  • Try to find the desired file in another source on the Internet. You may be lucky enough to find a more suitable version. Google search example: "File filetype: SRT". Just replace the word "file" with the name you want;
  • Ask to send you the original file again, it may have been damaged in transit;

If our system cannot cope with the extension .SRT and all automatic and semi-automatic methods of teaching him this art have failed, all that remains is manual editing of the Windows registry. This registry stores all information related to the operation of our operating system, including the connection of file extensions with programs for their service. Command REGEDIT inscribed in the window "Search programs and files" or „Run in the case of older versions of the operating system, it provides us with access to the registry of our operating system. All operations performed in the registry (even not very complicated ones regarding the file extension .SRT) have a significant impact on the operation of our system, therefore, before making any modifications, you should make sure that a copy of the current registry is made. The following manual shows step by step how to modify the registry, specifically the entry in the registry that contains information about .SRT file.

Step by step

  • Click the "start" button
  • In the "Find programs and files" window (in older versions of Windows this is the "Run" window) enter the "regedit" command and then confirm the operation with the "ENTER" key. SRT (SubRip Subtitle File) is a text file format that stores subtitles for videos. Typically, subtitles are distributed with the video and include text indicating the time periods when it should appear on the screen. Are there any ways to view subtitles without resorting to video playback? Of course it is possible. In addition, in some cases you will be able to make your own edits to the contents of the SRT files.

Most modern video players support subtitle files. But usually this means simply connecting them and displaying text during video playback, but you cannot view the subtitles separately in this way.

A number of other programs that can open files with the SRT extension come to the rescue.

Method 1: SubRip

Let's start with one of the simplest options - the SubRip program. With its help, you can perform a wide variety of actions with subtitles, except for editing or adding new text.

Method 2: Subtitle Edit

A more advanced program for working with subtitles is Subtitle Edit, which, among other things, allows you to edit their content.

Pay attention to the cells marked with a marker. Perhaps the text contains spelling errors or requires some corrections.

If you select one of the lines, a field with text that can be changed will appear at the bottom. You can also make edits while displaying subtitles. Possible flaws in their display will be marked in red, for example, in the above figure, there are too many words in a line. The program immediately prompts you to fix it by pressing a button. Split String.

Subtitle Edit also provides viewing in the mode "Source List"... Here the subtitles are immediately displayed in the form of editable text.

Method 3: Subtitle Workshop

The Subtitle Workshop program is no less functional, although its interface is simpler.

By highlighting the required line, you can change the subtitle text, font and time of appearance.

Method 4: Notepad ++

Some text editors can also open SRT. Among such programs.

Method 5: Notepad

To open a subtitle file, you can do with a standard Notepad.

With the help of the programs SubRip, Subtitle Edit and Subtitle Workshop, it is convenient not only to view the contents of SRT files, but also to change the font and display time of subtitles, however, in SubRip there is no way to edit the text itself. Text editors such as Notepad ++ and Notepad can also open and edit SRT content, but it will be difficult to work with text decoration.

Perhaps not many people use subtitles, but sometimes I really want to hear the original voice of an actor and at the same time understand what he is talking about. That's what we need for this. Almost all BD-Rip or DVDRip embeds both original and Russian subtitles. How to enable them in two well-known video players - read carefully below.

Instructions

And two well-known video players are KMPlayer and, of course, MediaPlayerClassic, which is included in the K-liteCodecPack. By default, KMPlayer uses built-in codecs, but if the user wishes, it can also use the system ones. Subtitles are divided into internal and external. The internal ones are located in the video file itself, they can be disconnected and connected. External subtitles, i.e. separately connected, loaded from SRT and SUB files (the most common on the Internet).

There are several ways to select and connect subtitles: launch a video file using KMPlayerMPC. For example, take the movie Mission Impossible: Phantom Protocol, Blu-rayRip from a licensed disc with embedded English subtitles. Separately, Russian subtitles in SRT format were downloaded.

To enable subtitles in KMPlayer, right-click on an empty space in the player window, move the cursor to the "Subtitles" item and select "Open subtitles". Then specify the path to the downloaded subtitle file and click "Open". Subtitles have been successfully connected to this video file, and to display them, check the "Show subtitles" checkbox in the Subtitles menu. Due to the fact that there were still English subtitles in the file, you need to switch to Russian. To do this, go to the Subtitle menu - Subtitle languages and select Russian from the list (an inscription of something like this Subtitle / rus).

We hope we helped you solve the problem with the SRT file. If you do not know where you can download an application from our list, click on the link (this is the name of the program) - you will find more detailed information regarding the place from where to download the secure installation version of the required application.

What else could be causing the problem?

There may be more reasons why you cannot open the SRT file (not only the absence of the corresponding application).
At first- the SRT file may be incorrectly associated (incompatible) with the installed application for its maintenance. In this case, you need to change this link yourself. For this purpose, right-click on the SRT file that you want to edit, click on the option "To open with" and then select the program you have installed from the list. After such an action, problems with opening the SRT file should completely disappear.
Secondly- the file you want to open may simply be damaged. Then, the best solution is to find a new version, or download it again from the same source as before (maybe for some reason in the previous session the download of the SRT file has not been completed and it cannot be opened properly).
