Forgiveness Sunday- the last day before Lent.

On this day, all Orthodox Christians ask each other for forgiveness - in order to begin fasting with a good soul, to focus on spiritual life with a pure heart, to celebrate Easter - the day of the Resurrection of Christ. On this day, fast food is consumed for the last time.

“On this day, according to the custom established in ancient times, having bowed to each other from the depths of our hearts, Orthodox mutual insults and sins are forgiven. This is necessary for us if we want to live with the Lord both while on earth and when we move into eternal life. We are all We wish for ourselves eternal salvation. But this is possible only if there are no resentments in our hearts; there is no mutual condemnation or hostility.

It is possible only when there is peace in our hearts - this is a precious sacred good that Christ the Savior gives us.

But for this we need to forgive those who have offended us, and ask for forgiveness from those whom we have voluntarily or unwittingly offended. Otherwise, all our efforts in the upcoming post will be in vain. The Lord will not accept our numerous prostrations to the ground if resentment towards our brother, evil and ill will towards our neighbors continue to live in our hearts." (Archim. John Krestyankin)

Quotes

Everyone who wants to begin the feat of fasting and prayer,
everyone who wants to reap the fruits of their repentance,
hear the Word of God, hear the covenant of God:
Forgive your neighbors for their sins against you.

Are you fasting? Appease the one you have offended
Never envy your brother, never hate anyone.

If you, a person, do not forgive everyone
sinned against you, then do not bother yourself
fasting and prayer... God will not accept you.

Hello, friends.

Have you had time to enjoy pancakes on Maslenitsa? Because the holiday is coming to an end, it’s already Friday, there are only a couple of days left. Personally, I haven’t eaten enough of them yet =) But oh well, this article is not about Maslenitsa, or rather, not really about it.

The fact is that the last day of Maslenitsa is called Forgiveness Sunday, and this is not easy. It is about Forgiveness Sunday that I want to talk about today. About the traditions of this holiday, its history. Find out what date it is celebrated in 2018, 2019, 2020 and so on, and, most importantly, figure out how to correctly ask for forgiveness and respond to those who ask us for it.

* By the way, you may be interested in a full article about the traditions and customs of Maslenitsa. Everything is collected there: the history of the holiday, interesting facts, and so on.

Now let's return to Forgiveness Sunday.

What date to celebrate

Friends, this holiday is moving - it does not have a specific date. Forgiveness Sunday falls on a different day every year. Since this Christian holiday is part of Maslenitsa week, it is counted in the same way as the entire Maslenitsa - from Easter. But you don’t have to rack your brains, but simply remember that Forgiveness Sunday is the last Sunday before Lent and the day that ends Cheese Week (Maslenitsa).

As I already said in one of my articles, the dates of Easter have been calculated for many years in advance, so it will not be difficult to find out what date of a particular year Forgiveness Sunday will be celebrated.

History, meaning and names of the holiday

The holiday of Forgiveness Sunday (or Raw Food Week, Week of Adam's Exile, Raw Food, Forgiveness Day) is as old as Christianity itself. According to biblical history, it has its roots in the desert lands of Ancient Egypt, where Christian hermits made their Lenten journeys.

Sacred texts say that the monks went to the desert (one by one, of course) to spend almost 40 days of Lent there in prayer. This was done in order to strengthen their feat of prayer and prepare for one of the most revered holidays by Christians - Easter.

The desert is an environment hostile to humans: temperature changes from terrible heat to extreme cold, restrictions on water and food, wild animals. It is not easy to survive in such conditions, and the monks, going on their sacred campaign, understood this very well. Therefore, going on such a dangerous journey, they asked everyone for forgiveness for all voluntary and involuntary offenses, and, of course, they themselves forgave everyone, because another opportunity might not have presented itself, and one should appear before God with a pure soul and conscience.

Also, it is worth noting that Anothername of Forgiveness Sunday -A weekAdam's exile. Everyone probably knows this biblical legend about the expulsion of the first people from Paradise. But few people know that they were expelled not for sin at all, but because they refused to admit what they had done and repent. Oh, this human pride and stubbornness.

Hence the fundamental lines in the Holy Scriptures that those who do not ask forgiveness from their neighbors and do not repent themselves cannot count on the Kingdom of God after death.

The third name of Forgiveness Sunday is Syropustnaya Week (Syropust). This means that pious Christians complete their preparations for Lent and stop eating all meats. And this Sunday is the last day for eating fish, butter, milk, eggs, and so on; there is a taboo on them until Easter.

But it is worth noting that on the last day of Maslenitsa, eating meat and meat products, in accordance with Christian tradition, is not accepted.

Forgiveness Sunday: traditions

Like any ancient holiday, Forgiveness Sunday has its own traditions that have been “infused” for centuries. The most important thing, of course, is to ask for forgiveness from everyone we might have offended, and we should have asked for forgiveness not from the very morning, but from sunset until complete darkness.

In the old days in Rus', people always went to church, to relatives, neighbors and other acquaintances, to the cemetery, in order to ask for forgiveness. Along the way, even complete strangers asked for forgiveness; this was the norm.

And, of course, it was necessary to forgive the offenders ourselves, always sincerely, otherwise everything loses its meaning.

An interesting fact: on such a great holiday, even the Old Russian princes concluded a temporary truce, and some warriors did not take up arms at all.

But these are not all traditions:

  1. Traditionally, on Forgiveness Sunday, churches hold a festive service - they read the Gospel of Matthew, which talks about forgiveness.
  2. Afterwards comes the so-called Rite of Forgiveness - a special procedure for the clergy to repent before the parishioners.
  3. They don’t forget to talk about the first people - Adam and Eve, who were expelled from Paradise for narcissism and arrogance, in order to remind us of how dangerous these qualities are.
  4. On the eve of fasting, all fast foods are eaten; this is called fasting. Moreover, even the Sunday meal had its own traditions:

      from the very morning the whole family gathered at the parents' house and began their day by eating pancakes;

      it was customary to eat seven times during the day (according to the number of weeks in Lent);

      they sat down to dinner late in the evening, at a table covered with a white tablecloth;

      at the end of the meal, nothing was removed from the table, but everything was covered with a beautiful tablecloth (white or embroidered), with a sheepskin on top, and left until the morning, then everything was removed, and the remaining food was given to the animals (this was done in order to protect the house from quarrels );

      They hardly drank alcohol.

  5. On Forgiveness Sunday, one should visit the bathhouse in order to enter Lent clean, not only in soul, but also in body.
  6. It was customary to fall asleep before midnight, no sex, in general, it was ideal for the husband and wife to lie down separately.
  7. For children under seven years of age, some tasty treat (apple, candy, etc.) was placed under the pillow so that the year would be satisfying.
  8. Women who wanted to get pregnant stood in front of the window and turned to heaven and their ancestors with the words: “Ancestors, forgive me and help me,” then crossed themselves three times and went to bed. This ritual helped to conceive a child faster.
  9. And those who wanted to ask for forgiveness from their deceased ancestors went to the cemetery before sunset, put pancakes on the grave, bowed on all four sides, and asked the deceased for forgiveness.
  10. They guessed by the pancakes and their fillings.
  11. Someone, in addition to fortune telling, was engaged in other magical practices. You can still find all sorts of conspiracies for this day on the Internet.
  12. It happened that people baked for each other special rye bread sprinkled with sugar - ukrukh.

Christianity and paganism

Friends, Forgiveness Sunday is the last day of Maslenitsa, and Maslenitsa is a purely pagan holiday.

Because of such a close interweaving of beliefs, the result was a vigorous mixture of traditions. There are completely incompatible things nearby - visiting a temple and fortune telling, for example.

Let me remind you, the Orthodox Church sharply negative looks at fortune telling and other similar activities.

Even noisy and cheerful festivities with the burning of effigy on the last day of Maslenitsa are condemned, not to mention any removal of curses and love spells.

At its core, Forgiveness Sunday is a Christian holiday, and if we celebrate it, then in accordance with Christian traditions.

However, everyone chooses what is closest to them.

How to ask for forgiveness on Forgiveness Sunday

The main meaning of this action is sincere repentance. You need to ask for forgiveness with your soul, from a pure heart, from absolutely everyone, without even feeling guilty. And don’t copy a poem or picture from the Internet, sending them for show to your interlocutor, because that’s the custom.

Usually, when they ask for forgiveness on this day, they say: “Forgive me if I am guilty of something to you.” If there is any specific fault, then it is worth voicing it: “Forgive me for such and such.”

There are several ways to answer:

  1. God forgive me, forgive me;
  2. God will forgive and I forgive.

You need to say “sorry” or “excuse me,” but not “sorry.” These are very different concepts:

    In the first case, the person seems to admit his guilt and promises to improve. This is precisely what is revered in the Bible;

In the second case, the person asks to “take him out of his guilt” and pretends that he is not guilty at all.

That's probably all. See you again, friends.

P.S. I remembered here while I was writing: in Germany there is a holiday - the Day of Repentance and Prayer, and so it reminds me of Forgiveness Sunday. I don’t know why, they are different, but nevertheless.

First of all, the Orthodox holiday Forgiveness Sunday is a special day that prepares each of us for Lent; in addition, it is a deep and important day, endowed with great meaning and significance. Therefore, each of us should know when Forgiveness Sunday will be celebrated in 2018, what history this event contains, and most importantly, how to conduct it correctly in order to enter Lent with a clear soul and conscience.

What date will Forgiveness Sunday be in 2018?

Forgiveness Sunday is celebrated on, therefore it does not have a fixed date and “floats” from year to year on different dates, but In 2018, Forgiveness Sunday falls on February 18.

History and essence of the holiday

It should be noted that this holiday has very ancient roots. It is believed that the ancient Greeks first started the tradition of asking for forgiveness from all people. Their clergy at a certain period of time secluded themselves: they went into the desert and spent several months there to pray, strengthen their spirit and body, and test their strength. Naturally, many of them simply did not return. Before leaving for the desert, the priests asked forgiveness from their acquaintances, because they were afraid of never seeing them again. This tradition was adopted in Rus', and with the passage of time, Forgiveness Sunday appeared in Orthodox culture.

The second name of the holiday is “Adam’s Exile.” On this day, a special mass is celebrated in churches, in which the clergy recall the original sin of humanity and about how important it is to forgive each other. After all, if you cleanse yourself of the vice of eternal insults, after death heaven will accept a rebellious soul, cleansed of nasty carnal ailments.

Traditions of celebrating Forgiveness Sunday

There is no single recipe for everyone on how best to spend this day, because each of us is individual and must carry out this internal work on our own. The main rule of Forgiveness Sunday is to realize your mistakes, figure out what exactly offends you and how you could affect the feelings of others and sincerely repent of it.

Since ancient times, there has been a tradition according to which it is customary to ask forgiveness first to those who are older: parents from children, mentors from students, managers from subordinates.
On this holiday, you must ask for forgiveness from all relatives, friends, neighbors and even strangers. Previously, people even visited cemeteries on this day to ask for forgiveness.

Forgiveness Sunday is the last day before Lent. On this day, all Orthodox Christians ask each other for forgiveness - in order to begin fasting with a good soul, focus on spiritual life and meet Easter - the day of the Resurrection of Christ - with a pure heart.

When is Forgiveness Sunday in 2019, what date does the holiday fall on, the traditions and history of this event, as well as how to ask for forgiveness correctly and what you need to answer - we’ll figure it out together, and our article will help you understand what the essence of this church holiday Forgiveness Sunday is .

On Forgiveness Sunday, March 10, 2019, we should sit and reflect on the fact that not all of our actions may be pleasant and pleasing to another person and the Lord.

After all, even bad thoughts about someone or something is, in fact, a sinful act. If we consider that envy, anger, foul language, gluttony are also included in the list of bad feelings and emotions, then each of us should think about it. Over the course of a whole year, a lot of such bad emotions can accumulate in a person’s soul.

And if we take into account the fact that we are not always guided by common sense, then our actions are not always correct, especially those actions that were committed under the influence of negative emotions.

Therefore, it is very important to cleanse your soul from burdensome sins at least once a year. How can we contribute to this? On Forgiveness Sunday, you should ask for forgiveness from everyone, even if it seems that there is absolutely nothing to ask for forgiveness from someone for.

You cannot ignore your enemies and adversaries; you should also ask for forgiveness from them. At the end of the day, your soul will feel much lighter.

Asked Sunday in 2019 falls on March 10th. The Lord sees right through us, and sees that sometimes a person, without intending to, can cause harm to someone, offend him. This is why such a day as Forgiveness Sunday was created.

In addition to the fact that on this day one must ask for forgiveness, one must also accept forgiveness from others who have also repented. All words of forgiveness heard should certainly be accepted. Also on this day you should not allow evil thoughts, quarrels and offense.

And considering that Maslenitsa is just outside the window, who wants to ruin the last day of festivities and waste time on something evil instead of rejoicing?

Forgiveness Sunday: the history of the holiday

The last day of Maslenitsa week is Forgiveness Sunday. People also called it farewell, tselovalnik, Forgiveness day, raw food (the last time before fasting one is allowed to eat cheese, butter and eggs).

Forgiveness Sunday is the first step on the path to Lent. Christians on this day ask each other for forgiveness of sins and grievances. This is the day of reconciliation between warring parties.

In churches they read the Gospel and the Sermon on the Mount, which talks about forgiveness of offenses to neighbors. During the liturgy, priests call on believers to forgive and ask for forgiveness from loved ones and friends.

After evening services in churches, parishioners and clergy ask each other for forgiveness in order to enter Lent with a pure soul.

The rector of the temple addresses the brethren and common people with the words: “Bless, holy fathers and brethren, and forgive me, a sinner, for everything I have sinned this day in deed, word, thought and all my feelings.”

From century to century, according to tradition, on this day children bowed at the feet of their parents. The enemies went to their opponents and asked them for reconciliation. People went to the cemetery, commemorated the dead, and left pancakes on the graves.

Even gentlemen and wealthy citizens did not consider it a shame to ask forgiveness from their servants. In pre-revolutionary Russia, the tsar toured the troops and asked for forgiveness from the soldiers, then visited monasteries, where he asked for forgiveness from the brethren and bishops.

This is a day for good deeds - charitable donations and debt remission.

Where did the custom come from? On this day, believers remember the expulsion of Adam and Eve from paradise for disobedience and intemperance. We remember that we are all exiles and we can find what we have lost through repentance, abstinence and prayer.

The rite of forgiveness traces its history back to Egyptian monks. Before the onset of Lent, in order to strengthen the feat of prayer, they dispersed through the desert for the entire forty days of fasting.

Many never returned: they died of hunger or were torn to pieces by wild animals. Therefore, when they separated, the monks forgave each other’s offenses, as before death.

What to do on Forgiveness Sunday

We all, voluntarily or unwittingly, commit various major and minor sins - we swear (even if quite rightly!) over prices that are growing every day.

Sometimes we argue in lines, we grumble when someone steps on our feet on a crowded bus, or when a neighbor suddenly decides to hammer a hanger nail into the wall on Sunday morning.

You never know when and who we have offended over the past year with a deed or a carelessly dropped word! It is for all this that we must ask for forgiveness, not formally, of course, but quite consciously and try not to repeat these mistakes in the future (we won’t apologize for the same thing every time). If everyone does this from the bottom of their hearts, our lives will definitely become better.

  • Asking for forgiveness from loved ones

When you wake up in the morning, without delay, ask for forgiveness for all the grievances caused from your household. You need to ask for forgiveness sincerely, regretting the pain caused to your loved one.

If it is difficult to ask for forgiveness, you can first imagine yourself in the place of the offended person and feel for yourself how bad it was for him.

Then you will definitely regret and repent of your evil deed. The request for forgiveness will happen as if by itself. Families did not go to bed without making peace with each other.

  • Asking forgiveness from the dead

On this day, it is customary to come to the graves of relatives and friends to ask for forgiveness from those with whom it is no longer possible to see. We often regret that we offended a person during his lifetime. On this day there is an opportunity to ask for forgiveness and remove the burden from your soul.

  • Forgive those who ask

On Forgiveness Sunday, we need to sincerely forgive those who ask us to do so. And even those who cannot or do not want to ask us for forgiveness. Simply, forgive all the accumulated grievances, thinking that our offenders are just as wrong as we ourselves and their soul suffers from this.

The main thing for a person on Forgiveness Sunday is sincere repentance of the evil act committed towards another person and forgiveness of their offenders.

After all, we all ask the Lord for forgiveness of our sins. Just as we forgive others, so the Lord will forgive us. Forgiving others means approaching Lent with a pure soul and preparing spiritually.

  • Visit the temple

In churches during the Liturgy they read the biblical story about Adam and Eve, remembering the fall of our first parents and their expulsion from Paradise. The Gospel narrative is also read in churches, where Jesus Christ explains the words of the prayer Our Father, “and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

The Lord himself shows us the way to the Kingdom of God - to renounce evil grievances, to love and forgive each other.

How to ask for forgiveness and what to answer

The last day of Maslenitsa is the last Sunday before Lent. Therefore, on this day they celebrate Forgiveness Sunday, which, according to the priests, helps people cleanse themselves before the test of the spirit. On this day, it is customary to ask for forgiveness and forgive your offenders.

And if you are asked for forgiveness, it is customary to answer: “God will forgive.”

According to tradition, on this day you cannot quarrel with anyone. And if any conflict arises, it must be resolved immediately. And even more so, you can’t fall asleep in a quarrel and with thoughts that are heavy because of it.

By the way, in Rus' even the tsar himself asked for forgiveness from his servants and the people!

It is customary to ask for forgiveness on Forgiveness Sunday not only from the living, but also from the dead, visiting their graves. After all, sometimes a heavy burden remains on the soul when a person is no longer alive, and there is no longer any opportunity to ask for his forgiveness.

Rituals for Forgiveness Sunday

If you are present at the mass burning of the Maslenitsa effigy, then stand closer to the fire so that you break out in sweat, and wipe the sweat from your face with a handkerchief. Say the following words to yourself: Run away from me, hunger and cold go away, fire, rise, spring, begin. What burns will not be, but I can walk in gold. Amen."

Prayer for Forgiveness Sunday

Hope to all the ends of the earth, Most Pure Virgin, Lady Theotokos, our consolation! Do not disdain us sinners, for we trust in Your mercy: extinguish the sinful flame burning in us and water our parched hearts with repentance, cleanse our minds from sinful thoughts, accept prayers from the soul and heart with sighs offered to You.

Be an intercessor for us to Your Son and God, and turn away His anger with Your Mother’s prayers. Heal mental and physical ulcers, O Lord Lady, quench the illnesses of the soul and body, comfort the storm of evil attacks of the enemy, take away the burden of our sins, and do not leave us to perish until the end, and comfort our broken hearts with sorrow. Let us glorify Thee until our last breath.”

Quit smoking ritual

  1. In the evening, smoke your last cigarette and place the empty cigarette pack on the table next to your bed. Place a note on the packet: “I quit smoking.” On top is an empty matchbox. Now go to bed. They say that in the morning there will be no trace of cravings for smoking.
  2. In the square where the effigy is burned, you need to walk around the effigy three times and throw your pack of cigarettes into the fire, saying: “I burn tobacco, I close myself off from smoking, I open myself to a new life.
Life without tobacco is my dear!”

Rituals for financial well-being

On the Monday following the last day of Maslenitsa - Forgiveness Sunday - go to the place where the festivities took place. Walk around, looking carefully: you need to find any coin, even a penny. Raising it with your left hand, say the spell:

“I walked (walked) and found (found)
As I, (state your name), walked (went) to this money, so that the money would come to me.
Just as many people were here today in honor of Holy Maslenitsa, so I would always have a lot of money.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Now, and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen".

Keep the charmed coin throughout the year, until the next first Monday after Maslenitsa. This talisman will attract money to you and protect you from financial failures. After the specified period, “lose” your spent money in the same place where you picked it up.

Conspiracy to fulfill a wish for Forgiveness Sunday

On Forgiveness Sunday, you need to go to bed before sunset, but first read the following spell: “Light up a bright star in the sky, to the joy of the entire baptized world, light up with unquenchable fire for the joy of the Orthodox! Look into the star and into my house, into the house of the servant of God (your name), illuminate my house with your unquenchable light, hear my desire (say a desire) and help me fulfill it! Amen!". The plot must be read three times, making the sign of the cross each time.

Cleaning up if you swore on Forgiveness Sunday

On Forgiveness Sunday, you should never quarrel with anyone. To avoid trouble, first read the prayer, and then a special conspiracy.

How do you feel about the tradition of asking for forgiveness on the last Sunday before Lent? And what do you think to yourself when those who have offended you ask you for forgiveness?
-God will forgive! Is this forgiveness or not? Did you forgive or did you invite God to deal with your offender himself?

Everyone deserves forgiveness, especially on such a bright holiday as Forgiveness Sunday. On this day, all people have a chance to forgive the grievances of long-ago days, as well as repent and make peace with those who were offended in the past.

The strictest of the multi-day fasts - Great Lent - begins precisely with Forgiveness Sunday. This is the first step towards spiritual cleansing, and it is on this day that all people have a chance to ask each other for forgiveness for all the caustic words and bitter deeds. This is a wonderful way to start your post on a good note. After all, when you are pure in soul, nothing prevents you from focusing on your spiritual life.

The essence of Forgiveness Sunday

Every day, without knowing it, we insult, oppress and offend innocent people. This is how the world works, and it is not our fault, because every person in his life has often found himself in the place of the offended. Forgiveness Sunday is a gift for everyone who has sinned, offended a loved one, or committed a terrible act. The meaning of this holiday is that this day is considered a time of forgiveness.

The origin of the festival dates back to ancient times. According to historical reports, before the onset of Lent, Egyptian monks dispersed through the desert to completely devote themselves to prayers and unity with the Lord. Since dangers abound in the desert around them, their meeting before Lent could always be the last, and the monks asked each other for forgiveness as if they were on their deathbeds. Over time, this became a habit and became a tradition for all Christians.

The Lord himself said: “Forgive your debtors,” and this is perhaps the best thing you can do - forgive those who have offended you. It doesn’t matter what kind of pain you were hurt in the past, what matters is the act of forgiveness itself. God taught us that the ability to forgive contains the truth that allows an ordinary person to become equal with the Lord.

Forgiveness Sunday in 2018

Every year on the last Sunday before Lent, people perform the rite of forgiveness in memory of the Son of God. In 2018, Forgiveness Sunday will be celebrated 18th of Febuary. This is not a simple tradition, but the main rule of any believer, so take this very seriously. You cannot thoughtlessly say words of forgiveness if deep in your soul you still have not been able to come to terms with the pain caused by people. You need to be honest with yourself and with the Lord.

Repentance becomes a real ritual that is carried out everywhere. In every church, in every family and in every soul on this day, people try to throw off a heavy burden - to receive forgiveness from everyone they have offended, to forgive themselves, and most importantly - to forgive themselves. It is believed that this is the only way to start Lent correctly.

Of course, many people find it difficult to forgive another person, especially if they have suffered too much pain in the past. However, everyone can forgive, and the only thing you must remember is that the pain of resentment does not go away without a trace. Mental pain is hundreds of times stronger than physical pain. This is absolutely normal. But to forgive does not at all mean to get rid of it; to forgive is to renounce revenge, retribution, and evil thoughts about the life of another person. Forgiving your offender means wishing him a happy life, even if it hurts you unbearably.

He called upon the Almighty to forgive us even our enemies, to whom the words of forgiveness are alien. No one says that forgiving is easy, but learning to do so will bring out the best in you. You can change your life, making it clean, bright and happy. We wish you peace in your soul. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Good luck in everything, and don't forget to press the buttons and
