Andrey Shalygin: Reincarnations of AKM and SVD flood not only the Russian market, but are also very popular in Germany and America, creating a market there with a much larger capacity than the domestic one. Whether there is at least something behind this other than the psychological aspect of a child’s “war game” and the “I blinded you from what happened” technique is difficult to say for sure. But the most positive opinion of independent experts sounds something like this: There is an opinion among shooters that AK-moids are only suitable for recreational shooting, not having high accuracy - and they are wrong: although the Kalashnikov system cannot compete in accuracy with an AR-15 or AUG , however, it is in no way inferior to most of the self-loading devices common today. In addition, they are distinguished by their low price and the highest reliability (including with cartridges that other semi-automatic machines cannot “digest” at all). The statement itself is also very controversial, especially about cartridges.

Therefore, let’s not declare everything in unison, but first take a closer look at the situation: Do we all even understand what the Vepr hunting carbine is? I hope it’s no secret to anyone that the Vepr is a 12-caliber smoothbore and a 7.62 mm rifled assault rifle and a Kalashnikov machine gun with both a 39 mm and a 63 mm chamber?

A strange sight, you must agree

I hope no one will deny that automatic military weapon, as well as weapons for single-shot shooting, sniper and hunting, smooth-bore and rifled, for animals and birds, should have OPPOSITE in many respects practical properties, and that making them in one “building” is utter stupidity? Otherwise, snipers would shoot from the hip, bring down a bear with a butt, and hunt a duck with optics and 300WinMag. Okay, let's go in order:

Initially, the Vepr hunting carbines, which are the fruit of conversion production created during the era of the survival of the military industry in the dashing nineties, are self-loading rifled carbines, which were developed on the basis of the 7.62 mm light machine gun RPK in 1995 by a team of designers from the Vyatsko-Polyansky machine-building plant "Molot" (P. M. Mokrushin, V. I. Lyamin, A. I. Kabatchikov, etc.). Designed for commercial and amateur hunting for medium and large animal. Carbines of the Vepr series are produced at the Vyatsko-Polyansky machine-building plant Molot.

In those days there was no question of how to do good hunting weapon. The question was - how to minimal costs rebuild production to produce liquid products that can feed this very production and allow the work team to survive in the absence of purchases from the Ministry of Defense and foreign orders.

While creating hunting rifle"Vepr" makes maximum use of components and parts of the Kalashnikov light machine gun (RPK), which is produced in Vyatskie Polyany. The carbine inherited from the machine gun a powerful receiver, a heavy barrel, and a rear sight with a mechanism for introducing lateral corrections. The changes affected mainly the retention elements (stock and fore-end) and trigger. The self-timer was excluded from the design of the trigger, in order to prevent firing in bursts, the shape and dimensions of the sear and trigger were changed. The butt is made of orthopedic, "Dragunov" type, with a rubber butt pad. The forend is of a civilian type, without a protective lining on top, and is much longer in length compared to the combat type. The height of the butt comb makes it equally convenient to use both mechanical and optical sight s.

According to the plant: A comfortable stock and excellent balance are the undoubted advantages of the carbine. The heavy and long (520 or 590 mm) barrel, made by cold forging, has a chrome-plated bore and provides excellent shooting accuracy. This characteristic is also positively influenced by a powerful receiver. long length sighting line provides high accuracy shooting with a mechanical sight. The sighting bar of the Vepr series carbines allows for effective shooting at a distance of up to 300 m.

But many gunsmiths do not agree with this opinion, for example, Walter Wolf from Ukraine completely disagrees with the opinion of the plant: Nand the example of the “Vepr”, caliber .223, which is well known to me - In fact, this is the same Kalashnikov assault rifle. I won’t say that the metal is thicker on the bolt box. No, the parameters are the same as on the AKM. Its trunk has longitudinal valleys - stiffening ribs. .223 caliber cartridge. There is no longer a locking button on the return mechanism like on the Saiga-12k. But two protrusions in the upper part of the return mechanism prevent the cover from falling off when firing. The front sight is no longer a Kalashnikov one. The front sight base post is stretched. But the butt on this carbine cancels out everything that a hunter could still put up with. As I already said, it is orthopedic, but very heavy. At the end, as expected, there is a rubber shock absorber. However, its main problem is that no matter how you aim, the upper ridge of the butt simply crashes into the cheekbone, and at the moment of the shot, all the vibration of the butt is painfully transmitted to the cheekbone. The result is black eyes, swollen cheekbones and poor shooting performance. The problem is that the Vepr stock does not have a side release. By the way, the Saiga-308 carbines and other similar models have the same problem. Even if a hunting stock is installed on the model, it still does not have a side outlet. I don’t understand, is it really possible that no one took aim at the factory and doesn’t know about such imperfections? Its long trigger stroke is also inconvenient for hunting, which is generally extremely undesirable for rifled weapons. A very ugly, sharp trigger guard, as if it was not made at the factory, but was riveted by a drunk guy in a garage. Moreover, it should be especially noted that for some reason the prices for these weapons are far from low. What to pay for? For machine stamping of the box, rivets and spot welding? And what’s interesting is that double-barreled shotguns are much cheaper than this crude stamping. Where is the logic here? After all, in fact, such a stamped “Vepr” or “Saiga” should cost much less than double-barreled guns, since manual labor Very little is spent on them.

"Vepr" can be equipped with an optical sight at the factory. Usually this is 4x optics from the Vologda or Vileika optical plants. If you want to install another sight on your carbine, then buy a weapon without optics - it’s cheaper. The optics mount on the Vepr is lateral, the same as on the AK. When zeroing an optical sight on a separately purchased bracket, do not forget that the parts of the bracket, after rough alignment, are fixed relative to each other with four pins. Otherwise, after several shots, the aiming point will definitely “float away”.

Vepris with mechanical and optical (if included) sights leave the factory adjusted to normal combat at a range of 100 m.

Design of the Vepr hunting carbine

Vepr carbines are produced for cartridges 7.62×39 mm, 7.62×51 mm NATO (.308 Winchester), 5.56×45 mm NATO (.223 Remington), 7.62×54 mm R, 7, 62x63 mm in several different modifications and designs. The weapon's automation is built according to the Kalashnikov assault rifle design, has a high degree of reliability and is trouble-free when working in different conditions operation.

Automatic reloading of the carbine is carried out by using the energy of the powder gases removed from the barrel bore into the gas chamber when fired, and the energy of the return spring. To increase durability, the barrel bore and chamber of the carbine are chrome-plated; to reduce the flash of flame when fired, a permanent flash suppressor is installed on the muzzle of the barrel.

To eliminate possible inertial pinching of the primer on imported cartridges, the bolt striker is spring-loaded. To increase safety, the Vepr series carbines are equipped with a flag-type safety lock. The stock is combined, with a pistol grip. A rubber butt pad-shock absorber is installed on the butt to reduce recoil.

Details incomplete disassembly carbine "Vepr".

In order to ensure maximum safety in handling weapons since 1997 All carbines supplied for export, and some intended for the domestic market, are equipped with a spring-loaded striker. The fact is that the cartridges foreign production have a primer that is much more sensitive than that of Russian ammunition, which can lead to its inertial puncture when the cartridge is chambered when the bolt is not fully closed (as a result, damage to the weapon and injury to the shooter).

While Russia traditionally uses domestic ammunition, our hunters do not face such a problem, but Imported cartridges will sooner or later raise the issue head on in front of weapons factories. The designers of Molot took care of this ahead of time.

The butt part of the Vepr also causes numerous complaints from gunsmiths. For example, the opinion of the same Wolf: I would also like to mention the shops. On Vepr 223 it is plastic. This plastic is called heavy-duty polyamide. What it is? Polyamide (amidoplast) in its pure form is colorless, but can be easily painted in any color. Fibers are made from it - nylon, nylon, and recently they have been stamping water taps, gears, and bushings for load-bearing units. At a temperature of 215°C it melts. Just think, if the bolt with its rammer pierces the feeder and erases the step on it that ensures the staggered arrangement of the cartridges, then you can safely throw the magazine in a landfill, since when the step-protrusion is erased, two cartridges from the magazine will go into the chamber. This disease is also inherent in Kalashnikov assault rifles (AKS-74). As long as there were stores with metal feeders, there were no such problems. But as soon as they appeared from “heavy-duty” polyamide, after some time of operation the shutter of the machine gun stopped, firing two cartridges at the same time. The reason is a worn feeder protrusion. This is the kind of trouble that will happen to boars 222-223. Pay attention to the photo of the Boar. How much stupid wood is left on the butt! And the hunter will have to carry this dead weight on himself. When reading an advertisement about the Vepr, do not believe that it has a comfortable butt, as it is written in its booklet. Current followers of once famous Russian gunsmiths have long since retrained themselves as nimble PR specialists, skillfully mixing truth with lies, and our hunters are forced to sip this brew and make up for all their sins themselves.

Options and modifications of the Vepr hunting carbine

  • SOK-94 "Vepr"- the first model of 1995 chambered for 7.62x39 mm. It is in service with the paramilitary and guard units of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Security" of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia;
  • SOK-95 "Vepr-308"- second model, chambered for 7.62x51 mm;
  • "Vepr-Super"— the third model of 1998, available in several versions:
  • SOK-95 M "Vepr-308 Super" And SOK-95 MS "Vepr-Super-Sport"(discontinued) chambered for 7.62x51 mm;
  • SOK-35 "Vepr-35 Super" chambered for .35 Remington (discontinued)
  • SOK-94R "Vepr-Pioneer"— produced since 2000

  • "Vepr-223"

Vepr rifled hunting carbines

The model chambered for 7.62x39 has been produced since 1995 and is extremely unified with the RPK. Almost everything distinctive features designs mentioned above.

In the Vepr308 carbine, the locking unit has been strengthened, the bolt has three lugs, and the gas vent unit has been improved. The use of the .308 Win cartridge brought the Vepr very close in power to the Tiger carbine chambered for 7.62x54. According to CIP data, the energy of a bullet fired from a Vepr308 carbine on a target at distances of 100 and 300 meters is only 10% less than that of a bullet fired from a Tiger.

Surely some owners of the Vepr308 carbines of the first releases were faced with the problem of selecting ammunition for their weapons. The fact is that the 7.62x51 cartridges, produced until the mid-90s in our country, had a total length of 72 mm, while the 7.62x51M cartridge, for which the Vepr was developed, has a slightly shorter length. Because of this, filling the magazine with such cartridges and sending them into the chamber was difficult. A modified 7.62x51M cartridge (.308 Winchester) or a foreign-made cartridge that fully meets the requirements of the Vepr developers became available to hunters in remote regions of Russia relatively recently. Since 1997, magazines with a capacity of 5, 7 and 10 rounds for the Vepr 308 can be equipped with any of the above-mentioned cartridges.

In 2000, three more modifications of the “Vepry” appeared chambered for 5.56x45 (.223 Remington), 5.45x39 and .35 Remington caliber cartridges.

Smoothbore hunting carbines Vepr - Vepr-12 Molot

Smoothbore self-loading hunting carbine "Vepr-12 Molot"

"Vepr - 12 Molot" - multi-purpose smoothbore self-loading carbine, intended for hunting, sports competitions, self-defense, as well as use as a service weapon. It differs from other versions by the presence of a removable flash suppressor mounted on the muzzle of the barrel and a trigger locking mechanism, which eliminates the possibility of firing with the butt folded.

Carbine "Vepr - 12 Hammer" isp. 01 is a modification of the Vepr-12 Molot carbine and is distinguished by a barrel extended to 520 mm, a non-removable flash suppressor, and the ability to fire with the butt folded.

Carbine "Vepr - 12 Hammer" used. 02 is a modification of the Vepr - 12 Molot-01 carbine and is distinguished by a barrel extended to 680 mm and the presence of a base in the muzzle of the barrel for installing internal muzzle bushings, unified with guns of the Bekas and Bekas - Auto series.

Specifications:

The smoothbore version of the Vepr may have approximately the following set of attachments:

Images enlarge when clicked. In the photo from top to bottom:
1. The carabiner is equipped with a long choke attachment, with thread, with an installed DTK,
2. long pay,
3. long paradox,
4. long Paradox from Saiga 12 (also with thread for DTK)
4. short choke,
5. short pay,
6. trimmed, to maintain the narrowing 0.5 pay from Saiga.
7. protective nut on the barrel thread,
8. standard flash suppressor for the Vepr 12 carbine.

In fact, this number of interchangeable choke tubes for a given rifle is more a product of marketing than any necessity. For the most part, attachments are a kind of psychological factor, akin to lengthening the penis of savages with wooden sheaths. The one with the longer barrel is cooler.

Real combat properties of this weapon are such that all the abundance of attachments cannot in any way affect the practical result. Short chokes produce mediocre talus. Paradoxes can be used to reduce the cost of a shot.

Private gunsmiths and companies, especially in Germany and America, are intensively producing various tuned models in tactical versions from standard Veprs - another area of application for Veprs in the field of entertainment for men.

Carbines, of course, are somewhat different from each other, but first we will talk about the Vepr system itself, and then we will dwell on the features of the different options.

When creating the Vepr hunting carbine, maximum use was made of components and parts of the Kalashnikov light machine gun (RPK), which is produced in Vyatskie Polyany. Many Russian hunters have long been using the products of a machine-building plant called “Molot”. Three-line and self-loading shotguns from the “Bekas” series, Simonov hunting rifles, smooth-bore, as well as semi-automatic rifled models from the “Vepr” line - all these are the brainchild of the plant located in Vyatskie Polyany. One of the first samples he released was the Vepr-308 carbine, the price of which depends on the design.

History of creation

2010 marked seven decades since the founding of the Molot machine-building plant. It was created during the Great Patriotic War for the mass production of Shpagin submachine guns - PPSh. In peacetime, in parallel with weapons, other products came out of the machines, from washing machines to skates.

With the onset of the nineties of the last century, Soviet industry began to decline. Did not escape this fate and defense industry. Therefore, in order to survive, “Molot” switched to large-scale production of weapons for hunting. The Ministry of Defense has reduced its orders for rifle models. And therefore, arms factories had to adapt their production lines, which produced military products, to civilian products. Izhmash was the first to decide on this, followed by the one located in Kirov region"Hammer". Taking the famous AK as a basis, the designers created their own model - a self-loading carbine that fires a cartridge of the same size. The model was named “Vepr”.

Already in 1994, Russian hunters had a chance to get acquainted with a new gun, manufactured initially for the 7.62x39 cartridge, and a little later - for the .308Win cartridge. Over time, it began to be produced in various calibers and designs.

general information

The first Vepr-308 was as similar as possible to the RPK. Only changed firing mechanism, in which the self-timer was eliminated, and new forms of the trigger, sear and retention elements were designed. The Vepr-308 carbine has a long fore-end without a top pad and an orthopedic butt.

Its barrel bore is chrome plated. It is made by cold forging. The Vepr-308 carbines have a strengthened locking unit and a slightly modified gas exhaust unit. Thanks to its long barrel, as well as a receiver made of one and a half millimeter thick, and reliable locking, the Vepr-308 is as close as possible to its main competitor, the Izhevsk Tiger.

Specifications

Fans most often choose the Vepr-308 carbine, the price of which starts at twenty-three thousand rubles. It is usually used in driven hunting, which takes place from a number or from an ambush. The reason is that the dimensions and weight of the Vepr-308 carbine make running shooting somewhat difficult. He has no problems with accuracy. Experienced hunters shoot well with it even at a distance of about three hundred meters.

The magazine of this carbine is box-shaped, removable, designed for seven or ten rounds. Vepr-308 weighs about 4.1 kilograms with a length of one thousand two hundred millimeters. When compared with analogues, the Tiger, for example, is a little shorter - ten centimeters.

The initial speed of the bullet is 830 m/sec. The discrepancy when firing domestically produced cartridges from one hundred meters is no more than seven centimeters.

Advantages

Like many domestic shotguns, the entire line of this carbine, including one of best models- “Vepr-308 Super” is reliable and unpretentious both in maintenance and operation. It is perfect for both fishermen and hobbyists. It has a lot of advantages, including the fact that the Vepr-308, the price of which is somewhat high compared to analogues from other manufacturers, is as similar in components and parts to a light machine gun as possible. From his prototype, he inherited a powerful box and the barrel itself, which is quite heavy, and a rear sight with an insertion mechanism for lateral corrections.

The butt of the Vepr-308 Super carbine is of the orthopedic “Dragunov” type with a rubber butt pad. Thanks to the height of the comb, it is possible to use both mechanical and optical types of sights equally well.

Performances

These carabiners are available in several versions. The first was the SOK-94 model, produced under 7.62×39 cartridges. It is still used today in the paramilitary and guard units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The second model SOK-95 “Vepr-308”, the price of which on sale starts from twenty-seven thousand rubles depending on the configuration, was produced under the 7.62×51 cartridge. It is still quite popular among hunters today.

Many models were discontinued, for example, SOK-95 MS "Vepr-Super-Sport". Today, only one version from this line is produced. This is SOK-95 M “Vepr-308 Super”, the price of which starts from thirty-one and a half thousand rubles.

Judging by the reviews, this hunting rifle has good balance and a silent safety. It is trouble-free, but most importantly, it is lighter than its predecessors. Apparently, this is why today many hunters choose this particular carbine.

"Vepr-308 Super"

Unlike the previous ones, this version has a number of significant features. For the first time, instead of a forearm and butt, it features a solid stock made of beech or walnut. This greatly changed the carbine, which turned out to be more aesthetically pleasing and streamlined, combining good ergonomic characteristics.

The new model has become more convenient both in handling and transportation. At the same time, it has increased rigidity in the barrel-box system. This is an important factor, since even a one and a half millimeter magazine box chambered for the 7.62x51 cartridge does not provide the desired performance. At the same time, a partial increase in the mass of the butt is compensated by a decrease in the weight of some parts.

In addition, the Vepr-308 Super, the price of which starts at thirty-three thousand rubles, is made with a more powerful barrel, which made it possible to reduce vibrations when shooting and improve accuracy.

Equipment

The practice of hunting with this weapon has shown that the overwhelming majority of hunters use it. Based on this circumstance, the designers made some changes. They reduced the aiming line and moved the front sight block to the gas chamber. This was enough for shooting at a distance of three hundred meters and increasing the viewing angle.
