During the exercises, a conscript soldier unsuccessfully threw an RGD-5 combat grenade so that it ended up in the zone of destruction of his colleagues. The officer instantly realized what had happened, pushed the confused soldier away, covered the grenade with himself and saved the soldier at the cost of his life.

Another story about a Hero:
"We celebrated him with a starry salute with the whole detachment ..."
On March 28, 2002, immediately after the Day of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, in the Chechen city of Argun, a serviceman of the 1st Red Banner Special Forces Regiment "Vityaz" Sergeant Sergey Burnaev died. For the “knights”, who did not have “two hundredths” after the first Chechen campaign, the death of a comrade-in-arms became a tragedy.

Ensign "Vityaz" Aleksey: "Despite the fact that Argun is a relatively small city, it can be cleaned for two weeks or a month without getting out of there. Still, even after that, barrels and ammunition will emerge there. They are so cleverly hidden. And emerge they will be in the hands of the “spirits.” During the day they are civilians with real passports, and at night two or three such “law-abiding” citizens will come to the cache, take weapons and fire at the military outpost or engineering intelligence ... It is very difficult to fight such militants. It's almost impossible to catch."

Officer "Vityaz" Eduard: "If it were not for Bury (Sergeant Sergei Burnaev. - Auth.), Our group would not have left. her to save the lives of others."

“Vityaz” officer, sapper Alexander: “In the basement of the school, we found several plastic bottles with radio stations sealed in plastic, tuned to the same frequency. A deadly toy. Put a box of nails next to it, go to the frequency and ... group. They just didn’t take into account the “spirits” that we have special devices on our armored personnel carriers that suppress such signals. Maybe because the school was surrounded by armored personnel carriers, we didn’t take off into the air, or maybe we were just lucky.”

In war, special forces are always ready to perform suddenly arising tasks. So it was this time. According to operational information, in one of the schools on the outskirts of Argun there was a cache with weapons and ammunition. It probably should have been guarded.

The task of the detachment was set in the morning. A few minutes to collect - and the column of armored personnel carriers "Vityaz" is already flying towards Argun. The specified area was found quickly: before that, the special forces had cleared this city more than once and therefore knew it well. Immediately put up a cordon and conducted reconnaissance. Everyone agreed that the “spirits” chose the ideal place for the cache: the school stood on a wasteland, several houses adjoined it, where it was possible to arrange firing points in such a way that they would shoot through everything around.

The school building was also fully suitable for organizing a cache: in order to go down to the reinforced concrete basement without windows, it was necessary to knock out two boarded up thick doors. Yes, and the basement of the school was built as if specifically to conduct military operations in it: the rooms, separated by reinforced concrete floors, do not directly join each other, but there are a lot of windows through which you can fire.

The school itself was quickly cleaned up: in the U-shaped three-story building, there was nothing but broken furniture and broken glass. It remained to clean the basement of the building. Before entering, the assault groups once again coordinated their actions. According to operational data, there could be "spirits" guarding the warehouse in the basement of the school. In addition, the FSB people also threw in "good" news: according to them, the basement of the school could be connected by underground passages to nearby houses. The detachment armored personnel carriers bristled with their trunks towards the windows of the five-story buildings, and the fighters of the cover groups dispersed near the houses.

They decided to throw several assault groups into the basement, which entered from different directions. We went blindly: there was no map, not even a drawing of the room. And he would not interfere: the darkness in the basement is impenetrable. The beams of powerful lanterns snatched out pieces of glass wool lying in the sandy dust, and small windows at head level were ideal loopholes for the defenders.

We moved very carefully. The lights were turned on only for a fraction of a second, in order to orient and find a passage to the next room. We looked at several rooms. The group, which included Sergeant Sergei Burnaev, immediately found a shell for installing a land mine in the first room, and from another room, the soldiers pulled out a disguised sports bag, in which they found a machine gun with a grenade launcher and an unloading vest with ammunition. Good catch to start. And ahead of the special forces, more than two-thirds of the basement was waiting.

The other two rooms turned out to be empty, but in the third one... As soon as the first soldier climbed in through the window, automatic bursts immediately rang out. Usually the "spirits" do not shine, they sit until the last, hoping that they will not be noticed. They were either stoned, or simply lost their nerves, because a lot of time had passed since the beginning of the operation, and the noise from the street in the basement was clearly audible. The room where the militants were sitting was bombarded with grenades by the "knights". About ten deadly gifts flew into the window. A grenade explosion in the basement is a terrible thing. It is almost impossible to take cover or hide - fragments ricochet off the walls. Immediately, in a fraction of a second after the last explosion, while the dust had not yet settled, the assault group, shining with lanterns, flew into the room and found two militants. They sat stunned and at that moment hardly understood what was happening. "Spirits" were dragged out into the street. One, seriously wounded, is not a tenant, and the second was caught by shrapnel in just a few places. He was still interesting to the operatives.

On the street near detachment armored personnel carriers and soldiers of the operational brigade of the Volga district of internal troops who had also arrived to reinforce, people began to walk around. Their interest was understandable - the hill of weapons near the combat vehicles kept growing: other search parties working in another wing of the school's basement also found weapons. The movement of the inhabitants at first did not arouse suspicion, but the houses were too close, from the upper floors of which the soldiers were visible at a glance. Yes, the faces of the same young people became familiar. Although they seemed to have everything in order with the documents.

And in the basement, in the room where the militants were sitting, the group found an impressive arsenal: several machine guns with grenade launchers, sleeping bags, cartridges, grenades and shots for a grenade launcher.

Carefully examining room after room and finding weapons, the search parties went towards each other. Doomed militants sat between them, ready for a deadly fight. The "spirits" knew that they would not come out of the cellar alive. Therefore, their task was reduced to a minimum - to take with them to the next world more military personnel. In his assault group, Sergeant Sergei Burnaev was ahead of everyone ...

For Sergei, this business trip was not the first. As a conscript soldier, he ended up in Chechnya for six months. Since childhood, he wanted to become a military man and dreamed of serving in the airborne troops or special forces. His dream came true - he ended up serving in the cradle of the special forces of the internal troops - the Vityaz special forces regiment. Despite the heavy physical exertion, Sergei liked to serve here. Shortly before the trip, he signed a contract for service in this unit, choosing one of the most combat units of the Vityaz as a place of service - a reconnaissance company, the team of which became his second family.

For further passage, the special forces had to climb into the window a little larger than the window. It was not easy for strong guys in bulletproof vests with weapons and ammunition to do this. Sergey was the first to climb through the window and began to cover the approach of the others. The fighters of the group went after him. Suddenly, out of the darkness at point-blank range, several bursts of machine-gun fire rang out. The militants were firing from a loophole in the wall. Immediately assessing the situation, the soldiers and officers of the "Vityaz" rushed to the saving reinforced concrete wall that separated them from the "spirits". In complete darkness, blinded and deafened by the flashes and explosions of grenades, the "knights" grouped up and entered the battle. In the heat of the fight, they did not notice that the officer was wounded, and blood was oozing from the eyebrow of one conscript sergeant - his forehead was hit by a shrapnel. Burnaev was closest to the militants. "Spirits" cut him off with fire and did not allow the rest to get close. At first, Sergei threw grenades into the opening, and when he was left alone for himself, he began to shoot from outstretched arms: enemy bullets did not give aim.

At this time, the group began to roll back - the ammunition was running out, and the wounded had to be pulled out. The elder shouted to Sergei to leave. They would have covered him, but Burnaev showed with signs that he would stay and cover the others himself. Perhaps he saw something that others did not see. The penultimate soldier, who ran up to the door that had been broken down by the armored personnel carrier, froze for a second: an explosion was heard in the depths of the basement. Immediately after this, another assault group from the Vityaz reconnaissance company burst into the basement. It was quiet in the dark. Only in the distance, on the right side of the basement, shots were heard. Two "spirits" went to meet the groups that were clearing the other wing. They were not allowed to leave. The scouts found the body of the sergeant and several militants killed by him. Sergei was lying facing the enemies, clutching a machine gun mangled by the explosion. Even in the last moment of his life, he thought about how to cover for the little brothers.

"Knights" said goodbye to Sergei Burnaev in Reutovo near Moscow. According to the tradition of the special forces, the coffin with the body of the sergeant was carried out in front of the personnel of the unit. After that, the officers of the Vityaz regiment accompanying Sergei took their son to his parents in Tula. The council of "maroon berets" of the Vityaz special forces detachment unanimously decided to hand over a maroon beret to the parents of the deceased comrade.

At the opening ceremony of the monument to the fallen servicemen of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, installed in a park near the headquarters of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Moscow (in the form of a nine-meter granite stele and a sculpture of a grieving mother)

the then President of Russia Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin noted the feat of Sergei Bunaev.

He was just getting started. Was going to get married. He dreamed of building his own house. The battle in the Chechen city of Argun immediately crossed out all his plans. On March 27, 2002, time stopped for Serezha Burnaev ...

He was born and lived until the age of five in Dubyonki in Mordovia. Then, together with his family, he moved to the Tula region. My parents lived very modestly. His father entered as a laborer, his mother worked as an accountant in a construction organization. They settled in an old wooden barrack. They hoped that in time everything would work out, and a better life would come for their sons.

The youngest, Seryozha, was always very open, serious beyond his years. He stood up for the weak, he stood up for the offended. I have been doing karate since the age of five. Over the years it has grown into a professional hobby. Sergey even had several belts. At the same time, he did not differ in a strong physique. The draft board determined even insufficient weight.

He dreamed of joining the army at the age of seventeen. In the military registration and enlistment office, his ardor was cooled: it’s not allowed. They said, be patient, guy, another year, everything has its time. He patiently waited. He got a job at a chemical plant. He did not shy away from any work. Didn't smoke or drink, by the way. Although it is not fashionable today ...

Seryozha really asked to join the special forces or the airborne forces. In May 2000, his dream came true. He was drafted into the special forces detachment "Vityaz" of the elite division of the internal troops. And already in November there was the first business trip to Chechnya. For a long six months.

In November 2001 - the second business trip. The first letter from Sergey came on December 12th. "I'm sorry, mom, what happened. Back in Chechnya…”

My mother, Valentina Vasilievna, was worried, terribly worried. My heart ached and hurt. And then there were the terrible dreams. She dreamed that her son was running away somewhere, she was trying to catch up with him, but she could not. The last letter arrived on February 10th. “Your unlucky son and brother are writing. I am fine. Celebrated my birthday. Still 20 years old. I love you all. I'll be there soon".

"Knights" at that time were in the Chechen city of Argun. According to the information received by them, there was a large warehouse of weapons in the basement of the city school No. 4. It was decided to involve professionals in the operation. On March 27, 70 special forces on 7 armored personnel carriers drove up to the school building. Among them was our countryman. A fight broke out in the dungeon. The commandos came into fire contact with the militants guarding the weapons depot. Resisting, the bandits threw a grenade at our fighters. In the dungeon, the death of many children was inevitable. Without hesitation, Sergeant Burnaev covered the grenade with his body. He died. But his comrades survived. And they completed the operation.

The terrible news of the death of Sergei instantly flew to Mordovia. Here, in his homeland, there are many people close and dear to him. A whole delegation from the village of Dubyonki went to the funeral in the Tula village of Zaoksky.

The funeral took place on 8 April. The day before, on Friday, one on one, without witnesses, the “Knights” said goodbye to the deceased comrade. They asked to be given this opportunity. They did not want to show their tears to his loved ones.

Sergei did not want to leave the army until he earned a maroon beret. His dream came true. True, after death.

“One of Seryozha’s friends, those who were next to him at the time of his death, was accompanied by a zinc coffin,” says the cousin of the deceased, Tatyana Shigaeva. “Together with the body, the soldiers brought into the house and the maroon beret. One of the fighters kissed him and said: “No one should touch the beret. Sergei deserved it.

Came to say goodbye to Serezha and his girlfriend Masha. His parents were waiting for their marriage, dreamed of grandchildren ...

“I don’t want anything in this life anymore,” cried his father, Alexander Semenovich.

Trouble does not come alone. The Burnaev family, which suddenly lost their son, was essentially left without a livelihood. Sergei's father recently lost his job. The mother was handed a notice of dismissal on the second day after the death of her son. They continue to live in a wooden barrack. True, the administration promises to allocate an apartment. But even in two dark barracks rooms it is now too spacious for them.

Sergey was going to return in May, to introduce the bride to his parents. Finish the house. Did not have time…

Four years ago he came to Dubyonki for the last time. I was glad how many relatives, cousins and sisters he had here.

“Let’s all get together sometime,” he suggested, “I’ll serve in the army, I’ll come and meet.”

They met at his own funeral.

P.S. By the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of September 16, 2002, for the courage and heroism shown in the performance of military duty in the North Caucasus region, Sergeant Sergey Alexandrovich Burnaev was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation (posthumously).

In the homeland of the Hero in the village of Dubyonki, a monument was erected in his honor, and in the village of Zaoksky, Tula Region, there was a memorial plaque on the building of the school where the Hero studied. Hero of Russia S. A. Burnaev is forever enrolled in the lists of his military unit of the Internal Troops. In the city of Reutov, Moscow Region, on the Alley of Heroes of the military memorial complex "To all Reutovites who died for the Fatherland" (Victory Street), a bronze bust of the hero was also installed.

Shortly before the trip, he signed a contract for service in this unit, choosing one of the most combat units of the Vityaz as a place of service - a reconnaissance company, the team of which became his second family.
