Soviet animation and its traditions have deep roots. It is believed that the Russian market has not yet settled down. Many professional animators have to look for income from commercials to "adult" cartoons and mobile animation.

Igor Ganzha is the owner of Antimult Msk studio since 2008. He bought the studio from the previous co-owners and joined the project, which had an annual turnover of $ 1.5 million. He was going to cover new areas of selling his goods, one of which is the creation of cartoons at the request of TV channels. Antimult Msk, actively works with all media. The studio also worked with the Advertising Industry magazine, the Internet portal Mail.ru and others.

At the moment, participants in the Russian animation market are looking for income. Few are lucky. For example, the cartoon "Ilya Muromets and Nightingale the Robber" grossed $ 9 million at the box office, which is a good estimate for Russia.

You may be wondering what the money is made from? The answer is simple, advertising. After all, it is she who brings the main money in the cartoon environment. Even many animation studios in Russia have portfolios that contain various videos.

If you think about it, advertising is profitable in a cartoon environment. For example, Alexander Timofeev, general director of the animation studio "Tunguru", said: "Advertising is the most profitable point, an appendage of strength for starting studios." Animation studio "Tunguru" was involved in advertising and the release of music videos.

Everything would be fine if it were not for the animation competitors on the market - video spots. After all, animation is a handicraft that costs more than ordinary commercials. This process has its own difficulties. An inexpensive advertising video will cost $ 5,000, since every second costs at least $ 400, based on this, such work is much more expensive. There are cheap cartoons too, 15 seconds out for $ 750. At the same time, the final result will be discreet, no details, modifications, and background.

If the advertising business rises upstream, and constant orders will come, keeping operators busy, then the studio will be able to earn good money in this way. Minor studios can release up to 3 videos per month, which allows them to make a turnover of up to 50 thousand euros. But the client does not like to order a simple animated advertisement, because he considers it not serious. Therefore, as sad as it sounds, this stereotype covers the whole world. To do this, you have to endure a strong rivalry.

Where to get money to start your own business? This is the problem that 95% of aspiring entrepreneurs face! In the article, we have revealed the most relevant ways to get start-up capital for an entrepreneur. We also recommend that you carefully study the results of our experiment in exchange earnings:

Perhaps the studio is able to survive at the expense of some large clients for whom animation in advertising is not an empty phrase. However, this is a risk. A small number of orders will not give confidence in the future, and at one point all this can collapse. Only those who have achieved recognition on TV, you can break out of this situation.

To a certain extent, cartoons were and are a part of television, but at the moment the reference point is towards the adult generation. The companies "Tunguru" and "Antimult" have proved themselves remarkably in this area. All this thanks to the famous to this day actress Nelly Uvarova who played the role of Yekaterina Pushkareva in the TV series "Don't Be Born Beautiful". After the show, the series became famous, and the animation studio "Tunguru" began to create a parody of the series. Supporting a TV series was originally an idea, but soon the series dropped in ratings and became less famous, taking on a life of its own. And then it was decided to release new episodes of this series, which made it more likely to be optimistic about the future.

In addition to all this, the studios intend to produce animated series for a group of people aged 16 and older. Having not fully understood the true possibilities of such animation, TV channels of various kinds of projects show significant caution. And in many ways the price plays a major role, since a decent cartoon has a price of 200 - 300 thousand dollars, which is considered much more expensive than ordinary TV series. The cartoon environment has very little airtime, only 5-10 minutes. Channel 2 × 2 actively purchases all cartoon content from Russian animators, earning itself significant popularity among children and adults. But all the same, the channel is not ready to buy out the rights to content or invest large funds to support animation studios, since the issue of price is aggravated.

There is also another source of income. For example, let's take the animation studio "Pertsemolka", born in 2007, and offering our works to Channel Five. On the one hand, this is considered economically beneficial, since the channel was able to buy content at cost. You will probably think that everything is bad ... Nevertheless, there are people who believe that all is not lost for Russian animation. The way out here is not TV confession. Such demand for products arises only from potential customers. It is believed that animation in the near future will be able to get a major leap forward due to the development of the Internet, Mobile TV, and so on. If you bypass TV, you can acquire your own consumer, which means continuous orders for studios and opportunities for stable growth and development in the future.

There are channels that operate on a mobile network, this can also be attributed to the sales market. Nevertheless, animation has at the moment an insignificant percentage on any TV channel, and the conclusion suggests itself that animation is still only a small part of mobile channels and information.

Now Russian animation continues its path in improving its qualities. New ideas and options for stable income are being developed, this allows you to look forward optimistically without looking back. But we have to talk about this in the future tense.

But still, I would like to hope that everything will work out, and Russian animation will take pride of place on television and computer screens. In the meantime, we will observe how she moves towards this goal.

We present to your attention the "Cartoon" project.

Opening a children's animation studio does not require a lot of start-up capital. In fact, such a school is one of the varieties of numerous schools for the creative development of children. However, unlike the latter, cartoon studios are not yet so widespread (especially in small towns), so there is practically no competition in this segment of the educational services market.

In the classroom in the cartoon studio, children will learn how to create animated films, get acquainted with all stages of work - from writing a script and character development to filming and voice acting. What is especially pleasant for children and their parents, at the end of the training they receive a cartoon made by the child. The equipment required to open your own studio does not take up much space, so a small room with an area of 25-30 sq. m. for a group of 3-6 people.

First of all, you will need a digital camera or digital video camera, a microphone, special spotlights or lights for setting light, a computer with the necessary software, a video projector for viewing finished works, as well as blanks, materials and tools for creating scenery and cartoon characters.

Please note: choose a camera or a camera that supports manual aperture and shutter speed control. Don't go for high definition. One million pixels are enough for such work. Also, do not forget about furniture - chairs, tables. A white board for writing and for viewing slides and cartoons on a projector is also useful.

The training program, as a rule, includes the following sections: searching and analyzing themes for the plot of a future cartoon, writing a script, breaking down and drawing individual scenes, creating sketches of characters and scenery, creating the characters themselves and decorations from plasticine and ceramics, shooting scenes, selecting musical accompaniment, editing, scoring.

The technology for creating an animated video is quite simple. First of all, a script is drawn up, then heroes and scenery are created. According to the script, a large number of separate frames are filmed, which, as a result, are assembled into one whole and projected at 24 frames per second, if we are talking about a sound clip, or 16 frames per second, if the video is not voiced. Finally, the soundtrack is superimposed on the picture and synchronized. Middle and high school children can be taught the basics of computer animation. In this case, all the characters, their facial expressions and poses are drawn on a tablet, and then, using a special program, the actual cartoon is created.

When choosing the location of the future animation studio, the presence of competitors in your city is of certain importance. However, even if there is no competition at all, you can rest assured that it will not be for long. Therefore, try to take full advantage of your position at the moment. It is advisable that your studio is located in the city center, or at least close to it. This will make it easier for parents and children to get to you.

Don't skimp on the sign. The brightly designed and memorable name of your studio will attract the attention of potential clients. If the budget allows, you can conduct an entire advertising campaign timed to coincide with the opening of the cartoon studio, including the placement of outdoor advertisements, advertisements in newspapers and magazines, holding event events with the distribution of flyers and invitations. Do not forget about discounts for first clients and more favorable prices with a one-time payment for a month of classes, and not for each lesson separately.

The success of any educational institution is due not only and not so much to its location, quality of equipment and advertising budget, although all this, of course, also matters. But first of all, the success of your business depends on the teachers who work for you. You can save on salaries for specialists only if you yourself are a professional in the field of animation, as well as have extensive experience working with children and are ready to conduct classes on your own.

Otherwise, when preparing a business plan, immediately include salary costs for one or two teachers (depending on the number of students and the schedule of classes) for at least 2-3 subsequent months of work. In addition to teachers, you will need an administrator who will answer phone calls, schedule classes, and accept payment.

Like any other service business, your cartoon studio will be seasonally driven. As a rule, the first enrollment of students takes place in early autumn. The total training period is about six months. The second set is planned for mid-January - early February. In the summer months, there is a decline in demand for such services, as many children leave the city for their holidays. The cost of one lesson is from 350 rubles. per person (for a group of at least 6 people), depending on the region. Classes are held 1-2 times a week for 40-60 minutes.

To open your own animation studio, you will need at least 350 thousand rubles (taking into account the purchase of the simplest equipment, the cost of renting premises and paying salaries to employees for the first month).

A new rubric dedicated to the workflow in the creative industries. In the “Team” section, we talk about how many people are needed to create a particular product (film, TV show, website, etc.), what are their responsibilities and whether they can be replaced by someone.

In this material, the headings are the composition of the animation studio team. We find out without which creative and technical specialists it is impossible to create animation, and the founders of Toondra studios and Max Sviridov's Plasticine Studio talk about their experience.

Hover over picture for more information

Screenwriter

responsible for the script of the cartoon, as in any other picture.

Director

the main person of the project, whose function is no less important than on a film project.

“In my opinion, it all depends on which studio we are talking about. There are studios, large and very small. For some, this is a business, others are just going to have fun.

If we talk about the minimum, then there are cases when one person is able to perform the whole range of works at a good level. But that doesn't happen often. The most common division into roles in the process is: screenwriter, director, animators, illustrators, sound engineer, announcers.

It is also important which animation technique we are talking about: it’s one thing, if we are talking, for example, about a flash, it’s easier to do everything by yourself, and in the case of three-dimensional animation, there is almost always a division of labor: everyone is assigned their own role in the process. Although I know people who can do everything completely cool in 3D without anyone's help. But this rarely happens, because the volume of work is very large, and it is easier to focus on one part of it. Plus, the speed at which work is completed, of course, depends on the number of people.

It often happens that the animator does everything himself, but when his order flow increases, he organizes his team, and this is where it all starts. The more work, the larger the team. It often happens that people are assembled for a specific project, and then they disperse. For example, under some kind of animated series or feature film.

I myself don't like the big, long projects that studios tend to get their hands on. Of course, they bring a stable income, but at the same time endless routine and fuss. "

Animator

as a rule, not one, but several, depending on the project. The specific division of cartoonists depends on the type of cartoon (drawn, plasticine, puppet, 3D, etc.).

Illustrator

creates storyboards, titles, etc.

“For a full-fledged animation studio, at least 16 people are required.

Responsibilities are distributed as follows: stage director, screenwriter, production designer, composer, voice actors, animators (drawers, phasers, mierdovschiki), animated half-phase layout designer, motion cinematographer, cinematographer, sound engineer, administrator, lighting designer ...

People who work in an animation studio often combine several functions: for example, a production designer can also be a phase shifter, and a cameraman can be a lighting designer. But whatever one may say, the minimum number of people for a normally functioning animation studio is 16 ”.
