The backbone of the acting ensemble was the Lenkom Theater troupe. Leonid Bronevoy was accepted for the role without auditioning. Satire Theater actor Yuri Vasiliev initially auditioned for the role of Theophilus, but Leonid Yarmolnik was approved. Some difficulties arose with the role of Martha. Initially, Tatiana Dogileva, Irina Mazurkevich and other actresses auditioned for the role. After a long search, the creators of the film were satisfied with the candidacy of Elena Koreneva.
Filming
The film was shot in Germany, in the socialist part of it - the GDR. The real Munchausen lived near Hanover in the city of Bodenwerder, located on the territory of capitalist Germany. It was much easier to organize filming on the territory of the friendly socialist GDR, so the filming location was the streets of the city of Wernigerode, which had an “authentic” appearance and was practically not damaged during the war.

Oleg Yankovsky unwittingly changed the essence of the text spoken by his hero. But when dubbing the film, Yankovsky misspoke, saying: An intelligent face is not yet a sign of intelligence. In this form, the phrase, despite the protests of Grigory Gorin, remained in the film.
