"Vepr" - a family of smoothbore and rifled self-loading carbines, created on the basis of the 7.62-mm Kalashnikov light machine gun (RPK) at the Vyatsko-Polyansky machine-building plant "Molot". They are still produced at this company to this day. The first gun of this family was developed in 1995. The Vepr carbines appeared because the military industry needed to survive in the nineties. It was necessary, with minimal effort, to rebuild the production facilities, which were left without orders from the Ministry of Defense and foreign clients, to produce civilian products.

"Vepr" is the closest competitor to the Saiga series rifles. These carbines are positioned as weapons for hunting medium and large animal. They are also used for self-defense and competitive sports and as a service weapon.

Design

The Vepr carbine makes maximum use of parts and components of the Kalashnikov light machine gun. The carbine is automatically reloaded using the energy of the powder gases, which are diverted from the barrel at the moment of firing into the gas chamber, as well as using the energy of the return spring.

The main differences between the Vepr and the RPK are in the design of the butt and trigger mechanism. The carbines are equipped with orthopedic butts of the “Dragunov type”. The self-timer, which allows firing in bursts, is excluded from the trigger mechanism. Another feature of the “Vepr” is the forend, which is much longer than that of the RPK, without a protective lining in the upper part.

The bore and chamber are chrome-plated, which increases their service life. A non-removable flash suppressor is installed on the muzzle, which reduces the flash when fired. The fuse is a flag type. Open sight allows you to conduct targeted shooting at distances up to 300-350 meters. The Vepr hunting rifle can also be equipped with an optical sight. The carabiner is designed for use at temperatures from -50 to +50 degrees.

All Vepris intended for export, as well as some versions for Russian market equipped with a spring-loaded drummer. It is needed so that the cartridges can be used safely foreign production, which have more sensitive capsules than Russian ones. As a result, in a carbine with a non-spring striker, when the bolt is not completely closed, inertial puncture of such ammunition may occur while it is being chambered. The result is damage to the weapon and injury to the shooter. When using domestically produced cartridges there is no such problem.

Operating principle of Vepr carbines:

  1. When the return spring moves the bolt carrier and bolt forward, the cartridge is sent from the magazine into the chamber.
  2. As the bolt rotates, the barrel bore is locked, the hammer engages the trigger, and the ejector slides over the rim of the cartridge case.
  3. When you press the trigger, the trigger is released from it, and then hits the firing pin, driven by the mainspring, and a shot occurs.
  4. The carbine is automatically reloaded.

Carbine modifications

  • SOK-94 “Vepr” is the very first version of the carbine, which appeared in 1995. The gun is designed to fire 7.62x39 mm cartridges;
  • SOK-95 "Vepr-308" - the second modification of the "Vepr", designed for 7.62x51 mm cartridges;
  • “Vepr-Super” is the third version of the carbine, which appeared in 1998. It was produced in three versions: SOK-35 “Vepr-35 Super” for .35 Remington ammunition, SOK-95MS “Vepr-Super-Sport” for 7.62×51 mm cartridges, SOK 95M “Vepr-308-Super” for ammunition 7.62×51 mm. The first two versions have already been discontinued;
  • SOK-94R "Vepr-Pioneer" - production of this version began in 2000;
  • SOK-98 "Vepr-5.45" - hunting carbine "Vepr" in the export version, designed to use 5.45x39 mm ammunition;
  • "Vepr-Hunter" - available in two versions for firing 7.62x51 mm and 7.62x63 mm cartridges;
  • "Vepr-1V" - version chambered for 5.56x45 mm cartridges;
  • VPO-133 “Vepr-K” - a converted AK without the ability to fire automatically;
  • VPO-136 "Vepr-KM" - a converted AKM without automatic fire;
  • "Vepr-223" - for firing 5.56x45 mm cartridges;
  • KO-SOK-243 “Vepr-243” – carbine chambered for 6.2 x 52 mm (.243 Win);
  • VPO-205 “Vepr-12 Hammer” is a 12-gauge smoothbore carbine (for 12x76 mm ammunition).

Popular models and their characteristics

This smoothbore carbine is available in three versions: “Vepr-12 Molot”, “Vepr-12 Molot” isp. 01, "Vepr-12 Hammer" isp. 02.

A removable flash suppressor is installed on the muzzle of the barrel, which distinguishes the Vepr-12 from other modifications. The carbine has a trigger locking mechanism that prevents shooting with the butt folded. “Vepr-12 Molot-01” is a version that has a barrel increased to 520 mm and a non-removable flash suppressor. It is possible to fire with the stock folded. "Vepr-12 Molot-02" is a smooth-bore carbine with a barrel length of 680 mm. In the muzzle of the barrel there is a base for installing internal muzzle bushings.

"Vepr-308"

Rifled carbine "Vepr" of 7.62 mm caliber, designed for use of .308 Win cartridges. In terms of power, it is only slightly inferior to the Tiger carbine, with which 7.62x54 ammunition is used. The initial bullet speed is 830 m/s.

The barrel length of this version of the Vepr can be 520 or 590 mm. The carbine is equipped with a magazine with a capacity of 7 or 10 rounds. Maximum weight without optical sight and other additional accessories - 4.05 kg.

Another rifled carbine chambered for .308 Win (7.62×51 mm), included in the lineup"Boar". With a total body length of 1000 mm, it has a barrel length of 625 mm. Weight is 4.69 kg.

Advantages

  • the “Vepr” automatic system, created on the basis of a Kalashnikov assault rifle, is very reliable and works flawlessly in any operating conditions;
  • The layout of the "Vepr" is such that when shooting from it it is convenient to use both a mechanical and an optical sight. Mechanics can be used with installed optics;
  • high accuracy of fire;
  • long service life of all mechanism parts;
  • Stable operation in difficult weather conditions.

Flaws

Some modifications of the "Vepr" are equipped with polyamide (that is, plastic) magazines. During operation, the bolt rammer can tear through the feeder. If the step that staggers the rounds wears out, two rounds will be chambered at a time instead of one. In this case, the store will become unusable. The same problem is observed with Kalashnikov AKS-74 assault rifles.

The wooden butts of many Vepr models, which can be called unreasonably voluminous, cause criticism. They have a large number of“extra” wood, which weighs down the carbine, but does not give anything to the hunter. At all heavy weight, as well as large dimensions, are typical for all versions of “Veprey”.

But positive aspects These guns still have more, so they are popular and invariably find their buyers.

Precautionary measures

When working with the Vepr carbine, you must remember the following safety precautions:

  • before each loading of the carbine, check for foreign objects in the bore and chamber;
  • To ensure that there are no rounds in the chamber or magazine, the bolt carrier must be pulled back. This must be done every time you pick up a gun;
  • Do not point either loaded or unloaded weapons at people or pets. When shooting, you need to take into account that the bullet’s flight range is 3 km;
  • after a misfire, do not open the shutter for 5 seconds, as there is a possibility of a prolonged shot;
  • always put the rifle on safety in a timely manner to avoid an accidental shot;
  • Store ammunition and carbine separately out of the reach of children and unauthorized persons.

The Vepr carbine should always be inspected, cleaned and lubricated on time when disassembling and assembling the gun in in the right order according to instructions. In this case, it will last a long time, delighting you with stable operation, and hunting with a carbine will bring only positive emotions.

Carbine Vepr-Hunter 308 VPO-101M L=550mm (photo)

The "Vepr" carbine is produced at the Vyatsko-Polyansky machine-building plant "Molot" in three versions: "Vepr" itself chambered for 7.62x39 cartridge, "Vepr-308" chambered for .308 Winchester (7.62x51M) and "Vepr-223" chambered for .223 Remington (5.56x45). Carbines, of course, are somewhat different from each other, but first we will talk about the Vepr system itself, and then we will dwell on the features of the different options.

Adjustable rear sight, inherited from the Vepr machine gun,
allows an experienced shooter to correct for wind
when shooting at long distances

When creating the Vepr hunting carbine, components and parts were used to the maximum light machine gun Kalashnikov (RPK), which is produced in Vyatskie Polyany. The carbine inherited from the machine gun a powerful receiver, a heavy barrel, and a rear sight with a mechanism for introducing lateral corrections. The changes affected mainly the retention elements (stock and fore-end) and trigger. The self-timer was excluded from the design of the trigger, in order to prevent firing in bursts, the shape and dimensions of the sear and trigger were changed. The butt is made of orthopedic, “Dragunov” type, with a rubber butt pad. The forend is of a civilian type, without a protective lining on top, and is much longer in length compared to the combat type. The height of the butt comb makes it equally convenient to use both mechanical and optical sights.

A comfortable stock and excellent balance are the undoubted advantages of the carbine. The heavy and long (520 or 590 mm) barrel, made by cold forging, has a chrome-plated bore and provides excellent shooting accuracy. This characteristic is also positively influenced by a powerful receiver.

The long sighting line provides high accuracy shooting with a mechanical sight.

"Vepr" can be equipped with an optical sight at the factory. Usually this is 4x optics from the Vologda or Vileika optical plants. If you want to install another sight on your carbine, then buy a weapon without optics - it’s cheaper. The optics mount on the Vepr is lateral, the same as on the AK. When zeroing an optical sight on a separately purchased bracket, do not forget that the parts of the bracket, after rough alignment, are fixed relative to each other with four pins. Otherwise, after several shots, the aiming point will definitely “float away”.

Vepris with mechanical and optical (if included) sights leave the factory adjusted to normal combat at a range of 100 m.

In order to ensure maximum safety in handling weapons, since 1997, all carbines supplied for export, and a certain number intended for the domestic market, are equipped with a spring-loaded firing pin. The fact is that foreign-made cartridges have a primer that is much more sensitive than that of Russian ammunition, which can lead to its inertial puncture when the cartridge is chambered when the bolt is not completely closed (as a result, damage to the weapon and injury to the shooter). While domestic ammunition is traditionally used in Russia, our hunters do not face such a problem, but imported cartridges that appear on sale will sooner or later raise the issue head-on with arms factories. The designers of Molot took care of this ahead of time.

Now about the differences in the design of “Vepray” for various cartridges.

The model chambered for 7.62x39 has been produced since 1995 and is extremely unified with the RPK. Almost everything distinctive features designs mentioned above.

In the Vepr-308 carbine, the locking unit has been strengthened, the bolt has three lugs, and the gas vent unit has been improved. The use of the .308 Win cartridge brought the Vepr very close in power to the Tiger carbine chambered for 7.62x54. According to CIP data, the energy of a bullet fired from a Vepr-308 carbine on a target at distances of 100 and 300 meters is only 10% less than that of a bullet fired from a Tiger.

Surely some owners of the Vepr-308 carbines of the first releases were faced with the problem of selecting ammunition for their weapons. The fact is that the 7.62x51 cartridges, produced in our country until the mid-90s, had a total length of 72 mm, while the 7.62x51M cartridge, for which the Vepr was developed, has a slightly shorter length. Because of this, filling the magazine with such cartridges and sending them into the chamber was difficult. A modified 7.62x51M cartridge (.308 Winchester) or a foreign-made cartridge that fully meets the requirements of the Vepr developers became available to hunters in remote regions of Russia relatively recently. Since 1997, magazines with a capacity of 5, 7 and 10 rounds for the Vepr 308 can be equipped with any of the above-mentioned cartridges.

In 2000, three more modifications of the Vepreya appeared chambered for 5.56x45 (.223 Remington), 5.45x39 and .35 Remington caliber cartridges. They are among the latest Hammer products.
