Every time the next new year was approaching, I was started to interest the question: "Where does it come from first? Where will his journey begun on earth?"

In the past two years, this question was not only interested in me, but, of course, could not compete with the "issue of the century": "When will the new millennium begins - January 1, 2000 or 2001?"

In fact, this issue contains several different issues. Some of them are related to physical phenomena, for example, when in this place on Earth end average sunny day December 31, 2001 or where the sun will take place on January 1, 2002?

In order to answer the first of the questions, it is necessary to find the easiest point on the Earth lying west of the dates change line. This is Cape Dezhneva on Chukotka (if not to take into account the lying little east of small islets). There it will happen for two minutes earlier than on the islands of Tonga, and ten minutes earlier than on the New Zealand Islands Chatham. To determine the point of the earliest sunrise, it is necessary to take into account the breadth and longitude of the point, its height above sea level, time of year (winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in southern), etc. For example, on January 1, 2000, the earliest sunrise according to the Greenwich Observatory occurred on the island of Catchal, which is included in the group of protected Nicobar Islands in the Bengal Gulf. Because of this, meeting the New Year there was no one, and the very first meeting took place on the top of the mountain of Pitt Island, which is part of the Chatham Islands group (Chatham) in subordination of New Zealand.

Another question is purely formal - where before all will come on January 1, 2002 according to the timely accepted time count. Before reasoning further, it is worth looking at a number of pictures. The most convenient of them is the map time belts in a cylindrical projection. The map is taken from the "educational atlas of the world" about 20 years ago (in fact, during this time it happened not too much changes, you can read about the most important things). It can be seen that the land is divided into - strips of approximately 15 ° wide in each of which a single time is established. Most often, the boundaries of time zones go on the borders of countries or their parts.

Very important item on this map is. It runs around 180 ° latitude, but it is very interesting and important for the issues under consideration. In the north, this line first deviates far to the East to get drunk by Chukotka, and then to the West, the ridge of Aleutian island stretching from Alaska. The line goes exactly in the 180th longitude, deviating to the East only knubled New Zealand.

I always thought. that the new year first comes to Chukotka, because it is located in the 12-hour zone, and since in Russia since the beginning of the 20th century dECORD TIME (shifted 1 hour ahead), then it is there that the first phenomenon of the new year happens.

But everything turned out not so simple.

The division of the world on time zone carries their quirks. So, for example, when in other places on the calendar, on January 2, on the two islands of the Pacific New Year, the new year is still coming. These are uninhabited islands Howland and Baker. Due to the fact that they are in the UTC-12 time zone, on them the new year begins later than all.

But the first to celebrate New Year's Eve inhabitants of Kiribati, Christmas and Line are beginning to celebrate. They have time zone utc + 14, so when the time in Hauland and Baker will show 11 hours, and on the calendar will be December 31, the clock on the island of Christmas is trying to eat an hour after midnight. January 2.

Despite the fact that there are no people in Hauland and Baker and only the coast guard of the United States of America can visit them, we can tell about these islands a lot of interesting things. First, it is worth noting that they belong to and are part of the wildlife rescue program.

Island Houseland

Hauland Island has a very interesting story. This block of land in the middle of the ocean opened in 1822 Georg Bradley Worth, who was the captain of the whaling ship "Oeno". At that time, the captain called the island in honor of himself, but after 6 years he was once again opened another captain, Daniel Mekreni, who gave the island the name of the owner of the vessel - Minera. Well, the third captain, who opened this land, became Geo Emery Necher. It happened in 1842, then the island, and received the name Hauland - so the name of the sailor who had noticed unfamiliar shores.

The first documented settlement was formed on the island in 1857. At that time, he was very valuable because of the possibility of obtaining guano on it. After all, as the law states, if the island is not in any jurisdiction, except, does not have owners and the local population, but there are guano deposits on it, then any American can own the land. But in 1886, the British arrived on the island stated that the right to the territory belongs to them. Then the British settlers have already appeared in Haulende, who mined Guano for 5 years.

The argument for the land was finally resolved only in 1936 after the colonization of the island of America. With the dawn of long-distance Aviation Hauland was a Pacific Strategic Base. Therefore, in the 37th year, the runway began to build here. She was intended for the now famous flyer Amelia Erhart, who wanted to fulfill its round-the-world flight. However, the journey ended in tragic - Erhart disappeared in the vicinity of Hauland.

Then during World War II, the island bombed the Japanese. When the war ended, all attempts to settle Hauland were unsuccessful. The main problem was the absence of fresh sources. Make an island attractive for tourists also failed. Local attractions are the ruins of Itascauna, airplane wreckage and Amelia Erhart Lighthouse. Then Howlend decided to recognize uninhabited and make a natural reserve.

Baker Island

The island also opened three different captains three times. He received his name in honor of the third captain - Michael Baker. Unlike its predecessors, Captain Baker decided to officially make the island with his property. Until now, the grave of one of his vessel's sailors remained on the island.

In 1855, the island bought a guano mining company. Then the same story is repeated with Baker Island as Hauland: After the claims of His UK, in 1935 America colonizes the land and sends its volunteers who originate the settlement called Mayerton. By the beginning of the world, the runway is built, but, together with the settlement itself, it gradually comes to run. And in 1974, Baker becomes the National Wildlife Reserve.

Places where the new year is celebrated by the first December 27th, 2014

When we still have the latest feverish preparations for the new year meeting, some residents of the Earth have not only met him and have fun to have been well, but by this time they even managed to relax and sleep. For there are places in the world where the new year is met much earlier than with us.

Under the cut, you will see those places where the new year is first on our planet.

1. Traditionally, the first will meet the new 2015 year at Kiribati. And if more specifically, on the linear islands that are located east than other islands of this country. In 1994, one of the presidential candidates has promised to citizens that if he defeats the election, it will make that Kiribati will be the first to celebrate the New Year around the world. He won and kept the word: suffered a demarcation line of time (the conventional line on the clock zone map). From that time, Kiribati is divided into three time zones, and in the easternmost of them, midnight occurs at 14 o'clock earlier than in London. (Photo: DS355 / Flickr.com).

2. In the same time zone as Kiribati, is tokelau, which includes a group of islands consisting of three coral atolls: Ataf, Nukunono and Fakofo. This is a dependent area from New Zealand. The change in the time zone here happened quite recently, in 2011, and the main reason for this was the problem of interaction in contacts with New Zealand, since before the island was on the other side of the demarcation line of the time. 3. For an hour later, the New Year will meet the residents of Samoa. In 2011, there was also a change in the time zone, the date on December 30, 2011 in the Samoa calendar was absent. This was done to better interact and develop cooperation with Australia and New Zealand. What is interesting, the previous change in the time zone was held in 1892 in order to fit the time to California. (Photo: Savai'i Island / Flickr.com).

4. At the same time, as in Samoa, the New Year inhabitants of Tonga - Islands, located in one third of the path between New Zealand and Hawaii, south of Samoa. (Photo: Pintxomoruno / Flickr.com).

5. The following will meet the new year inhabitants of chat rooms. This small archipelago, which consists of two inhabited islands - chats and Pitt. Other small islands have the status of reservations and, mostly, are not available for both residents of the islands and tourists. What is interesting, the island of chats have its own time zone, which is distinguished by 45 minutes (less) from the time of time in New Zealand. (Photo: Phil Pledger / Flickr.com).

6. After the inhabitants of the Chats, the following New 2015 will meet in New Zealand. (PHOTO: Philipp Klinger Photography / Flickr.com).

7. At the same time, as in New Zealand, will make a new year in Fiji. This state that is located on 322 islands and islands of volcanic origin, surrounded by coral reefs, of which only 110 islands are inhabited. (Photo: BRAD / FLICKR.com).

8. The first mainland state whose residents will celebrate the new 2015 (simultaneously with the inhabitants of New Zealand and Fiji) are Russia, or rather, the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, located in the southeastern part of the Valkhatka volcanic Peninsula. (Photo: jasja / flickr.com).

9. In the same time zone, like Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, there are numerous small islands and archipelagoes in the Pacific Ocean: Tuvalu, Nauru, Wallis and Futun, Wake and Marshall Islands. In the photo: Nauru Island. (Photo: Hadi Zaher / Flickr.com).

10. Traveling further and move to the west. The next new year will meet residents of New Caledonia - French Oil Territory, located in the western Pacific, in Melanesia, about 1,400 kilometers east of Australia and 1,500 kilometers north-west from New Zealand. Countries celebrating New Year simultaneously with New Caledonia, this is: Vanuatu, Federated States of Micronesia and Solomon Islands.

11. Together with the new Caledonia, the new 2015 will meet residents of another Russian city - Magadan. (Photo: Tramp / Flickr.com).

12. In my journey, we finally arrived in Australia, where the first new year will meet, of course, the inhabitants of the Eastern Coast - Sydney and Melbourne. (Photo: El Mundo, Economía Y Negocios / Flickr.com).

13. Simultaneously with the residents of Sydney and Melbourne, New Year will meet in Vladivostok and on such Pacific Islands as: Guam, Mariana Islands and Papua - New Guinea. In the photo: the island of Guam. (Photo: ORGAZMO / FLICKR.com).
