The scale of modern world book publishing

In the past century, the volume of publishing book products in the world has constantly increased, and the rate of increasing production remains quite high and resilient.

The world book publishing has a developed publishing system, which currently has almost 500 thousand publishing houses and other organizations that are close to the content of the function. About a quarter of them are in the United States. The United Kingdom (about 60 thousand), France (about 25 thousand), Germany (about 20 thousand), Japan (more than 20 thousand), and others, and others are distinguished by major publishing systems (about 20 thousand). The world publishing system is different; but also high growth dynamics. Over the past 10 years, the number of publishers has increased more than three times. Such an increase in publishing structures is primarily based on the inclusion of secondary and especially small enterprises in this sphere, along with each country there are giants associations that produce lion's share of products.

The involvement of all new organizations in the publishing case led to the fact that, as mentioned above, the UNESCO Statistical Service has exhausted its capabilities of reliable accounting of products. Since 1991, publishing in the Statistics Statist "UNESCO STATISTICAL YEARBOOK" of the Publishing Activities in the World has ceased. Currently, information is published in the collection only for individual countries, and even then with a large delay. The only cumulative source of obtaining information about the situation in the global book publishing of the 90s is the data of the website of the International Association of Publishers, prepared on the basis of materials provided to the headquarters of MAI by National Publishing Associations.

Based on this data, as well as using other sources (periodic printing, materials of book exhibitions and fairs, etc.), it is possible to determine the ranking of countries included in the top ten leaders of world book publishing. Due to the fact that the statistical information on the book issue is formed on the basis of various methods and have an unequal degree of reliability, we considered it possible to take into account the characteristics that determine the level of book release achieved in a particular country around which the changing year range from year indicators.

Table 1

Leaders of world book publishing in 2000 (by alphabet)

No. p / p Country The number of issued names, thousands
1 Brazil 50
2 Great Britain 120
3 Germany 80
4 Italy 50
5 Spain 60
6 People's Republic of China 140
7 the Russian Federation 60
8 USA 70
9 France 50
10 Japan 70

The data shown in Table 1 can serve as a basis for trying to calculate the approximate amount of the book release in 2000. We use the methodology for this purpose that we have already applied with the definition of predictive indicators of book publishing. This technique is based that the total volume of world book publishing in a certain proportion is correlated with the volume of books and brochures in the countries of the first dozen in the ranking of the participants of the Global Publishing Process. For example, in 1990, in the States that have made the first ten (according to the MAI rating, taking into account the comments previously expressed), the issue was about 60% of the total book production in the world (by the number of titles). If we assume that in the future, the share of the first dozen was the same, then we obtained that by the end of 2000, about 1250 thousand names of books and brochures was released in the world. It should be taken into account how repeatedly noted that the system of statistical accounting of the results of publishing activities in many countries is far from perfection for a variety of reasons. Therefore, the data that is published even in official sources is not reflected with the thorough accuracy of the true state of affairs. The characteristics substantiated by the author make it possible to judge the developing trends and proportions and can be used to form state policies in the book. On these grounds, you can imagine the following picture of the development of global book production in the second half of the XX century.

Notes:

Data 1955-1990 The UNESCO Statistic Yearbook (UNESCO Statistic Yearbook) for the relevant years is given.

The proportions of the release of books and brochures in continents and regions in 2000 are calculated by the analogy since 1990.

Until 1990, Europe data includes books and brochures in the former USSR.

If we estimate the state of the world book publishing in general, it can be said that at the turn of the millennium, a very reliable foundation has been created for further movement forward. Despite the rapid development, new information and communication technologies, the book remains among the most preferred ways to obtain the person necessary knowledge and in the modern information era of the third millennium.

Indicators of global book release are determined by the very high pace of book production in the last decade of the last century. The number of books and brochures in 1970 compared to 1960, yes 60% increased in 1980, in 1980 compared with 1970 - by 37%, in 1990 compared with 1980, 18%. This means that for several decades the growth rate of books and brochures constantly declined. However, in 1991-2000. The picture of the dynamics of the book release changed dramatically. If in the 80s the growth rate did not reach 20%, then only for the first half of the 90s it was already at the level of 25%, and in just the last decade, global book production increased by almost 50%, while the growth went from quite high Basic level (1990 - 842 thousand titles).

Book publishing in the USA

Analysis of publishing activities. Main trends and features

Book publishing in America is a fairly common type of entrepreneurial activity. One of the main reasons for this is simplicity in the organization - it does not require a license to implement it. In this regard, more than 3 thousand different publishers work in the United States and only 20 of them are quite large. "In the US publishing business, there are constants - mergers and acquisitions, i.e. a tendency to form large transnational corporations. From large publishers specializing in educational and business literature, the most famous McGraw Hill, John Wiley and Sons, Thomson, PEARSON Education (giant, arising after numerous mergers, including Irwin, Longman, Simon and Schuster, Prentice Hall, etc.). " Moreover, there are a number of university publishers specializing in the publication of scientific papers of teachers and specialists leading research at universities. They are combined into the University Publishing Association, which we will tell below. The specialization of the publisher may also be the creation of reference books, encyclopedias on the most diverse subjects. The object of publishing activities may be narrow-professional literature, calculated only on specialists.

The main trends of the US book market can be attributed to strengthening the share of national network bookstores, such as Barnes and Noble, each of which has a thousand and more shops, and smaller - Emilia, Crown. Recently, the purchase of books by so-called warehouse stores (Warehouse Clubs), which get a big discipation has been greatly distributed. The share of the book market is distributed as follows: "40% of the books of books fall on clubs, online trade, warehouses clubs, 20% are independent stores and 40% - on large nationwide books. Every year about 25 million books are sold annually in the USA. The number of books published in the United States by the authors themselves without the help of publishing houses (Self-Published Books) has grown almost 4 times over the past six years (by 287%). In 2011, the number of such editions, including e-books, reached 235625, reported the Bucker's bubiographic company (Bowker).

One of the most important features of the US bookship is computerization both in the system of marketing and promotion of books and for their production. Huge importance is attached to the creation and design of the organization's website. There are whole companies that, with the help of a competent design of a Web-page, significantly accelerate the implementation of book products, strengthen the company's position in the market and its positive relationship with the local community and investors. With the help of the electronic page of the company, funds are also involved in the development of the company and the implementation of innovative projects.

Thanks to the above, sales of books via the Internet are rapidly increasing. The most popular website for the sale of books and not only is Amazon, COM, known worldwide. Despite this, the electronic sales of books still does not bring the expected profit, since the amount of investment in the organization of electronic commerce is very large. For 2013, the volume of electronic books of books reaches 50 thousand copies, but only two or three bestseller showed a truly large amount of sales. According to experts, only after 40 years the electronic sales of books in success will be compared with traditional shops and paper form of books, so this area is still in development.

It should be noted that for 2013, 2674 publishers work in the United States, of which 122 in New York.

In addition to the Internet sites selling traditional books, for American book publishing is characterized by selling electronic versions of books that can be downloaded to the client's computer after billing. E-Book Reader also developed - portable electronic digital devices where multiple e-books can be downloaded. With a not particularly high price of readers, the e-books themselves in many cases are not cheaper than traditional, therefore, according to specialists, in the near future, the electronic books are not expected to fully displacing paper versions.

Another characteristic feature of the United States's book case is the eternal competition between independent and network bookstores. According to the journalists Publisher "S Weekly, this confrontation will not lead to full displacement of independent stores from the book market. Independent bookstores are needed by the American book market; they are usually managed by literary critics, devotees, enthusiasts who often reveal unknown young authors. Large Network companies are often focused on demand for independent stores - if they buy in an independent store, then in the network it will be well sold. Read more Network and independent bookstores We will analyze in the second chapter of our exchange rate work.

Business-to-Business Companies

Other features of the modern development of publishing business in the United States can also be attributed to companies providing services to corporate clients (Business-to-Business Companies). Their work is to develop marketing strategies, the choice of communication tools for the company, the development of Web-pages, the construction of the image and brand. One of such companies paying special attention to the use of various communications, including electronic, is Metropolitan Group (MG). This company offers electronic marketing, electronic PR, electronic book promotion. Its main task is to create web pages of companies that would revive the interest in the customer company, helped her strengthen positions in the market and properly build relationships with strategic partners and stakeholders.

The basis of such a company is the integrated approach to the problem of marketing. The customer company referring to MG must submit basic data about himself and its activities. Work often begins with the wording of the mission, then determine what the company is represented by its goal, its audience, as it segmented, and for each segment there is its own strategy for using electronic communications. Getting Started by the development of such a strategy, Metropolitan Group responds to three questions:

· What? (What is this company, what goals do she pursue?);

· SO What? (What follows from this?);

· NOW What? (What now? How can this be concerned that you can offer us?)

One of the important areas as part of the company's marketing is PR-activities (Public Relations). The work of MG in this case are, first of all, in the careful construction of the Customer's company's brand, including its visual perception (company logo, color, form, feed methods). The main goal of PR is to involve interested persons in a dialogue with the company, to interest them, notify the target audience about future social events using various communication methods.

Special place the company pays for the preparation of soil for the customer's partnership with interested parties. An example of such a successful partnership is the long-term relationship between Barnes and Noble and the famous New York Times newspaper.

Market marketing

In the US Book System, the essentially narrow-professional special publishers. For example, in the city of Portland (Oregon) Publisher Robert McGock, a lawyer for education, publishes books for lawyers. It is not for sale, and the main method of its distribution and marketing is mailing. The first edition of McGahi was the collection "101 Corporate Forms" (typical corporate contract). In the US, more than 1 million lawyers, of which 150 thousand specialize in corporate law. The work of McGahi began with sending an advertising brochure to lawyers specializing in corporate law. Those who are responsible for the book and check for her payment, some part of them pays the check, paying for mainly the cost of producing books and marketing. Lawyers also offer books on a metal spring (on rings), in which you can insert new pages with information, weekly sent by mail wishing.

Another deserving idea of \u200b\u200bRobert has become a book-guide to the care of newborns. Advertising information about this edition could be found in the baby food store, and if the book is to put a trademark of a children's store, it can become effective marketing that is beneficial for both sides.

One of the methods of promoting books is also a presentation of the book by the author in a large bookstore, often accompanied by free distribution of copies, which attracts buyers and provides a public response to the author, as information about this event is reflected in the store's bulletin and local media. Another way to promote publications is to appeal to numerous literary agencies for all US. Moreover, such agencies often issue an advance author in the amount of $ 200 as aid in the publishing book.

In the field of fiction, it is customary to work with literary agencies representing the interests of the authors. It should be emphasized that in the US, the Institute of Literary Agencies is developed much more than in Europe. Such agencies work very actively, sometimes offering the publication of the author's work to several publishers on a competitive basis.

The simmental screening of the novel can attract a lot of romantically tuned spectators in this weekend, but the Roman himself failed in trying to keep the sympathies of visitors to British libraries. The book is no longer part of the hundred most popular publications asked in libraries, unlike the previous year.

In 2013, Roman was taken in libraries 75,000 times. Thus, the book was the third most popular in the UK.

Also in the top ten, Lee Child book entered (from the series about the former Policeman Jack Reercher), James Patterson, Kharlan Koben and Billingham Mark. Moscow, May 13 - RIA Novosti. Paper books in Britain for the first time began to be discovered on sales of their electronic versions, evidence of the research prepared by the British Publishers Association Publishers Association.

"Those who predicted the death of the books must be underestimated how much people love paper," the Telegraph newspaper leads the words of the Director of the Association of Stephen Lotinga (Stephen Lotinga).

According to the data obtained, the sales of paper books increased from $ 2.748 billion in 2014 to 2.76 billion pounds a year later. The sale of e-books demonstrated a drop from a mark of 563 million pounds to 554 million pounds, respectively.

"These data indicate that the publishing industry in the United Kingdom continues to be improved and that the love of the country to printed products has not yet been exhausted," added Loting.

Publishers Association employees associate such a result with the consciousness of readers of all the pleasures of reading a paper book, as well as with a huge number of documentary or scientific literature, which is not translated for e-books.

J "Son & Partners Consulting presents brief results of the study of the electronic book market in Russia and the world as part of the report" Development of a digital content market in Russia and the world. Results of 2013 ".

The world's e-book market is a nascent segment of digital content, which develops in a large pace due to the growth of sales of devices for reading. In 2013, the electronic book market increased by 37% compared with 2012, and in 2013-2014 it is expected that market growth will be about 28%, and its volume will reach $ 11 billion, according to WORLD NEWSMEDIA NETWORK.

According to The Global Ebook Report, at the beginning of 2014, the United States remained the largest player in the book market in the world, occupying 26% of the world market. The second large-scale market is the Chinese book market - 12% of the world market. Top 6 largest markets - USA, China, Germany, Japan, France, United Kingdom - accounting for almost 60% of the world market.

Great Britain

Each fourth purchase of a book in the UK accounted for a book in a digital format in 2013, while in 2012 only every fifth purchase took place on an e-book, which indicates an increase in the penetration of e-books.

Sales of E-books in the UK grew by 20%

Nielsen announced statistics on purchases of British books in 2013.

According to statistics from Nielsen, in 2013, the sale of e-books increased by 20% compared with 2012. The representative of Nielsen The guy Bom (Steve Bohme) reported that 80 million e-books British spent ј300 million in 2013. The share of e-books in sales volumes is growing: each fourth purchased book in the UK was electronic, while a year ago - each fifth.

Nevertheless, paper books continue to remain the most popular: in 2013, the British spent ј2.2 billion on them. This is 4% less than in 2012, but if you remove the sales statistics "50 shades ...", it turns out that the sales volume of paper books grew by 1%, reports the BookSeller magazine.

About 40% of the purchased e-books are an artistic prose for adults (in 2012 it was 33%). 10% make up books for children.

Nielsen draws attention to the fact that the average cost of "Samizdatovsky" books (which accounted for 25% of all purchased e-books) is much lower than the average cost of E-books published by traditional publishers. The average self-published E-book cost ј2, while published traditionally - from ј3 to ј5. Meanwhile, the recent survey showed that the British youth considers the prices of e-books overestimated.

In line with a global trend in Russia, the process of reforming federal legislation on the mandatory copy, its expansion on network electronic resources began. In this regard, it is important to study overseas experience. The United Kingdom is definitely the leader in this direction. And for us, it is also interesting because, as in Russia, the recipients of the mandatory copy are not only the National - British Library, but also five more libraries. Recall that at present, the United Kingdom includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. All territories have their own national libraries. The British Library performs the functions of the National Library of England and Great Britain.

In February 2013, we managed to meet directly with the developers of new legislation on the mandatory instance covering electronic resources. We believe that the history of the preparation and adoption of the document, as well as its text itself, is of interest both for developers of new Russian legislation and for direct participants of this process - publishers, content manufacturers, libraries.
