Metrogyl denta gel is an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent for external use, used in the treatment of dental diseases, after tooth extraction, as well as teething in children.

The preparation contains potent antimicrobial substances, therefore the instructions for use should be carefully studied before starting the course of gel therapy.

Composition and release form of the drug

Metrogyl denta is available in the form of an ointment or gel for application to the oral mucosa. The dental preparation has a complex effect due to its two active components:

  • metronidazole benzoate;
  • chlorhexidine gluconate.

Both the first and second substances have a pronounced antiseptic effect. Moreover, metronidazole is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Auxiliary components that complement the composition of the drug:

  • saccharin;
  • sodium hydroxide;
  • disodium edetate;
  • levomenthol;
  • propylene glycol;
  • carbomer homopolymer;
  • purified water.

The drug is a white ointment of uniform consistency. Available over the counter, available in 20 g aluminum tubes. The tubes are packed in cardboard boxes.

Indications and contraindications

The gel is used in the treatment of infectious or inflammatory diseases of the periodontium, gums and oral cavity. It can be prescribed as a prophylactic agent after a course of treatment for stomatitis or tooth extraction.

The ointment is indicated in such cases:

  1. Gingivitis of any origin, acute or chronic.
  2. Periodontal disease and periodontitis of any form.
  3. Bedsores and ulcers of the gums and tongue caused by improperly fitted dentures or braces.
  4. Injuries to the mucous membrane of the mouth and gums.
  5. Inflammation of the socket after tooth extraction.

The gel destroys pathogenic microorganisms, relieves the symptoms of inflammation during stomatitis and stops the spread of infection after tooth extraction.

Thanks to menthol, which is part of the drug, it has a cooling and mild analgesic effect. It can also be used for pain relief and treatment of aphthous ulcers in stomatitis in children and adults.

Contraindications to the use of the product:

  • individual intolerance of the patient to any of the components of the drug;
  • alcohol consumption;
  • children up to age 14;
  • the period of pregnancy and breastfeeding.

In all these cases, it is better to choose analogs, for example, holisal or kamistad gel. These analogs can be used to treat gums in newborns, during pregnancy, after tooth extraction, etc.

The instructions for the use of the drug also draws the attention of patients that the application of a gel or ointment in no way replaces hygiene procedures and is not a reason to stop them.

Metrogyl denta acts locally, because its active components enter the bloodstream only in small quantities and rarely interact with other drugs. However, the physician should be informed if medications are regularly taken to treat other acute or chronic diseases and, if necessary, adjust the dosage and therapy regimen.

Possible side effects

Instructions for use of the drug draws attention to the fact that in rare cases, when using the drug, the following side effects and phenomena may occur:

  4. Flushing of the face.
  5. Stomach colic.
  6. Skin rashes, itching, swelling.

Overdose cases have not been reported to date. Excessive swallowing of the gel while treating the gums in children can cause the side effects listed above. In this case, it is better to do a gastric lavage and temporarily suspend treatment with this drug.

Mode of application

The instructions for use tell in detail exactly how the drug should be used for the gums and mucous membranes in order to bring maximum benefit, avoiding overdose and unwanted side effects.

Before applying the drug, it is necessary to clean the oral cavity from food debris and other drugs, if any. The product is applied with clean hands or with a cotton swab to the affected areas of the gums around the tooth, tongue and mucous membrane; you do not need to rub it.

In case of periodontitis after curettage, applications with gel or ointment are placed in the periodontal pockets. The duration of the procedure is 30 minutes. They need to be done twice a day for 7-10 days.

With alveolitis, the gel is placed in the hole 2-3 times a day, the duration of treatment is seven days. To prevent gingivitis or periodontitis, finger massage of the gums is performed daily using the gel for 2-3 minutes. Then you do not need to rinse your mouth; saliva can be spit out. After the procedure for 40-60 minutes, do not eat or drink. Prophylactic courses lasting 14 days can be carried out several times a year.

The cost of the gel is from 65 to 80 rubles, depending on the region of sale of the drug. High efficiency, almost complete absence of contraindications and affordable cost make the gel an indispensable tool for the treatment of dental diseases in every home medicine cabinet. Very rarely, patients look for analogues of this remedy.

The only drawback is that it cannot be used during pregnancy. But even during pregnancy, women also suffer from stomatitis, gingivitis or toothache. In this case, holisal is more suitable. Cholisal has the same properties as Metrogyl denta, but at the same time, Cholisal is different in composition, and therefore can be used during pregnancy and lactation.

Gel Cholisal is produced by a Polish pharmaceutical company and is sold without a prescription in the pharmacy. In addition to the fact that holisal can be used during pregnancy, the advantages include the complete absence of contraindications and cost-effectiveness - it is enough to apply holisal 2 times a day and forget about inflammation and pain.

Cholisal does not contain sugar, has a pleasant anise flavor, is quickly absorbed. And this means that neither the expectant mother during pregnancy, nor her baby will have to suffer from discomfort for a long time during teething of milk teeth - holisal acts almost instantly.
