely different way. In the simplest version, using a special template, parts are cut out of plywood, which, when placed on top of each other and glued together, create a three-dimensional model.

Very interesting pistols can also be made from Legos. deagle? Quite simple, you just need to be creative and stock up on a good construction set with an abundance of different parts. Below in the photo is one of the successful examples of the “Desert Eagle” assembled from Lego.

Conclusion

Having examined the Deagle pistol, we can conclude that its only reasonable use is hunting. He has many trump cards in this field. First, adaptation from one caliber to another. Secondly, the possibility of installing a longer barrel. And thirdly, the possibility of mounting sighting devices. The weapon is not cheap, but to cover all its capabilities, you need to purchase three different revolvers, which is, of course, much more expensive.

The Deagle is a pistol with charisma that any man would certainly want to hold in his hands. However, it cannot be used for anything more serious than hunting and recreational shooting.

The Desert Eagle pistol did not gain fame on army service or in special units, but is rightfully one of the most famous pistols in the whole world. It can safely be called a legendary example of a rifleman who has become famous among the broad masses. The popularization of the pistol was greatly facilitated by computer games, as well as various films in which it was often used due to its impressive size and terrifying appearance.

The Desert Eagle pistol (translated as “Desert Eagle”) is a large-caliber .50 self-loading pistol (12.7 mm, for a minute, this is the caliber of heavy machine guns). It was created in 1983 and is the fruit joint works the American company Magnum Research and the Israeli company Israel Military Industries, which has been producing it for a long time. The pistol was initially positioned as a hunting weapon, as well as a weapon for self-defense against various wild animals and attacks from criminal elements.

The huge, angular pistol weighing up to two kilograms is recognizable all over the world and has a reputation as a superweapon among pistols for good reason. This is largely due to the very powerful unitary cartridge - .50 Action Express (12.7x32.6 millimeters). This ammunition is considered one of the most lethal pistol ammunition on the planet. The cartridge is distinguished by the presence of a 20-gram blunt-headed bullet with a truly enormous stopping effect. Of course, hunting a bear or other large forest inhabitants with such a pistol is a rather dubious idea, but even when meeting with large predator If you have a Desert Eagle pistol at hand, you will have a chance of staying alive.

The original patent application for the new pistol was filed by Bernard S. White, an employee of the American company Magnum Research, in January 1983. Subsequently, this patent served as the basis for the development of the Desert Eagle pistol, the first working copy of which was released in the USA in the same year. After this, the pistol underwent final development at the Israeli company Israel Military Industries and in December 1985 received a second patent, which finally approved the characteristics and appearance of the weapon, which was put into mass production. The pistol is in stable demand on the market despite quite high price, depending on the model and caliber, it starts at about $1,600; for example, the “Desert Eagle, .357 Magnum, Black” model will cost a US resident today $1,572.

Initially, mass production of the new pistol was launched in Israel at production facilities Israel Military Industries, in 1995-2000 it was moved to the Saco Defense plant in Maine, USA, but then returned to Israel due to the acquisition of the Saco plant by General Dynamics. Since 2009, the pistol has again been produced in the USA by Magnum Research. Today, the pistol is available in three main calibers: .357 (magazine capacity 9 rounds), .44 (magazine capacity 8 rounds) and .50 (magazine capacity 7 rounds).

The initial goal of Magnum Research representatives was to create a new, truly unique sports and hunting self-loading pistol chambered for one of the most powerful revolver cartridges at that time. 357 Magnum (9x33 mm). New pistol was supposed to compete with revolvers of the same caliber for long-distance silhouette sport shooting and hunting. It is worth noting that in the United States, hunting with “one-handed weapons” is quite popular - large revolvers that can be hung with various tactical accessories and optics. In this regard, a new hunting pistol chambered for a powerful cartridge would be guaranteed to find its buyers, and so it ultimately happened.

From a technical point of view, the Desert Eagle pistol was designed according to a design that is typical not for self-loading pistols, but for automatic rifles. In its automation, the designers used the principle of removing powder gases for reloading. The gas outlet tube is located under the barrel of the pistol, and the powder gases are discharged directly to the bolt frame. Locking is performed by turning the bolt cylinder. The bolt itself and the locking with lugs (larvae) are reminiscent of the mechanism that was implemented in the famous American M16 automatic rifle. The use of such a system by pistol designers was dictated, among other things, by the power of the cartridges used, which exceed those usually used in self-loading pistols. The use of the most powerful .50 Action Express cartridge (12.7 × 32.6 mm) made the Desert Eagle pistol competitive in those areas in which revolvers had previously reigned supreme. The .50 Action Express cartridge was developed in 1988 specifically for this pistol model. The energy of its expansive bullet weighing 19 grams is 2200 joules.

The pistol bolt has four lugs that engage with the breech of the barrel. The pistol uses a hammer-type trigger mechanism, the safety is mechanical, double-sided, it blocks the bolt of the weapon. Desert Eagle sights are open and non-adjustable. The pistol is equipped with single-row magazines designed for 7-9 rounds, depending on the caliber of the weapon.

When fired, powder gases are diverted through a hole located in the immediate vicinity of the chamber, after which they are directed through the barrel bore to the front of the barrel to a short-stroke piston. The piston then pushes back the pistol's massive slide, after which the spent cartridge case is extracted. The piston and gas tube of the Desert Eagle pistol, located in the barrel, define the signature, recognizable massive silhouette of the weapon. The brutality of weapons is enough large dimensions It also gives a characteristic muzzle cut, which has a triangular shape. The long length of the pistol is dictated by the relatively large stroke of the bolt frame.

Since the start of mass production, several models of the Desert Eagle pistol have been created. The Mark I and Mark VII models have already been discontinued. Features of the Mark I model were a number of differences in the design of the pistol (location of the grip cheek, fire switch). The Mark VII model was distinguished by the presence of a Weaver rail on the barrel, which made it possible to install various additional accessories on the weapon: tactical flashlights, laser designators, optical sights. This model also received an adjustable trigger. Pistols of these models could use .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum cartridges. The most modern modifications of the pistol are produced exclusively on the basis of the Mark XIX model. It was created on the basis of the Mark VII pistol and is available today in three calibers. 357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .50 Action Express, also differing in barrel length - 6 or 10 inches. At the same time, re-equipping a pistol to use cartridges of a different caliber can be done quite simply: replace the barrel, magazine and bolt. These steps can also be performed in the field.

The length of the Desert Eagle pistol, even with the shortest 6-inch (152 mm) barrel, is 27 centimeters. Such dimensions make the weapon extremely impractical in urban shootout conditions, as well as inconvenient to carry in Everyday life and a disadvantageous option as a means of self-defense. Besides big size cartridges used with the pistol has led to the fact that its handle, which houses a single-stack magazine, is very inconvenient to grip. People with small hands find it difficult to even simply hold this weapon, let alone fire from it.

Due to the large size, strong recoil, heavy weight, as well as a small magazine capacity, this pistol was never considered by intelligence services or the military as a suitable weapon. It is worth noting that the manufacturer has never positioned the Desert Eagle as an army or police weapon, always highlighting its hunting purpose. Moreover, the Desert Eagle pistol has never been tested in difficult operating conditions; the weapon is considered very sensitive to maintenance. All this did not prevent this pistol from earning the image of an ultimate weapon; sometimes it is even called a “hand cannon”; in many ways, this image is actively cultivated by computer games and the film industry. In any case, this is exactly the case when the caliber matters and the pistol is rightfully classified as one of the most powerful representatives of small arms. The Desert Eagle was originally created for hunting big game and protecting the shooter from dangerous large animals; the .50 Action Express cartridge has a very strong stopping effect, and the manufacturer assures that the weapon can protect the owner even from a hippopotamus.

Due to its heavy weight, which can reach two kilograms, the pistol is very difficult to hold correctly. The high power of the cartridge leads to very strong recoil when firing, as well as a very loud shot sound. In fact, in indoors Firing this pistol using .50 Action Express ammunition may cause damage to the shooter's hearing aids, even if the shooter is using dedicated headphones. Therefore, .50AE cartridges are simply prohibited in many indoor shooting ranges. When firing a pistol, a large tongue of flame appears, which escapes from a barrel that is not equipped with a flash suppressor. This flash makes it very easy to detect the shooter’s position, and at dusk, the flash from your own shot temporarily blinds the shooter.

The recoil when firing from such a “hand cannon” when using .50 caliber cartridges is high even when holding the weapon with two hands, although lower than that of other types of hand-held small arms of a similar caliber. The recoil is lower due to the lower initial speed and mass of the bullet, as well as due to the implemented automatic mechanism, which extends the transfer of the recoil impulse of the shot to the shooter over time. When fired, the pistol goes to the left for right-handers, and to the right for left-handers, which is typical for any firearm. But due to the very powerful .50AE caliber cartridge, this effect is expressed as clearly as possible in the Desert Eagle pistol. Experts note that if the shooter’s grip is not strong enough or the muscles are not strong enough, the recoil of a shot can lead to a pistol hitting him in the face.

We can definitely say that as a service weapon, the Desert Eagle is inferior to almost any pistol. It is inconvenient to wear, and completely impossible to conceal. Strong recoil when firing makes the shooter think more about how not to drop the pistol from his hands than about hitting the enemy hiding behind cover. Even special power can also be considered a disadvantage for official use; such a pistol is simply not needed for shooting “only” at people. Despite all my obvious shortcomings, the pistol is in strong demand on the market, which is confirmed by the huge number of modifications that are available to customers on official websites.

Perhaps one of the main purposes of the pistol, in addition to direct sport shooting and hunting, was a film career, in which the weapon really achieved great success. The Magnum Research website even created a special section that can be called an official “portfolio”: it lists all the feature films in which the Desert Eagle pistol has appeared.

This pistol is not used in any unit of any power structure in the world, but everyone knows it. Not a single person seriously involved in practical shooting will say a kind word about him, and at the same time he is a legend. A terrible monster with truly destructive force, enclosed in the dimensions of a “weapon of one hand”.

Here's how Popular Mechanics tests this pistol.

Photo 2.

The history of the Desert Eagle (English: “Desert Eagle”) dates back to the 80s of the last century. It was then that the idea of creating a self-loading pistol for super-powerful .357 magnum ammunition appeared in the minds of gunsmiths.

Development of the pistol was started in the USA by Magnum Research in January 1983. The design is based on the developments of Bernard White. Later, the documentation was transferred to the Israeli arms company Israel Military Industries, which completed the work. The final version of the IMI Desert Eagle pistol entered the world arms market in 1985.

Photo 3.

Rumors claim that the first samples of the Desert Eagle exploded right in the hands of testers - traditional automatic pistols could not cope with super-powerful ammunition. The Americans were unable to find a solution to this problem on their own and turned to colleagues from the equally famous Israeli company Israel Military Industries - IMI (today Israel Weapon Industries - IWI) for help. The Israelis found an extremely unusual solution: the “Desert Eagle” actually began to work like a Kalashnikov assault rifle!

The IMI Desert Eagle large-caliber pistol had a significantly different design from other pistols. In classic pistols, to provide the ability to conduct semi-automatic and sometimes automatic fire, designers used a blowback or semi-blowback bolt. When firing from a weapon designed according to these schemes, the function of a gas piston is performed by the sleeve and barrel, which set the bolt frame in motion, pushing it back; When moving, the frame cocks the hammer and fires a new cartridge. In the IMI Desert Eagle pistol, such a design could not be implemented due to the use of high-power cartridges, so a gas vent mechanism is used to operate the automation. Under the barrel there is a gas outlet tube, which has a length from the chamber and almost to the end of the barrel. Powder gases enter the gas outlet tube and drive the bolt frame together with the bolt group. The pistol's bolt resembles a slightly smaller and inverted bolt assembly assault rifle M16.

In fact, the Desert Eagle rather has “dual citizenship”: for assistance in development, Magnum Research granted its Israeli colleagues the right to produce a pistol under license with its markings.

Photo 5.

The “automatic” scheme can play a cruel joke on the hunter: an unfinished cartridge cannot be fired simply by pressing the trigger again; you will have to either cock the hammer, which is quite inconvenient, given the huge size of the pistol, or reload the weapon, which will take a lot of time.

Photo 6.

Version .50 AE deserves special mention. In the domestic metric system, this caliber corresponds to the figure 12.7 mm. Anyone who understands weapons knows that such ammunition is used in large-caliber sniper rifles, designed to destroy targets at distances of more than a kilometer, as well as machine guns and anti-aircraft guns, which must hit enemy equipment.

We are talking about Wildey, Automag and LAR Grizzly pistols, which can also use powerful revolver and pistol cartridges. Wildey and Automag have an original design and are purely similar in appearance due to the shape of the frame, bolt and barrel. The LAR Grizzly is a "mutated" version of the good old Colt 1911. However, neither of these pistols was widely used. Moreover, all of these samples are currently discontinued, while the Desert Eagle is still “fresh and full of energy.”

Carrying out unloading operations with one hand is extremely problematic: the thumb simply does not reach the magazine eject button, the handle is so large.

Photo 8.

Photo 9.

Film gun

There is not a single documentary evidence of the use of a Desert Eagle pistol of any modification and caliber for official purposes. There is an opinion that the pistol was used by Israeli special forces, but its adherents most likely confuse the “Eagle” with the Baby Eagle - a regular 9-mm Jerico 941 pistol produced by the same Israel Weapon Industries. Another version says that the Desert Eagle was used by detachments of Canadian rangers to finish off wounded animals. This option has a right to exist - finishing off a dying and suffering animal from DE, even a large one, such as a wild boar, elk or even a bear, is easy and even humane (“just to be sure”).

Apparently, the destiny of the “Desert Eagle” is recreational shooting, pure “bab-hunting” and nothing more.

Photo 10.

Photo 11.

Photo 12.

The most modern modifications are produced exclusively on the Mark XIX platform. The upper rail for mounting sights was initially flat, then received two grooves for more convenient installation of additional equipment, and modern versions are produced only with a Picatinny rail. The latest modifications received a compensator made directly in the triangular barrel directly behind the muzzle.

Film gun

Prop masters love to arm all sorts of super agents with the Desert Eagle. It was they who wielded the team of cyborg zombies in the film “Universal Soldier”; all the agents in “The Matrix” had such pistols with them. These pistols look especially impressive in the hands of screen beauties, because in their miniature hands an already impressive pistol becomes simply huge. Pamela Anderson carried this piece of metal with her in the series and feature film “VIP”. Demi Moore, as the villain, shot two Desert Eagles at once in the film Charlie's Angels.

Photo 13.

The magazine capacity of the IMI Desert Eagle pistol is less than that of standard pistols of the late 20th century. due to the impressive size of the cartridges used. The most common modification of the Desert Eagle is the version chambered for the .41 Remington Magnum, but the version chambered for the .50 Action Express has become truly iconic.

One of the serious disadvantages of the pistol is its weight. Almost two kilograms of combat steel, of course, will make anyone confident, but it’s not enough just to hold a weapon in your hands, you also need to fire it accurately. It is for this reason that the IMI Desert Eagle is not widely used as a military weapon. Similar pistol relatives are almost half the weight, and their magazine capacity is slightly higher. A .45ACP bullet fired from a Colt М1911А1 has almost the same stopping effect, but the weapon itself weighs one and a half times less. Consumers have a reasonable question: why buy a pistol weighing almost 2 kg, if even the most powerful assault carbines, such as the M4A1, weigh only 1 kg more?

Photo 14.

And yet the main advantages of the IMI Desert Eagle pistol are: civilian weapons are its terrifying appearance and stopping effect. One hit to any part of the body is guaranteed to incapacitate the enemy. It is for this reason that the pistol has become popular in the civilian market as a weapon for self-defense and hunting.
Speaking about reliability, it is worth mentioning one very important circumstance: the pistol is sensitive to contamination, so owners constantly have to clean it, otherwise the risk of delays when shooting increases significantly.

Available in several modifications:

- IMI Desert Eagle Mk I- first option. The frames of the Mk I modification pistols were made of aluminum alloy or stainless steel. Mk I pistols were equipped with 6, 8, 10 and 14 inch barrels chambered for .357 S&W Magnum and .44 S&W Magnum cartridges. It is worth saying that the modification with a 14-inch barrel is not widespread.

-IMI Desert Eagle Mk VII- differed from the Mk I in the design of the controls and grip cheeks. The Mk VII modification also received a trigger with adjustable force and a mount for a laser designator or tactical flashlight. Mk VII pistols were chambered for .357 S&W Magnum, .41 Remington Magnum and .44 S&W Magnum, and since 1991, .50 Action Express.

-IMI Desert Eagle Mk XIX- a modernized version of the Mk VII model. Available with 6" and 10" barrels only, chambered for .357 S&W Magnum, .41 Remington Magnum, .44 S&W Magnum, .440 Cor-bon and .50 Action Express.

An early version of the Desert Eagle pistol chambered for .357 Magnum

One of the largest pistols in the world, the Desert Eagle, is the result of collaboration the American company Magnum Research and the Israeli IMI (Israel Military Industries). The goal of the founders of Magnum Research was to create a sport-hunting self-loading pistol chambered for one of the most powerful revolver cartridges - .357 Magnum, which could compete with revolvers of the same caliber in long-range silhouette shooting and hunting. Work on this project began in 1978. The first patents were received in 1980, and the next year a prototype was ready. However, the weapon required serious improvement. In particular, it was necessary to improve the reliability of the automation, the operating principle of which was borrowed from the M16 assault rifle - removing part of the powder gases from the barrel and locking it with a rotating bolt. The use of such a system is dictated by the power of the cartridge.

In order to improve the design, the creators of the pistol began collaborating with the Israeli IMI, a company with many years of experience in the design and production of small arms. In 1982, the Eagle 357 pistol, put into mass production in Israel, began to go on sale. The first 1000 copies had a frame made of light alloy, which was later replaced by steel. In 1985, the barrels now began to have polygonal rifling instead of hexagonal, and the pistol itself was given a new name - Desert Eagle. The Mark I variant was produced with a frame made of light alloy, carbon steel and stainless steel. Other options differed mainly in the shape of the safety lever and the cheeks of the handle. The Mark VII had an adjustable trigger. The Mark I and Mark VII were chambered for the .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum and .44 Magnum cartridges. Mark VII frames, variants chambered for .357 Magnum and those using larger caliber cartridges differ in size. In 1989, the Mark VII was modified, receiving enlarged safety and bolt stop levers, as well as a slightly modified trigger mechanism. The Mark VII barrel has dovetail slots at the top for mounting accessories. In 1995 - 2000 production was transferred to the Saco Defense factory in the United States, and then returned to the Israel Military Industries factories due to the purchase of the Saco factory by General Dynamics. In 1996, the most powerful of all Desert Eagle variants was introduced and put into production, using the .50 AE cartridge specially created for it.

The .50 AE cartridge (far right) compared with the 9mm Parabellum, 7.62×25, .357 SIG, 10mm Auto, .40 S&W and .45 GAP cartridges (from left to right)

The caliber of the bullet in the metric system is 12.7 mm, and the length of the cartridge case is 33 mm. The muzzle energy is 1500 - 1800 J. The rim has a smaller diameter than the sleeve itself and coincides with the diameter of the rim of the cartridge case. 44 Magnum, due to which the caliber of the pistol can be changed by replacing only the barrel and magazine. But to adapt the pistol to use the .357 Magnum cartridge, the bolt and casing also need to be replaced, since the diameters of the rim in this case do not match. The standard barrel can be replaced with barrels longer length. Changing the caliber and barrel length makes the weapon more versatile in use, which is especially important for hunters. However, the main change in the design of the 50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol was a new “platform”, that is, a frame, as well as a bolt and casing of increased dimensions. Currently, all variants of the pistol are produced on this "platform", designated Mark XIX. This allows the shooter to purchase one pistol chambered for any cartridge, from .357 Magnum to .50 AE, and subsequently, without purchasing a new weapon, change the caliber by purchasing only a few necessary components, which is very profitable from a financial point of view. The Desert Eagle is currently being produced in the USA.

The automation operates according to a scheme that removes part of the powder gases from the barrel bore. The barrel bore is locked by a rotating bolt with four lugs. Through the gas outlet hole in the barrel wall, located in front of the chamber, part of the powder gases flows forward through the gas outlet channel and then down into the gas outlet chamber. Then the gases act on the piston, which transmits the impulse to the bolt frame (casing), which, moving back, turns the bolt with four lugs, unlocking the barrel bore. Trigger mechanism trigger, single action with safety cocking. The double-sided safety lever is located at the rear of the housing. The shutter stop lever is located on the left side of the frame. The magazine release is located at the base of the trigger guard. Single-row magazine. Sights consist of a front sight and rear sight with the possibility of making lateral corrections, but adjustable micrometric rear sights can also be installed. Various types of optical and collimator sights, laser designators and tactical flashlights. Early production pistols had aluminum alloy frames. Then they began to produce weapons entirely from weapons-grade or stainless steel. Various coating options are used: blue bluing; blue bluing with gilding; chrome plating with a matte and semi-matte surface, as well as polished steel; nickel plating; gilding and a combination of various coatings.

Muzzle flashes when fired from a DE 50 caliber

The Desert Eagle has never been used, much less in service, by special forces or law enforcement agencies in any country in the world. This weapon was not originally designed for combat use. Here are several factors that do not allow this pistol to be used for such purposes: the huge dimensions and very large mass do not allow this weapon to be carried comfortably, much less concealed; it is impossible to quickly remove the gun if necessary; small magazine capacity even when using the smallest caliber cartridge; bullets from cartridges designed for hunting medium and large animals and shooting at long distances, when hitting a person, pass right through, creating great danger damage to third parties; pistols using .44 Magnum and .50 AE cartridges, when firing, create enormous recoil and a very large muzzle flash, which does not allow you to quickly re-aim or aim the weapon at the next target; insufficient operational reliability - delays in shooting due to irregular maintenance; very high cost of ammunition.

Disadvantages of the pistol

One of the biggest problems when shooting from Desert Eagle The 44, and especially the 50 caliber, has extremely high recoil and pop when fired, coupled with a deafening sound. The recoil force of the 50-caliber DE is enormous, but somewhat less than that of large-caliber revolvers using cartridges of similar power, due to the use of automatics and the extension of the recoil impulse over time. If you hold the gun incorrectly, when fired, the spent cartridge will fly straight into the shooter's face. There is no need to talk about the consequences here. In addition, with a weak “grip,” the gun will simply hit the shooter’s head with the barrel. The Desert Eagle is used primarily for sport shooting at long-range silhouette targets and sometimes for short-barreled hunting of medium and even large game, thanks to the spread of revolver hunting in the United States, which has officially existed since the 1930s and is quite popular.

Owner reviews

The owner's impressions of the reliability of the Desert Eagle: “The main disadvantage of the DE is its magazines, the thin jaws of which are severely deformed when the magazine falls on a hard surface, after which the cartridge will no longer sit at the desired angle, which leads to inevitable delays in the form of sticking when feeding. The pistol is very sensitive to the quality of cartridges. For example, there were delays when using cartridges with steel cases, while there were no delays with copper cases. Sometimes the bolt-casing is blocked by the bolt stop, regardless of the number of cartridges remaining in the magazine. Also a very unpleasant moment. No matter how hard I tried, no matter how much I trained, still in 50-100 shots, at least one cartridge case would land in the forehead! Once it landed right in the eye, but, according to safety precautions, I was wearing glasses. If you loosen your grip a little, the trajectory of the cartridge case changes sharply, towards the shooter’s face. The cheeks of the handle seem to be made of very cheap plastic, and hard at that. If your hand is wet or oily, it will slip a lot. And with such a return, it is not very pleasant and quite fraught. Therefore, plastic cheeks must be immediately replaced with rubber ones. To summarize, the main disadvantage of the pistol is its low reliability. Not a single trip with him to the shooting range was complete without at least one delay for one reason or another.”

Popularity in games and movies

The Desert Eagle is very popular in movies and computer games. DE has been seen very often in various action and fantasy films since the mid-1980s. Since 1984 and Year of the Dragon, films in which Desert Eagle has starred have included the Robot Cop trilogy, Predator 2, Eraser, Commando, Alien vs. Predator, Underworld, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and a huge number of lesser known ones. In particular, the Desert Eagle was the service weapon of agents in the famous Matrix trilogy. This popularity is a result of the large size, striking design and large caliber of this "Hand Cannon". Thanks to the same qualities, Desert Eagle is also popular in the computer gaming industry. He is present in such hits as Counter Strike, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Soldier of Fortune, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Jagged Alliance 2, Far Cry, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Xenus, Hitman, Fallout and in many other games where it is used firearms. Let me clarify once again regarding the use of DE as a combat weapon for special forces - this is a myth and nothing more. The DE was and still is a very original sporting and weekend shooting pistol.
