March 20, 1974 almost became fatal for the entire royal family. That evening, 26-year-old Ian Ball tried to kidnap the 24-year-old princess. His car blocked the path of Anna's car, in which she and her husband were returning from a charity event to Buckingham Palace in the evening. Ian instantly jumped out of the car and opened fire. He injured Inspector James Beaton, Anna's driver Alex Callender and journalist Brian McConnell, who followed the princess's car and tried to protect her at a dangerous moment.

After this, Ian approached Anna’s car and shared his plans with her - he was going to kidnap her, and then demand a ransom of 2-3 million pounds sterling from the royal family. But not for yourself, but for needs National service healthcare. When Ian asked the princess to get out of the car, she refused. Then former boxer Ron Russell, who happened to pass by and witnessed what was happening, came to the rescue. He crept up behind the criminal and hit him on the head, thereby allowing Anna to get out of the car and escape. Ron was later awarded the St. George Medal for bravery, and he told reporters that at the presentation, Elizabeth II told him:

You receive a medal from the hands of the queen, and gratitude from the heart of a loving mother.

Ian Ball was found mentally ill and sentenced to life in prison.

“Everything happened so quickly,” Princess Anne later recalled in an interview. - He opened the car door and said that I should go with him. I replied that I have a different opinion on this matter. I tried my best to be polite with him, because to be rude in such a situation is stupid, to say the least. I repeated several times that I would not get out of the car. I practically lost all my composure at that moment and understood that if he forced me to leave, I would definitely hit him and I could not avoid a return shot.

Princess Anne is called the hardest worker in the British royal family. In 2017, she fulfilled more than 100 official obligations, and in 2018, she spent 75 days working between January 1 and May 22 alone. In addition, Anna is involved in the work of more than 300 charitable organizations.

The only daughter of the Queen of Great Britain is not only the most hard-working of the whole family, but also the most law-abiding. In 2001, she was given a £400 fine for speeding on the road, and in 2002 she had to pay another £500 fine after her dog Dottie attacked children in Windsor Great Park.

Anna refused to give any titles to her children - Peter and Zara. She did not want the titles to have any influence on their lives and the children to fulfill royal obligations.

Today, August 15, celebrates his 68th birthday only daughter Elizabeth II, Princess Anne, 13th in line to the throne. We published facts from the life of her mother and father, Prince Philip, brother, Prince Charles, daughter Zara Phillips, nephews - Princes William and Harry - and even their wives - Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, but we ignored Princess Anne herself. And quite unfairly, because her biography is no less interesting and rich in breathtaking events. Just look at the failed kidnapping of Anna for ransom! A professional equestrian, Olympic Games participant, the most hardworking representative of the royal family, mother of two children - we invite you to get to know her better.

Anne was born early one morning at Clarence House in 1950, two years before her mother, Princess Elizabeth, was to become Queen of Great Britain. She is the only daughter of Elizabeth and Prince Philip and the second oldest child.

Until 1987, Anna bore the title of princess, and then Elizabeth II gave her an honorary title Royal Princess, which is traditionally awarded to the eldest daughter of the reigning monarch.

Her full title reads as follows: Her Royal Highness Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise, Princess Royal, Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Additional Lady of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Dame Grand Cross and Grand Master of the Royal Victorian Order, Dame Grand Cross of the Most Venerable Order of St. John's Hospital in Jerusalem.

Princess Anne, 1968

Princess Anne began participating in royal duties at the age of 18 - in 1969, immediately after graduating from school. That same year, she went on her first official foreign tour with her parents - to Austria. Since then, she has traveled outside her country at least three times a year and became the first member of the British royal family to make an official visit to the USSR in May 1990.

Princess Anne became the first of the royal family to decide on a divorce and a second marriage since the Grand Duchess of Hesse Victoria, granddaughter of Queen Victoria (on her father's side) and Emperor Alexander II (on her mother's side). In 1901, Victoria divorced her cousin Ernst Ludwig, and in 1905 she married cousin Nicholas II, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich.

So, in November 1973, Anna married Captain Mark Phillips - the ceremony took place in Westminster Abbey. In this marriage she had two children: in 1977, Peter Mark Phillips, and in 1981, Zara Phillips. But in 1989, the couple announced their separation.

The divorce proceedings of Anna and Mark were completed in April 1992, and already in December of the same year she married for the second time - to Commander Timothy Lawrence, only this time the ceremony was much more modest and took place in a church in Scotland, where second marriages were treated leniently.

Princess Anne rarely misses a major race, especially Royal Ascot. And all because she herself is a professional rider and previously took an active part in various competitions. So, in 1971, she won the individual event at the European Eventing Championships, and in 1976 she competed for a medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, and her horse Goodwill, owned by Elizabeth II, helped her in this. Anna is now President of the British Olympic Association and is a member of the International Olympic Committee.

An extraordinary woman, a bright personality, who is not only an outstanding athlete (she is a famous equestrian rider), but also an active public figure. Under Anna’s patronage there are more than two hundred organizations, associations and foundations of charitable, cultural and environmental areas. In particular, the Antarctic Heritage Foundation.

Princess Anne was born, like her brother, at Clarence House, but was christened in the Music Salon in Buckingham Palace. Four generations of kings, queens, princes and princesses united around her cradle.

At the time of her birth, she was in third place in the order of succession to the throne; after Elizabeth ascended the throne, she moved to second place (until the birth of her brother Prince Andrew in 1960). Currently in twelfth place in the order of succession to the throne.

The silver baptismal font, which had been in use since 1840, was brought from Windsor Castle and the Archbishop of York performed the christening ceremony. Lord Mountbatten was one of the godfathers. Charles tirelessly walked from one guest to another, asked endless questions, then jumped up from his seat, then sat down again and was in great excitement.

Following the example of her mother, Elizabeth herself breastfed the child and generally took care of him for a long time. Anne was one and a half years old when her mother became queen; the girl was used to being taken from one residence to another, and therefore showed no signs of nervousness when leaving the nursery at Clarence House to change it to the nursery at Buckingham Palace.

Two years later, Anna finds herself at her desk private school, created by the queen at Buckingham Palace, where her teacher was the Scot Miss Catherine Peebles, who received the nickname Mipsy from the princess.

In the first years, the student showed diligence and attention, but even then her caustic remarks foreshadowed that she would have a sharp tongue and great stubbornness.

Her character, as it turned out, was very complex, extroverted, that is, turned towards to the outside world, and she inherited attacks of bad mood and arrogance, even arrogance, from her father. Music is believed to soften people's tempers, and Anna learned to play the piano under the guidance of Haida Boer, and also took dance lessons once a week.

Anna, Princess Royal, next to her hotel in Kyiv (Ukraine) in the mid-70s.

According to some evidence, Anna had a resemblance to Shirley Temple. When she was six years old, this spoiled girl received for her birthday a magnificent dollhouse with a thatched roof, lined with chintz inside, in which everything was arranged like in a real house.

1974

Despite numerous gifts, Anna was angry with her older brother and felt a feeling of jealousy... like many children, she wanted to be his equal...

When Prince Philip taught Charles to swim in the palace pool, she complained that her father did not give her such lessons. Her governess advised everyone to “exercise the necessary art of diplomacy” in relation to the child, who clearly felt jealousy and envy of his older brother.

In the same class at the palace school, two girls studied with Anna, one of them was Caroline Hamilton, the daughter of the dean of the house church of Windsor Castle. One summer in Balmoral, during lunches, Mademoiselle de Rouge began to teach Anna French. The next year, Madame Suzanne Josseron, a teacher at the French Institute in London, came weekly to help Anna deepen her knowledge of this language.

Ethiopia, February 1973.

At the age of nine, her father introduced her to the science of driving a car, which is generally surprising for that age; So, Anna began driving the old subcompact Austin along the alleys of the royal estates. When Anna, at the age of seventeen, received a driver’s license on her first try, she remembered, not without pleasure, those long years when I gained driving experience.

Anna only graduated from high school, lived for horses and for horses, and met Mark Phillips, whom she married.

She lived with her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips (born 1948), for 18.5 years. From this marriage there are two children: Peter Phillips (1977) and Zara Phillips (1981). She then broke up with him at the age of thirty-nine, having given birth to two children from him: Peter and Zara.

Anna, who lives outside the city, still constantly “keeps her ground under her feet” in Buckingham Palace. Its secretariat (of two people) is located there; the secretaries are entrusted with handling its mail; Anna also has two ladies-in-waiting, one of whom remains in London to manage the secretariat, and the second accompanies her on official trips. It should be noted that today its secretariat is headed by a military man.

The Princess has a reputation as the most hardworking member of the royal family and devotes almost all her time to working in numerous charitable foundations. Last year she presented more than 600 times royal family or public organizations Great Britain at various official events within the country and abroad. In 2000, the princess managed to visit Bangladesh and Nepal a week before her anniversary.

And in 2007 I visited Antarctica! The interest of a high-ranking person is quite understandable. After all, the Ukrainian scientific station was a generous gift from Queen Elizabeth to the state, which had just emerged as an independent state, more than 10 years ago. Previously, being British, the station bore the name "Faraday". The Ukrainians called her “Academician Vernadsky”.

This is not the first time that Princess Anne has been in the far South and, according to winterers, she is conducting several works on polar topics, which are integral part Antarctic program. So she had something to talk about with the specialists who work at the station and, by the will of fate, received a legacy from british crown. The princess recalled that she had been to Kyiv, where she participated in international horse riding competitions. The Ukrainian capital left pleasant impressions in her memory. She liked the Ukrainian Antarctic station no less

The princess's escort consisted of four people, among whom was her husband, Admiral of the British Fleet Timothy Lawrence, two ladies, one of whom takes care of the preservation and restoration of Antarctic monuments, and the other of solving environmental problems; accompanied by the guest and the captain of the said vessel.

In the case of Anna, we are dealing with a certain paradox. As much as Lady Diana seemed literally destined to play the role of a princess from a fairy tale, Anna always refused this role. She was always torn by two desires: one - to maintain her position in society and correspond to her “rank” and the second - to live for her own pleasure; she could not achieve balance, condemning herself to something that would never please everyone.

The princess is known for her charitable activities and as the only member of the British royal family to participate in the Olympic Games (she competed in equestrian competitions at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and took 24th place in the individual eventing championship). From 1986 to 1994 she was president of the International Equestrian Federation. Member of the IOC since 1988, head of the Commission for the Election of IOC Members

Princess Anne also took part in the Olympic Games. Anna was entrusted with delivering the Olympic flame from Greece to the UK on the eve of the 2012 Games. Her candidacy was not chosen by chance: the princess is the only member of the British royal family who has previously taken part in the Olympics. She arrived at the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal as part of the country's equestrian team. True, in the individual eventing championship the princess managed to take only 24th place. Subsequently, both the professional and personal life of Princess Anne was closely connected with the Olympic movement. After the Games in Montreal, she was part of the International Olympic Committee, of which she was an honorary member until 1994. The princess's first husband was Captain Mark Phillips, who represented Great Britain at two Olympics. A youngest daughter- Zara Phillips - defended the honor of the country at the Olympic Games in London 2012.

However, despite the fact that she has a rather bad reputation, which is literally stuck to her, she still managed to gain some popularity, because it is she who performs today greatest number official duties per year. But at the same time, she is also reproached for violating the rule accepted and observed in English society: never look like you are doing more than you should.

You ask me: “What about her reputation?” For all her merits and regalia, Anna was convicted... Yes, don’t be surprised! The rule of law in Great Britain does not bypass high-ranking persons.

Firstly, Anna was repeatedly fined for speeding... reckless, however. But this is not the worst thing. For many years, Anna has been breeding fighting dogs, bull terriers, which are banned in England, of which she has about a dozen, and even drags them around himself...the first victim was a harmless royal dog...Dottie the bull terrier, owned by Princess Anne, bit to death the beloved dog of her mother Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, the corgi Pharos. The incident occurred at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where the royal family gathers annually to celebrate Christmas.

The moment the gatekeeper opened the door for Anna, the corgis were the first to run out to meet the princess. However, Dottie stood in their way, grabbed the older dog and broke one of her hind legs in three places. The queen herself came out to growls, squeals and barks. Her Pharos, started 10 years ago, was bleeding. Royal veterinarians treated him urgent help, but were still forced to euthanize the dog on Tuesday.

Next was one of the maids of Windsor Castle, who cleaned the princess’s apartment. Then they paid off. But when the dogs attacked two young children in Windsor Park, then the princess was brought to trial.... That’s a criminal record and a fine.. The children’s parents were left very unhappy that the court sentenced Anna to only a £500 fine and a compulsory leash for her dog in public places. However, the sentence included a mention that next time aggressive behavior a bull terrier will be sufficient reason to euthanize it.

An assassination attempt was made on the princess on March 20, 1974. That evening she and her husband, Captain Mark Phillips, were returning to Buckingham Palace. The couple was riding in a limousine with a driver when a car overtook them and, suddenly braking, blocked the street. The driver who violated the rules jumped out of the car and opened fire on the limousine. The princess's driver and one of her guards were wounded. Police officer Michael Hills, who was on duty nearby, heard the shots and rushed to the scene and was also wounded by the gunman. Brian McConnell, a journalist riding in a taxi following the royal limousine, jumped out of the car and tried to grab the terrorist's hand, but he responded with a point-blank shot and disappeared into the depths of the park. The criminal turned out to be 26-year-old unemployed Ian Ball, who was soon detained.

The frightened but unharmed couple were taken to Buckingham Palace. The princess immediately made a short statement: “We thank God for helping us to remain unharmed. We are concerned for the lives of those injured, including our driver Mr Callender and Inspector Beaton." Everyone noted the dignity with which these words were spoken. On the morning of March 21, Ian Ball appeared in court. He was charged with the attempted murder of Inspector James Beaton. But it soon became clear to the court that Ball was a mentally ill person.

St. James's Palace is one of the oldest palaces in London. Although British monarchs have not lived in it for more than two centuries, it continues to be considered the official residence of the Queen, and foreign ambassadors are accredited specifically “to the Court of St. James,” although they present their credentials to Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

The palace was built in 1531 - 36 by order of Henry VIII on the site of a former leper colony and St. James's Hospital. The red brick Tudor-style building served as London's second palace, the main one being Whitehall. After the fire of 1698 destroyed Whitehall, the official residence was moved to St. James's Palace, although it was clearly too small for this purpose, and the royal court complained that the palace was cramped and unsuitable.

In 1837, upon the accession of Queen Victoria to the throne, the royal residence was moved to Buckingham Palace.

Currently, St. James's Palace is operational, although the Queen herself does not live in it. It is the official London residence of Princess Anne, Princess of Great Britain and Princess Alexandra, The Noble Lady Ogilvy (the Queen's daughter and cousin, respectively).

The palace is not open to the public, but the Queen's Chapel is sometimes open. The palace is guarded by the Royal Guards in red uniforms and bearskin hats.

19-year-old Princess Anne during the New Year holidays at Sandringham, January 1970

If appearance had any meaning for Princess Anne, she could easily hold the title of style icon for many years. At the age of 19, the Queen’s only daughter received the nickname “British Catherine Deneuve”; she was besieged by the editors-in-chief of glossy magazines with offers to become the heroine of their covers. But, alas, unlike the same Princess Diana, Anna preferred other hobbies to fashion and self-PR (despite the fact that Anna began to engage in charitable activities long before Lady Di and did it no less effectively, just without unnecessary noise in the press). So, we can only admire her old photos and imagine what kind of competition she could give to Diana if she only wanted to.

At 16 years old, Anna was little different from teenage girls like her: a little angular, a little plump, and she really wanted to look older than she actually was. She had sorted out her weight by the age of 20, completely and irrevocably (since then her clothing size has remained unchanged, as evidenced by her personal dressmaker, who sewed over 250 outfits for her throughout her life). And, apparently, after this photo, taken in honor of her 16th birthday, Anna finally realized that short hair and bangs are not for her. In addition, the 70s were approaching, and this also affected the princess’s style in the next decade.

Anna received the unofficial title of the main worker bee in the royal family at the age of 19. Historians have calculated that in the first two years after graduating from school, Anna attended over 500 official events as a “full-time working royal” (a term that is difficult to translate into Russian due to the fact that we simply do not have such a profession). It is noteworthy that even at 68, Anna does not lose shape - she still annually becomes the most active and active member of the royal family.

At the age of 20, Anne was already charming the Queen's African subjects. Around then, the princess began to be called “British Catherine Deneuve.” And there really was a similarity.
