Very soon Thief 4 will be released, and this was a great reason for me to write a small article.
In our time, games made from books are not uncommon, just remember the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. But what about books whose main characters are based on computer game characters?

A bit of history. Return of the thief.

In 2004, a charismatic and cunning thief wandered through the alleys of a certain City, robbed the rich and safely hidden from prying eyes. Known as Garrett, the protagonist of the third part of the computer game Thief (Thief: Deadly Shadows) returns to our screens nine years later. In the fourth part of the franchise, he is again ready to explore with the player the homes of wealthy citizens and dissolute aristocracy in the gloomy atmosphere of dark alleys. Here, on the streets, a plague is raging, and someone with the nickname Baron managed to seize all power.

The world of the new Thief maintained in the atmosphere of previous games in the series. It's dark, but certainly beautiful. Shrouded in mystery and thick fog, fraught with danger and considerable profit, engulfed in chaos, it is an ideal place for a thief.

The first part at one time became a cult game, giving rise not only to a whole series of games, but in fact became the progenitor of the genre, becoming the grandmother of the well-known Dishonored, in view of which it will be possible to see a lot of similarities between both games. I'm pretty sure Dishonored fans will love this new one with all their hearts. Trief.

On the pages of books.

Due to the specific activities of the protagonist, most of his past is shrouded in darkness and is not revealed to the players, allowing you to guess for yourself what could happen to the master thief before he appears before the player. For those who would like to know more about Garret himself, I can offer an alternative - read the writer's books A. Pekhova.

The trilogy is called "Chronicles of Siala" and tells us ... About the best of thieves named Garrett. And although in one of the interviews the writer himself seems to deny the involvement of the protagonist of the series of games in his books, I can assume that he is disingenuous. Firstly, the main character is indeed a thief, his name is indeed Garrett, and the fate of his youth is strikingly similar to what little the developers revealed about the thief's past in the first part of the franchise.

What do we know about the main character?

The game Thief:The Dark Project(1998) begins with a story about a street kid who lives in a big city and trades in petty pickpocketing. As you may have guessed, the boy's name was
Garrett. Once he tried to get into the pocket of a certain gentleman, and was immediately caught. The master turns out to be a member of the Secret Order, whose henchmen, hiding in the shadows, are not seen by ordinary people in the crowd. Having seen talent in young Garrett, he invited him to join the Order in order to teach him how to use the gift (everything that we have in the game, in fact, the same stealth, gave us just this very Order), and the little thief agrees. However, after completing the training, Garrett will leave the Order.

The protagonist, who has become an adult, brings a lot of problems to the head of the Thieves Guild, and all attempts to persuade Garrett to join the criminal structure and pay interest on each "case" are unsuccessful. Assassins are sent for Garrett, but he, having managed to avoid death, visits the mansion of authority himself. Well, after that we get our first
"thieves" task.

It's funny, but the story of Garret Shadow from Pekhov's books, almost copies the story of Garrett from the game series. As a boy, he really gets into the pocket of a certain person, who later turned out to be a member of not only the mysterious Order, but the Guild of Thieves, who, having seen the talent in the boy (this time thieves), takes him under his wing and teaches him everything he needs to know any self-respecting thief. The grown-up Garret still annoys the leader of the Thieves Guild by refusing to pay a percentage of his work in the same way, for which hired killers are still sent to him, who, as you already understood, could not kill our thief.

I do not want to reveal the whole plot of Pekhov's wonderful trilogy, leaving you to enjoy the unexpected plot twists, but I want to note that such a similarity in the beginnings of both epics is not the only one. So, throughout the series of games you can
notice that Garret is, if not a believer in God, then certainly a believer in luck, a person. So in Garret's book, the Shadow refers to the patron god of thieves Sagoth with strict spiritual "obedience", because it is believed that the thief who took the Order cannot refuse it and run away, because then his patron will turn away and successful thefts can no longer be seen. To your surprise, there may be much more coincidences than I could reveal in this text, but in order not to tire the reader with unnecessary facts, I can suggest that you look for them yourself.

Character Creation:

Guide to GW2

In Guild Wars 2, the passage of a personal story (epic) is incredibly interesting.

The plot of a personal story is unique for each character. Its development will begin with the character creation process. Which way this story goes will depend only on your decisions. You can call friends for help, but they will not be able to change the plot.

The film "The Thief" in the 90s became one of the highest-grossing films that were successful both in Russia and abroad. Moreover, the picture of Pavel Chukhrai, who recently celebrated his 71st birthday, was nominated for an Oscar! Let's take a trip to the film set of the movie hit.

Katerina Rednikova and Vladimir Mashkov in the film *The Thief*, 1997

The thief performed by Vladimir Mashkov turned out to be such a charming character that the director often heard accusations against him: they say that his father made a “ballad about a soldier”, and he himself made a “ballad about a thief”. His main character was indeed the exact opposite of the characters from his father's films Ballad of a Soldier and Clear Sky. However, the director did not set himself the task of romanticizing the image of a thief - on the contrary, he tried to convey the idea that even behind an attractive appearance and an officer's uniform, an ordinary swindler can be hidden, because of which the fate of a child is crumbling. After all, a handsome military man who presented himself as a retired tank officer actually turns out to be an ordinary thief who needs his family primarily for cover.

Frame from the film *The Thief*, 1997

The plot of the film is not entirely fictional. The director said: “Somewhere in the 60s, they told me that there was such a thief who dressed in military uniform, went from apartment to apartment with a woman and a child, got a job, and they didn’t ask him for documents, because he was in military uniform, it seems that the army was trusted at that time ... ".

Nevertheless, Pavel Chukhrai saw the main character of his painting not as a charismatic thief, but as a little boy who had lost his father and was desperately trying to find him in a stranger. The director admitted: “The Thief” is my early childhood, memories that I wanted to materialize on the screen. It's not about the plot, but rather about the atmosphere of that time ... I shot a ballad about my peer - about a boy. It is he who is the main character of the picture, and not at all Tolyan performed by Mashkov. And if someone does not understand this, it means that something did not work out for me. Of course, I also love this character - a thief ... Mashkov's hero is a hundred times better than any politician. There is no cynicism in him. I don't know anything worse than cynicism. He's just a big man. Somewhere steal, and someone will give. There is a lot of artistry in it. Charm. He still loves them - both mother and boy.

Vladimir Mashkov in the movie *The Thief*

According to the director, in this film he tried to figure out what the people who were in power in the 1990s were like - what shaped them, what their childhood was like, where their fears and weaknesses come from. As a result, the film was inspired not only by nostalgia for one's own childhood, but also by a philosophical reflection on fatherlessness as the main misfortune of the post-war generation, about where the cult of violence and cruelty came from in Russia as a result, and that several generations were just as afraid of They adored the Tyrant Leader, like this boy of his father, and then they debunked him in the same way. As the newspapers wrote, "The Thief" tells about stolen childhood and lost illusions, about the heredity of violence and how millions of children were left without loved ones to keep them from the abyss.

The main character for the role of a boy was searched for in schools and kindergartens - the director wanted to see on the screen the maximum immediacy, sincerity and touchingness. Misha Filipchuk was found in an ordinary school near Moscow. Chukhrai was worried about how he would cope with his task and how free he would feel on the set - after all, this was his first film work. The result exceeded all expectations. “I just realized that this guy is just a godsend for me.

And we all adored him on the set, because he is a very cheerful guy, with all the breadth of his possibilities as a dramatic actor, he is very cheerful, he completely hounded us with all sorts of school jokes. Moreover, it was interesting: he grew up very quickly on the site ... ”, the director said. Misha starred in three more films in 1997-1998, but he did not connect his life with cinema - after school he entered the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Yaroslavl was chosen as the location for filming - it was there in the barracks, in the area of the Krasny Perekop factory, that the heroes of the film rent a room. Then, when they move according to the plot, the shooting actually continues in the same Yaroslavl, on Sovetskaya Street. The director managed to masterfully recreate the post-war unsettled life of communal apartments.

The film "The Thief" was appreciated both in Russia and abroad: in 1998 it was nominated for an Oscar as "Best Foreign Language Film", for the Golden Globe Award in the category "Best Foreign Language Film", "Phoenix" in the category "Best European Film", received a special jury prize at the IFF in Venice and several awards at the Nika-1998 festival. The Thief was a great success at the American box office - however, foreign producers asked the director to change the ending of the film, making it more optimistic. Pavel Chukhrai is one of the few Russian directors whose name is widely known to the Western public.

The content of this section and the second one, about the atmosphere of Germany in the 1930s-1940s in The book Thief, will echo from time to time, since the story of the Book Thief Markus Zusak in many ways fascinates precisely by deep immersion. Main events books The book thief take place in the fictional German town of Melning, near Munich. The main characters are ordinary people, a family, and their adopted daughter. Elderly Hans Hubermann, his wife and little Liesel Meminger live a modest life in their unremarkable home. It is curious that if we move from the metaphorical and philosophical content of the book by Mark Zusak book thief to the private, the story of The book thief can be called everyday. Most of the events relate to the everyday life of a German family before and during the Second World War. Problems of stolen apples, mother's tasteless stew, playing the accordion, linen hanging on the street, ice-cold water in the river in winter, an unexpected extraneous knock on the door. Thus, one should not expect events of a European or national German scale. The book thief plays with familiar themes in an interesting manner that quickly captivates the reader.

Liesel Meminger. The main character of the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. The first acquaintance with the girl occurs when she is only nine. Already at that age, through her image, a semblance of a critical look at the then events in Germany is transmitted. Far from an example of angelic behavior, Liesel Meminger simultaneously appreciates the adult life that surrounds her and more global events of a political and social scale. It turns out such a simplified version of Jean Louise from. Liesel- a blonde with dark brown eyes, however, contrasting behavior with the image of an Aryan teenage girl. It is to her that the very name of the novel The Thief of Books or book thief. Liesel Meminger she has an irresistible craving for reading, for written words - she saves books from the ashes of literary burnings, steals publications from her personal library.

Hans Hubermann and Rosa Huberman. Although throughout almost the entire book The Book Thief, one gets the impression that the rough addition of Rose only scolds her husband and adopted daughter, calling her Pig, the image has a second bottom, which will be interesting to piece together during re-reading. As for Hans Hubermann, this is one of the most endearing male characters in modern popular literature and the highlight of The Book Thief (played by Geoffrey Rush). The veteran of the First World War sets off the events that take place on the home and military fronts of the now Second World War. Hans Hubermann immediately takes care of the young adopted daughter Liesel Meminger. They read together, share secrets, dream, withstand the attacks of the mother of the family with a smile. Hans Hubermann in Makurs Zusak's The Book Thief is an anti-war image of an accordion-playing artist.

Rudy Steiner . Through this same age Liesel Meminger, a boy from the same Himmel-Straße, author Markus Zusak continues to build a line of youth in his text of the book The Book Thief. The book thief draws a painful line between the childhood that most would like to see him and the one that the Third Reich has prepared for his younger generation. Rudy Steiner, like all the guys, joins the Hitler Youth and his adventures there are an important part of the story, a contrasting immersion in history. The boy Rudy Steiner is fascinated by the image of the American black running champion Jesse Owens, which creates a lot of problems for him among German teenagers.

Max Vandenburg. Another rather bright character in some places, without which, after reading, it is difficult to imagine the completeness of the presentation of the book The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Max Vandenburg is a young man of Jewish roots who is forced to hide in his native country for years, live in the Hubermanns' basement and are afraid of a knock on the door upstairs. He draws cartoons, writes stories that in a comical tone evaluate Nazi Germany, its leaders, the war in which all of Europe is drawn. He strikes up a sincere friendship with his younger Liesel Meminger, who becomes best friends. Max Vandenburg during those long months in the basement and shading the theme of racism in the book The Book Thief. Finally, at the end of the story, Liesel and Max got married.

Death is the image of the narrator in The Book Thief

In this case, the old aphorism seems to be relevant, that it is better to try it yourself than to hear it repeatedly. When you already turn to the text of the book The Book Thief ( The Book Thief), skipping through a few dozen pages, the idea of the author Markus Zusak seems definitely worthy of attention and in many ways original, at least in terms of presentation. The main characters of the people whose lives are discussed are Liesel Meminger, Hans Hubermann and Rosa Hubermann, the Jew Max Vandenburg, Rudi Steiner. However, another really important protagonist of The Book Thief, and perhaps the main one, is the narrator himself. Death or Angel of Death. The narrator of the story of The book thief really is, for many, an ominous image of Death. A significant part of the text of the novel by Markus Zusak focuses on the personal thoughts and past experiences of the narrator.

Among the many options for artistic framing Markus Zusak chose humanity, if I may say so. In his interpretation, Death is not the impersonal, emotionless observer that it, from a logical point of view, should be. In the book, the Book Thief is a male image that has a set of all our basic emotions, memory, critical and biased, depending on the topic, relationships. Such a character is closer to the reader, no matter how strange it may seem, and therefore you quickly imbue his thoughts with interest and even a certain amount of empathy. Death talks about his place in this world, about world wars, about tyrants, whom he unwittingly serves. She recalls various cases and circumstances of how she took people to the next world. Shares his outstanding opportunities to observe, remember, know. He even laughs at the image of a ghost with a skull and a sickle attributed to him. Some will get goosebumps at the thought of reading the thoughts of the Angel of Death over the 500+ pages of text in The Book Thief.

Historical background of Nazi Germany in The Book Thief

The image of the narrator of death, the heroes themselves books The book thief could, if desired, be inscribed in a variety of historical eras. Yet the author of the novel The Book Thief, Markus Zusak, took on the hitherto extremely popular theme of the Second World War. It was as if he set himself the goal of revealingly digging deeper than the vast majority of people go in their superficial ideas about this conflict, about Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. This is a purely artistic work, which is also seasoned with a good portion of mysticism and fantasy with Death in the narrators. Together with that, book thief book(The Book Thief) is quite accurate in recreating the historical era and geographical setting - just enough to give you an incentive to further elective education within the subject.

Each of the main characters of Markus Zusak's book The Book Thief and the film The Book Thief conveys the era and place of action in their own way. All characters live in the fictional town of Melning near Munich, which, however, has absorbed the features of an entire nation. Liesel Meminger and Rudi Steiner are German youth with an Aryan appearance who does not find themselves in the ideas of National Socialism, does not approve of the inner workings of youth organizations, with a smile and at times not childishly sharply assesses the political, economic and social situation in Germany. The spouses Hans Hubermann and Rosa, people in their sixties, were also not imbued with the new ideology - what is the long process of Hans' far-fetched entry into the party worth. Max Vandenburg is a collective image of oppressed citizens. He is a Jew who is forced to endure humiliation and hide in the basement. Even the narrator of The Book thief, Death himself shows his attitude towards Adolf Hitler, taking place in Germany and war-torn Europe.

Speaking more specifically about the plot of The book Thief, the story of the book The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (The Book Thief) is full of small things and large-scale allusions to the then situation in the country. Shares of burning books on the streets of the town in a fit of general ecstasy. The difficult everyday life of ordinary citizens, on the home front, in conditions of limited security and fear of constant bombing. Internal features of the training of young children in youth organizations. Social segregation, racial intolerance, which can be traced even to teenage associations in the local courtyard. Mobilization of the older generation for the needs of the people's militia towards the end of the war.

Film The Book Thief

The Book Thief, The Book Thief, The Book Thief are such adaptations of the original title The Book Thief, an adaptation of Mark Zusak's book. The American-German co-production film was released in 2013, seven years after the original book The Book Thief was released. In the film adaptation of The Book Thief, it was decided to keep the main narrator, namely the Angel of Death or simply Death, as one of the elements of the story of the Book Thief Markus Zusak. The author himself wrote about this during production on a personal blog, who co-authored the adapted script. movie The Book Thief.

For five main roles movie The Book Thief cast a multinational cast of actors, all five from different backgrounds. They were supposed to portray five Germans. For the lead role of Liesel Meminger, after a casting of 1000 applicants, a young thirteen-year-old Canadian actress Sophie Nelisse was chosen. The images of her adoptive parents, Hans and Rosa Huberman, were taken on the screens by Australian actor Geoffrey Rush and British actress Emily Watson. The role of Liesel Meminger's best friend, the young boy Rudy Steiner, was played by the German actor Nico Lirsch, and the German Jew Max Vandenburg was played by the American Ben Schnetzer.

Even after the casting of The Book Thief was determined, several amusing incidents took place. Sophie Nelisse, the lead actress, when she heard that she would play with actress Emily Watson, confused her with Emma Watson. The girl began to tell her friends that she would have to act with Hermione from Harry Potter. The mother of the young performer pointed out the mistake. As for Watson herself, she decided not to step out of her grumpy Rosa Huberman persona off the court. Once at the airport, she scolded an employee in such a tone, after which a small conflict arose. Geoffrey Rush considered playing with a child a test for himself, which is why at first he almost turned down the role of Hans Hubermann.

For obvious reasons, the volume of Markus Zusak's book The Book Thief was not included in the two-hour film The Book Thief, despite a fairly accurate rendering. The most significant component that went under the knife, obviously, was the narrator's monologues. In the movie The Book Thief Book Thief) there are some of them, for example, about serving the tyrants of history or about the quiet death of German subjects from night bombings. Yet in Markus Zusak's book there are entire sections where Death discusses the Second World War in his understanding, talks about visiting large German cities like Hamburg, which were on fire.
