“The greatest of all myths is the one that promises a magic formula for instant success.”

Everyone knows that in order to achieve great results, you need to work hard. Success does not come immediately; you need to go to it for a long time, overcoming obstacles from the outside, as well as fighting your own qualities such as laziness and fear.

Learning a foreign language is a long and painstaking task. Many people expect immediate results and, of course, are disappointed. You need strong motivation to learn a language. It's different for everyone.

Selecting a foreign language

Many people wonder what foreign language teach, and in the end they try to choose based on its ease. This means that you do not have a specific goal, and you will not get further than memorizing the lyrics of the song.

Basically, in many countries knowledge of the English language is required. All of us studied it at school. It is quite simple in both grammar and pronunciation (unlike, for example, French). Moreover, in our language and in English there are many similar words.

Which language is best to start learning depends on the country, employer requirements, and many other factors. One thing to remember here important thing- There is not a single person in the world who could not learn a foreign language.

Why do you need English?

This is the first question you should ask yourself before you start learning English on your own. Although it looks trivial, it is very important for further training planning.

Many people take courses, and at one point they may face a problem such as reluctance to continue studying. You are tired at work, the courses are located on the other side of the city - these are all reasons to feel sorry for yourself and stay at home.

Only you yourself can find the motivation that will help you in this difficult, but very interesting task. If you want a big salary, get a prestigious job abroad, or go to study in another country, you need to learn English.

What's the best way to start learning English? Find goals, without it you will never achieve any results. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is answer a few questions for yourself:

  • why do I need this language?
  • what goals do I want to achieve?
  • How will speaking a language help me achieve my goals?

When you answer these questions, you will understand how to force yourself to learn a foreign language. You will have strong motivation, anticipation of victory, and achieving a goal that you have long dreamed of.

You must clearly know why you are learning a language. This is important for those who are learning the language from scratch and for those who want to improve their knowledge. Answers must be specific. “Just in case”, “for the future”, “for everything” - does not work. After all, we cannot learn just like that, it negatively affects our emotional side.

The choice must be reasonable and conscious. The decision must be rational; this is the only way it can resist laziness and apathy, which often creep in for various reasons.

Only motivation helps you start learning a language correctly and bring it to a victorious end. Think about it, why do you need all this? What role does learning play in achieving goals? If it’s secondary, maybe there are other ways to achieve what you want?

Where to start learning English?

Once you have decided why exactly you need English, you must clearly define the period during which you must master a certain part. Don't exaggerate your capabilities. If you are learning a language from scratch, do not set yourself global goals - to learn it perfectly within a year. However, goals should not be small, otherwise you simply will not have enough motivation.

Another important point- responsibility. You should remember that you have only two options - learn the language or lose this battle. When you accept responsibility, you will understand:

- the thoughts “I’m not smart”, “I don’t have money for classes” are just excuses. The main thing is desire, and there is always a solution to the problem;

- you made a conscious decision, which means that in case of failure you can only blame yourself;

- and the last thing: which path to choose is up to you, no one else will help you with this.

Where to start learning a foreign language? With faith in your strength, with anticipation of victory. It is important to know and understand why you need it, and only after that the training will go in the right direction and be as effective as possible.

English for dummies from scratch. How to start?

The initial stage in learning English is the most difficult, but you have the most important thing - strength and desire

Where to start learning English?

Learning English from scratch simply won’t work, because you already have a certain amount of knowledge in your head. And this is thanks to the many borrowed words ( information, conflict, comfort), names brands (Tide- clean, Safeguard- protection, Dove- dove), speaking surnames famous people (Tina Turner(turner), Nicolas Cage(cell), names musical groups (No Doubt(without a doubt), Destiny's Child(child of destiny) Spice Girls(Pepper girls). Not to mention the well-known phrases thank you, hello, yes, ok, wow, which we have been using in Russian colloquial speech for a long time.

Without knowing it, you already speak English words and expressions. And this is the first thing that should inspire you! All that remains is to direct the existing knowledge in the right direction.

How to choose a school and English teacher?

The best option at the initial stage of language acquisition is to find a teacher. By famous saying, the student is not a vessel to be filled, but a torch to be lit. This torch can be lit for you by a teacher, with a twinkle in his eye and a great desire and ability to teach. The most important thing is that it must be a professional in his field .

“You are looking at an unprofessional if, instead of constructing live conversational situations, he forces you to perform tasks at the level of meaning, i.e. just “chasing” you through the textbook. Instead of constantly complimenting you, encouraging communication, he makes comments, rejoices at every mistake you make, if he goes to class without original materials (newspapers, magazines, books, radio programs, etc.), limits himself teaching aids" Ilya Frank

Russian teacher or native speaker?

And one more wish - first of all, it should be a Russian-speaking teacher. Only he will be able to understand why you made this or that mistake, and will explain complex grammatical phenomena in simple words, the difference between words, comparing them with the Russian language.

However One teacher is not enough to master a language. In your free time from classes, do additional tasks and repeat what you have learned. Anyone who has the desire and interest will definitely do it.

Or it is possible that you have motivation, but for some reason you decided to learn English on your own. Be prepared for the fact that this will require much more time and effort, since you will need to not only complete tasks, but also select and check them yourself! Here, YouTube channels for learning English can help you.

Group classes on English language in an offline school - great way learn the language and meet new people

To clearly understand what you need to learn, you need to know its structure. Imagine that words (vocabulary) are musicians, each of them can play individually, their instruments make sounds (phonetics), and in order to organize them into a single orchestra, coordinate them, they need a conductor (grammar).

If the musician doesn’t show up (you don’t know the word), or he comes but plays the wrong notes (pronounce it incorrectly), or the conductor gives the wrong command (break a grammar rule), you won’t get a perfect symphony!

Important!

Vocabulary, grammar, phonetics are the three pillars on which the language rests. Only by studying them together can you master and understand the language and sound beautiful and correct.

Learn English words

Suppose a lost tourist does not know grammar, but he knows individual words - i, search, station, or only one word station. Even if he pronounces it with an accent and not entirely correctly and addresses this word to passers-by, then, most likely, they will understand him. But if he doesn’t know how to speak a station in English, they’re unlikely to help him. Words are your base, constantly add to them lexicon.

The vocabulary of most native English speakers is 12,000-20,000 words, and in order to communicate in English, it is enough to learn 1,500-2,000 words. And this is not so much, especially if you set yourself a goal of learning 5 words every day.

There are a lot of ways to remember words; long lists of words in textbooks give way to colorful visual dictionaries, video materials on the Internet, where words on a specific topic are presented with their image and pronunciation. Or it could be paper cards that you can buy or make yourself.

Cards with images and translations into back side will help you quickly learn English words.

Let English words surround you! The method of hanging notes with words around the house has worked well. Hang a note on your door, window, or table with the word for this item, and believe me, very soon you will be naming these items in English.

From the very beginning, create your own dictionary in which you will enter all new words and expressions. And in order to make the results more noticeable and have something to praise yourself for - number the written words, highlight them different colors depending on how easy or difficult they are for you. Be creative, turn your dictionary into a unique creative masterpiece! See the video below for some ideas on how to design a dictionary.

And most importantly: do not learn everything, but only the essentials. Choose priority topics for yourself, for example, family, food, shopping, travel. Don't try to embrace the immensity. You learn a language all your life!

Having found the right word in the dictionary, take the time to look through the entire dictionary entry. There are situations when it is better to learn not a single word, but a whole expression, especially if it sounds different in Russian, for example, to get acquainted with, to be afraid of, to catch a cold. Having memorized such phrases as a whole expression, you will remember them ready-made, like one long word.

Don’t forget to repeat the written words from time to time, and then they will be remembered quickly and involuntarily. You can also install mobile applications to study English words, of which there are now quite a lot on the Internet.

Learn English grammar

Grammar cannot be ignored. No matter how much supporters of alternative and communication techniques fight against “cramming” grammar rules and boring exercises, grammar rules need to be taught and trained. At the initial stage of study, it will be easier for you to learn a ready-made rule and exceptions than to identify patterns yourself.

However, learning grammar should not become an end in itself. To consolidate the studied grammatical material, combine it with vocabulary. For example, having learned, write a story about your family or work day, having learned the degrees of comparison of adjectives - describe the weather forecast yesterday and today, having studied adverbs of quantity - write a recipe for your favorite dish.

Practice makes perfect

Consolidate the acquired knowledge in practice in all forms: reading, listening, writing, speaking. If you miss even one link from this chain, you risk never overcoming the language barrier.

These should be simple articles and news. Or adapted literature, where intricate constructions that are unnecessary at first are excluded, there are explanations and exercises for reading comprehension. Conveniently read books in electronic form with electronic dictionary, because all you have to do is point at an unfamiliar word and the dictionary will provide you with a translation, which is much easier compared to a paper dictionary.

Learn English by listening

This could be news, podcasts for beginners, stories. From time to time, use the passive listening method, let the English speech sound in background. Believe me, the information will be remembered on a subconscious level.

Try to repeat what you hear from native speakers, imitating intonation and pronunciation. You can see an example of intuitive memorization of words by watching the video.

Listen also to English songs, pick up individual words, develop your linguistic intuition. It is especially helpful to start with simple songs where lines or structures are repeated. For example, thanks to the song “All at once” (author Lenka) you will learn to compare:

It’s quite possible for even a beginner to repeat these lines, and by singing them, you practice pronunciation and can transform your speech.

What to watch first?

Find your method to learn English comfortably

A good start will not make you a fluent speaker. The tongue, like a plant, requires care, water it every day: read, listen, write, speak! And only then will it bear fruit.

Find your own path to your goal. Nobody knows you better than yourself. Try to think in English, describe everything that surrounds you. Let them be individual words at first, then phrases, and soon sentences.

French linguist Claude Agége once said: “Of all the languages on the planet, English is the most flexible and most responsive to changing reality.” And it’s true! Every year the English language is replenished with 4,000 new words!

Try teaching English to someone who knows it less well. Yes, you won’t learn anything new, but by explaining it to others, you will better understand and consolidate your knowledge. You can study together with someone (relative, friend, colleague), and compose short dialogues. It’s good if it’s a person who is as eager to master the English language as you are. Perhaps it will be easier for you to figure it out together.

The main thing is to exercise regularly and as often as possible (ideally every day). Your results depend on how systematically you do this. It's like an athlete who needs to stay in shape. This is the only way you will get used to the language. That's right, you need to get used to the language.

Finally:

The initial stage in learning English is the most difficult; it is at this stage that the foundation is laid. You have to overcome the language barrier and believe in yourself or lose the desire to learn the language forever. Remember the simple rules for successfully learning English:

  1. Find not just a teacher, but a professional in your field; if there is no opportunity or desire, be your own teacher.
  2. Practice regularly, do not take on new things without repeating what you have learned.
  3. Train all types of speech activities: listening, speaking, reading, writing. Let the English language into your life, and it will reciprocate your feelings.
  4. Love what you do so that learning a language becomes a part of your life and brings pleasure. With the right methods and materials it won't be difficult! Good luck!

  • State – to be (to be), to know (to know), etc.

At school such verbs are taught as follows. Students are given their list, and the teacher asks them to learn as much as possible from it by the next lesson. This list does not have any structure to facilitate the study of such verbs. Therefore, few of us were able to master the English language at school.

Modern techniques are very different from those in which foreign languages are taught at school

How to quickly learn irregular verbs in English?

  • As mentioned above, to learn such verbs you can use the “card method”. But, unlike “simple” words, irregular verbs have three forms. What actually makes them wrong
  • To make cards with irregular verbs, you need to write down the first form on one side, and the other two on the second side. Moreover, the first form does not need to be provided with a translation. And on the reverse side you not only need to write two forms of the verb with translation, but also provide a hint. For example, “alternating irregular verbs with a vowel in the root from [e]”
  • The advantage of this method is that it is easy to use. You can go through the cards with your hands, first remembering the main shape, and then turn them over and do the same with other shapes. Such training can be done both at home and at work. Students can take these cards with them to college and repeat the verbs during breaks.

Example card:

To make it easier to memorize irregular verbs, they can be grouped into:

  • the method of formation of the second and third forms
  • repeatability or non-repeatability of forms
  • alternation of root vowels
  • sound similarity
  • spelling features

All other verbs should be structured not alphabetically, as in school, but according to the above principles:

How to learn tenses in English

Another pitfall for anyone who wants to learn English is tenses. Having understood their use, you can take a big step forward in learning this language.

In general, there are three tenses in English:

But the difficulty lies in the fact that each time has types. The first type of such tenses is called Simple. That is, there is:

Continuous (continued, long) is the second type of tense.

The third type is called Perfect. Thus there are:

There is also another type of tense that combines all the previous ones Perfect Continuous(perfectly continuous). Accordingly, the times can be:

IMPORTANT: In specialized literature on the English language, Simple can be called Indefinite, and Continuous - Progressive. Don't be scared, it's the same thing.

  • In order to use English Times in sentences, you need to understand what action is happening? It is regular, it happened yesterday, it happens in this moment and so on. Simple tenses denote an action that occurs regularly, but its exact moment is not known. on Sundays – on Sundays (specific time is not known)
  • If the sentence specifies a specific time (at the moment, from 4 to 6 o’clock, etc.), then Continuous is used - a long time. That is, time that denotes a specific moment or a specific period of time.
  • If the action is completed, Perfect is used. This time is used when the result of an action is already known or you can know exactly when it will end (but may still be going on)
  • The Perfect Continuous construction is used least often in English. It is used to denote a process whose action is not completed, but needs to be said about it at the moment. For example, “In May it will be 6 months that I have been studying English.”
  • To study the tenses of the English language, you can also create tables, as for irregular verbs. Just enter linguistic formulas instead. You can use special literature. Better than several authors at once

Dmitry Petrov’s method “Polyglot 16” talks very well about tenses

How to learn text in English?

  • If you need to learn a text in English in a short period of time, you can use several techniques for this purpose.
  • Before learning a text in a foreign language, you need to prepare. Namely, translate it. On the one hand, it is impossible to learn a text in English without knowing what is written there. On the other hand, while we are translating, something will already be recorded in the “subcortex”
  • When translating a text, you need to re-read it several times. If you do this during the day, then repeat this procedure before going to bed. We will sleep and our brains will work
  • In the morning, the text needs to be printed and hung in visible places. When preparing food, the text should be in a visible place in the kitchen. We vacuum in the living room, it should also be visible

Text in English is remembered very well if recorded on a voice recorder

Let's go to the store, put headphones in your ears and listen, repeating every word to yourself. IN gym, instead of hard rock, you need to listen to this text again.

If the text is large, then it is better to split it into several small excerpts, and remember each of them in turn. Don't be afraid, learning text in English is not as difficult as it seems.

How to learn English in your sleep?

At the end of the Soviet era, many “unique” self-education methods poured into our country. One of them was to study foreign languages while sleeping. Before going to bed, a cassette with lessons was put into the player, headphones were put on, and the person fell asleep. They say this method has helped some.

I know everything that sleep is very useful. According to researchers involved in this problem, sleep can improve mental abilities.

And in general, a well-rested person “absorbs” information better
  • But for some reason he absorbs it after sleep. English words from the player can only ruin your sleep. This means worsening the perception of information the next day.
  • But, sleep can really help. But, only if you set aside time immediately before studying English
  • After such a lesson, you can get some sleep, and during this time your brain will “process” the information and put it into “shelves.” This method of learning foreign languages has proven effective and is used by many people.
  • This technique can be improved if, immediately after sleep, you consolidate what was learned before bedtime.

Learning English: reviews

Kate. To learn a foreign language you need to devote at least 30 minutes a day to it. Every day for half an hour. Even one missed day will have a very negative impact. I definitely devote 30 minutes to English a day. Plus, if you still have time, be sure to take it as a bonus.

Kirill. Now there are a lot of sites on the Internet where material is presented in a playful form. I'm learning English through TV series. I watch TV series in this language with Russian subtitles. I used to read subtitles all the time. And now I’m trying to understand myself.

Video: Polyglot in 16 hours. Lesson 1 from scratch with Petrov for beginners

Not everyone should become polyglots and learn dozens of foreign languages, but become a person twice (remember the famous catchphrase), having learned impeccably native language and English, everyone should.

That's just where to start learning English so that such a good motivation does not end at the preparatory stage?

I will share with you my experience of learning English and the experience of my girlfriend.

Where to start learning English and what is stopping us?

I don’t know what’s wrong with our education system, but an overwhelming number of graduates of regular schools know English at the level of “London from the Capital of Great Britain”, “May Name from...” and “Im Onduty Today”.

Modern youth (not all, fortunately) seem to understand that good knowledge of English is a step to success that must be overcome, but either they don’t know where to start learning English, or they don’t demand enough from children at school, then Whether they teach poorly, few manage to take the language barrier by storm.

Well, okay, school with its bad teachers and your youthful stupidity is left behind.

Now you are an adult.

What are your excuses now? What's stopping you now?

And I will answer you.

No matter how much you nod at the lack of free time, the lack of money for a tutor, the lack of good courses in your city, no matter how much you convince yourself “I’ll go on maternity leave and study English” - all these are excuses.

You don't want to start learning a foreign language because you're lazy.

As soon as you destroy so dangerous enemy, like laziness, you will immediately feel an irresistible desire to study.

You just need to start learning English!

I'll open it for you little secret: You have already started learning English.

Do you know when you did it?

When we watched English-language films with subtitles, when we stared at an advertisement or sign in English, when we read labels on clothes in a boutique, when we laughed and repeated after the movies and literary heroes: “Astalavista, baby” or “tu bi o not tu bi”, etc.

There are no people in our country, perhaps with the exception of ancient old men in remote villages, who would have a zero level of knowledge.

And if you also taught English “little by little, something and somehow” at school, then you’ve already done a third of the work.

All that remains is to consolidate the result.

You just need to start studying the language more seriously.

Just today, without feeding yourself endless breakfasts:

  1. Decide whether you will or with someone else's help.
  2. Find audio lessons online.

    Here, for example, they are here: http://www.free-english-online.org/audiouroci.

  3. Start watching your favorite cartoons, films and TV series in the original language (for starters, you can limit yourself to subtitles).
  4. Buy a small dictionary at the bookstore (so what if there is an online translator, a book is a book and it will always be at hand!).
  5. Buy or find online several children's books or comics in English and read them, looking for translations of unfamiliar words in the dictionary.

Do everything I listed today, and you can consider that you have already started learning English.

The main thing is not to give up everything tomorrow, but to find the strength to comprehend the wisdom of foreign speech.

Where to start learning English on your own?

Let's say you decide not to feed bourgeois tutors, but to learn English on your own.

Don't know where to start?

Where would you start teaching your child their native language?

That's right: from the alphabet.

Having learned the English alphabet, start expanding your vocabulary.

First, it is advisable to master:

  • numbers;
  • days of the week and months;
  • colors;
  • greeting, farewell, apology;
  • names of animals, flowers, vegetables, fruits, etc. - in general, those words that you use most often in conversation.

Gradually move on to grammar to understand how sentences are constructed.

English grammar is not very simple, so you cannot do without textbooks.

When you master the basic grammatical rules and have a more or less decent vocabulary, start constructing sentences and even entire texts.

I don’t know why school teachers still believe that mindless memorization of foreign texts helps to learn English faster.

Does not help!

In fact, the greatest benefits come from:

  • cards or stickers with foreign words;
  • watching movies, news, programs - just watch some English-language channel on the Internet or on a plate more often;
  • Reading books;
  • audio and video lessons;
  • communication with native speakers of a foreign language.

Where to start learning English if you need professional help?

My friend Ira studied German at school (well, she studied - that’s a strong word, because she couldn’t speak it normally anyway).

Having got her first job, Ira realized that without knowledge of English she would not be promoted.

Since her level was very, very modest, she decided to find a teacher.

A friend considered various options:

  • private tutor;
  • group courses;
  • online training, etc.

I decided to go with the first option, since I was embarrassed to study in a group and didn’t trust online learning too much.

She looked for a tutor through advertisements online and in the local newspaper.

Ira categorically did not like the first tutor.

She was a retired teacher who still taught English the old fashioned way.

The second one was also not impressive: the student seemed to know the language quite well herself, but did not understand how to teach an adult.

The third sleek lady spent 20 minutes out of 45 bragging about her travels.

Only the fourth girl (a graduate of the Faculty of Philology who worked in the USA for two years) satisfied my friend in all respects.

To start learning English, also listen to the advice

voiced in this video:

Where to start learning English with a tutor: 4 tips

This is what Ira advised my readers who also want to start learning a foreign language with a tutor or in courses:

  1. Request a trial lesson (even if it’s not free, it should cost less than a regular lesson).
  2. Don't expect that you can find a great teacher for 5 cents.

    Remember that “a cheap fish is a bad fish”.

    Do not agree to pay in advance for several lessons with a tutor (for example, 10), even if you are offered a discount.

    It is likely that you will want to change teachers, but no one will return your money.

    If you are not satisfied with something about a teacher, change him immediately.

    You pay money, which means you don’t have to settle for an unqualified teacher.

Ira also advised not to be lazy to study at home and follow all the tutor’s advice.

The fact that you have finally decided to sign up with a tutor is not a guarantee that at the last lesson you will speak this language fluently.

You can take courses for years (remember how many years you studied a foreign language at school) and remain at the “below the baseboard” level.

Use every free minute to enrich your vocabulary and then everything will work out.

Still not sure where to start learning English?

I’ll tell you the most effective and enjoyable method: buy a ticket to the USA or UK and live here for at least a month, using every free minute to communicate with locals.
