At the beginning of the 19th century, people began to plant trees and shrubs here, not only for reforestation, but also with a very important practical purpose - to consolidate unsteady sand dunes. These two phenomena turned out to be interrelated. There was a need for rocks that could firmly hold the moving soil with their roots. So the Curonian Spit turned into a kind of testing ground for the most promising trees from this point of view. The introduction work was carried out on the basis of one of the oldest forestry districts in East Prussia, created in the 17th century - "Grenz". In a short time, 80 species of tree and shrub species from different parts of the Earth were acclimatized on the Curonian Spit. In the XX century, when the territory was ceded to the Soviet Union, the work was continued by the Curonian forestry enterprise, and since 1987 - by forestry units that are part of the Curonian Spit National Park. 20 species of plants were used to fix the sands, of which the most successful were pines. And today, two-thirds of the forest areas of this unique corner of nature are precisely these conifers, and black pine, as it turned out, adapted better than all other species to difficult conditions - moving sands, salty splashes of sea water and at the same time it tolerates insufficient moisture equally steadfast.

Black pine is a Mediterranean species. It became popular in forestry at the end of the 19th century thanks to the British gardener Charles Lawson, who in 1835 proposed using this tree in landscaping. The plant has a number of advantages: hardy, frost-resistant and decorative, grows quickly. Foresters also had hopes that the tree could be used as material for construction work. But they did not materialize, since the wood of the black pine is less durable than that of its closest relative, the Scots pine, and knotty. The species is quite variable. Eight subspecies are known, which can be conditionally divided into eastern and western. Although both have long needles, up to 16 cm, thick and dense, there are significant differences between them. In the eastern, growing in natural conditions in Austria, Greece, Crimea, Turkey and the Balkans, the needles are strong and tough, as a rule, up to 2 mm thick, do not fall off within 4-7 years. Cells - with very thick cell walls, which gives the leaves special strength. In the western subspecies, whose homeland is considered Italy, Corsica, Spain, the Atlas Mountains of North-West Africa, the needles, on the contrary, are very flexible and thin, from 0.8 to 1.5 mm thick, are replaced every 2-4 years. The eastern subspecies are more frost-hardy and are able to withstand winter colds down to -30 ° С, the western subspecies only up to -20 ° С. In addition, the subspecies also differ in the size and color of the buds, as well as the color of the bark.

Seed productivity in all subspecies is low. Cones ripen for a long time, about 2.5 years. Unripe buds, green and firmly sealed, adorn trees and look very decorative. Gradually they turn brown and after this period they open, and their contents - seeds-nuts - spill out on the ground. Black pine is also popular in central Russia, where it is successfully used in landscape gardening design. The only condition that must be met when growing is to provide her with an open, sunny place in the garden. Gardeners have developed several decorative varieties and forms, one of which is f. dad is compact and short (her height does not exceed 3 m). In general, depending on the growing conditions, this tree reaches up to 30 m, and sometimes more.
