Buried waste containers have long been used in Europe and the CIS countries. They are convenient and economically feasible. Today, not only megacities, but also small regional centers in the Russian Federation are actively introducing this useful eco-friendly design into our lives.
Buried containers - a modern waste collection system
The decision to purchase buried tanks for municipal solid waste is rational and profitable.

Economic effect of an underground storage tank of a buried type
The main point when choosing an underground waste container is cost-effectiveness. A specially designed tank holds 5 m3 of solid household waste with an occupied area of 2 m3, which significantly saves space in the courtyard of a residential building.
Buried waste containers are much more economical than above-ground ones in installation and use:

Pros and cons of new generation containers

The only downside, but a very significant one, is the price.
Why regular trash cans are obsolete
Metal trash cans are outdated and cannot handle the volume of household waste that is disposed of each year. Garbage cans quickly become unusable due to corrosion and the aggressive environment of the products. Requires replacement every 2 years.
The volume of household waste is growing, and with it the number of above-ground garbage cans, which significantly reduces the space in the courtyards of residential complexes. When the tanks are overfilled, garbage accumulates around, polluting the air and the environment. The process of rotting food contributes to unsanitary conditions.
Europe and part of Russia are gradually switching to in-depth waste containers, replacing landfills. The structures are durable, strong and safe for people.
Garbage trucks for underground waste containers
Recessed tanks for MSW are more economical and convenient than conventional metal tanks. They have a number of advantages: they protect the contents from animals and birds; they are larger in size without compromising the space they occupy. But they are also serviced by special equipment.
The in-ground garbage truck is equipped with a manipulator for raising and lowering a garbage container with a weight of 2,500 to 5,000 kg. This greatly facilitates the collection and removal of waste. Allows you to carry out all manipulations for the transportation of solid waste by one person, in narrow courtyards of residential areas and with a large number of parked cars.
Until recently, Russia purchased garbage trucks equipped with CMU to work with buried garbage cans abroad. Today, the auto repair plant in Ryazhsk produces such equipment.
Platform for buried containers
The site for the pit for a buried waste container is prepared in advance. Check for the absence of telephone and electrical wires, drainage, sewer and water pipes. Observe the temperature regime, do not install below +5C°.
Container installation
Before you begin installing the underground container, remove the lid and other parts. Into the technological holes located at the bottom, insert 4 pipes 64 mm in diameter, 800 mm in length, wrap them with wire together.
Installation procedure:
- Lower the tank into the hole. Rotating, sink the pipes into the sand (gravel) to a special level. Cover each installation pipe jumper with polyester sandbags.
- Place the lid and bag on the top of the tank.
The pit cannot be filled with wet soil.
Fill the flange with concrete, marble chips, paving slabs or lay it with concrete blocks about 10 cm thick.
SanPin standards when installing a garbage container for solid waste
The accumulation of garbage is accompanied by an unpleasant odor and the presence of a large number of insects and rodents.
SanPin is a document indicating the standards for installing garbage cans. The rules stipulate how garbage receptacles should be installed in residential areas and how often they should be cleaned.
According to the current SanPin, containers must be emptied daily, located 20-100 m from parks and places with large crowds of people, located on a specially equipped site, fenced with a 1.5-meter fence on three sides, and well lit at night.
What components can be added to containers?
The waste container is constructed from a tank without seams, so there is no leakage of waste into the soil. The tank is guaranteed for 10 years. The tank contains a liner that is made of polypropylene. It has a 3-year warranty. The liner is mounted with a lifting mechanism, allowing for quick replacement.

Company LLC "PANDA LIFT"
ECOLIFT™ is an innovative system for the collection and underground storage of municipal solid waste (MSW), designed for mass use in public places.
System ECOLIFT™ works on the principle of a hydraulic lift. Waste is collected and accumulated in standard garbage containers installed on a lifting platform lowered into a sealed underground space. The trash cans located on the surface serve as garbage receptacles and send waste directly to an underground container. By operating a lifting mechanism, the management company lifts the containers to the surface for cleaning and emptying, and then lowers them back underground.
System ECOLIFT™ - developed by engineers of the PANDA LIFT company with the expectation of operation in the Russian climate (low temperatures, heavy snowfalls, icing, heavy rainfalls).
RELEVANCE OF APPLICATION
The idea of developing and implementing a new system for the collection and underground storage of solid waste in Russia came to the engineers of the PANDA LIFT company in 2012 and was caused by the urgency of the garbage problem in public places and residential areas of large cities in Russia.
There are a number of problems associated with garbage, but it is especially important to highlight the problem of cleanliness, environmental safety and aesthetics of primary waste collection points, such as city trash cans and garbage containers installed in public places with high traffic or in residential courtyards.
The overflowing garbage containers given as an example are located in a residential area (photo on the left) and along the alley, behind the Dynamo stadium, Moscow (photo on the right). Such examples are common, starting from cultural parks and alleys in the historical part of the city, ending with prestigious residential complexes.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION AND OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The basis of the system ECOLIFT™ consists of a hydraulic scissor-type lifting platform. The dimensions of the platform, lifting height and load-bearing capacity are determined based on the number of garbage containers installed on it, their type, geometric dimensions, and the total mass of waste accumulated in them.
The lifting platform is installed in a pre-prepared concrete shaft (pit), part of which is reserved for the equipment room, in which a hydraulic station and electrical panel are installed.
The monolithic shaft is completely sealed. It is protected both from external influences of groundwater and melt water, and from the effects of precipitation. The roof, installed on a platform on two (or four) supports, serves as a shaft cover. When the platform is in the lowered position, the roof hermetically closes the shaft due to a specially designed abutment structure, the “lock” type. The design of the lock was developed by PANDA LIFT engineers in such a way that its tightness cannot be compromised, it cannot become frozen, clogged with debris, or fail for other reasons.
A control console for the lifting system is installed on the surface, in close proximity to the waste bins. To remove garbage containers from the ground, the console has control buttons (raise, lower, stop). The management console can only be activated using a special access key, which is held by employees of the operating organizations.
All system elements ECOLIFT™ manufactured in anti-vandal design. There are no wires or working mechanisms of the system on the surface; only trash cans are visible.
If necessary, the system can be equipped with electronic access or personalization devices. In this case, to access the ballot boxes, the system user must attach a magnetic key or enter a code.
This option can be useful when the system is installed in places where it is used by a certain group of people (for example, residents of a specific residential complex, or employees of a certain organization, etc.).
An integral part and important option of the system ECOLIFT™ is the presence of a function to monitor the filling status of garbage containers. Special infrared sensors are triggered when the container is close to filling or is already full. When the sensors are triggered, the programmable controller can issue a command to perform the following actions:
- Transmits messages to the management company via the GSM module (SMS or E-mail messages);
- Controls the light indication indicating which of the underground containers is full;
- Blocks the electromagnetic lock of the trash can lid so that waste no longer enters the filled container.
THE LINEUP
System ECOLIFT™ designed for use with both mobile roll-out garbage containers and cargo garbage containers with a capacity of up to 20 cubic meters. The lifting platform can accommodate from 1 to 8 mobile compact containers at the same time, or one cargo container weighing up to 20 tons (when filled).
System ECOLIFT™ provides for the installation of garbage containers on the platform for separate collection of solid waste. In this case, specially marked bins (paper, glass, plastic, batteries, etc.) are installed on the surface.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
In accordance with the general requirements for hydraulic lifting devices, as well as taking into account the specific operation of the system, it is necessary to periodically check the condition and maintain the system (once every 3 months).
Maintenance includes:
- Checking the condition of metal structures, bolted and welded joints;
- Checking the condition of the hydraulic station (technical condition of the engine, components, checking the oil level, etc.);
- Checking the condition of hydraulic cylinders;
- Checking the condition of hydraulic hoses and connections;
- Testing of electrical units and components;
- Checking the system control unit;
- Checking sensors (safety, stop, etc.)

Such a check takes PANDA LIFT specialists from 2 to 4 hours and directly affects the safety, quality and service life of the system.
Underground waste collection system, thanks to the large capacity of containers, reduces transport costs. By lifting the bag, accurate and easy weighing of waste can be achieved. The product is durable, has a long service life and works very well in areas with massive construction. Key Advantage vertical container consists in the fact that the garbage is compacted under the influence of its own gravity.
Lid recessed type container for loading solid waste is light, easy to use and closes automatically. This prevents precipitation, birds, and animals from entering the system, which protects the environment. The removable bag is emptied from below precisely and neatly. This design prevents liquid spills and debris. Thanks to the vertical design of the system, older waste is located at the bottom of the container, where the low soil temperature limits the growth of bacteria and reduces odors in the summer, and prevents it from freezing in the winter.
The vertical arrangement of the structure allows for greater space savings in residential courtyards than when using surface containers, which makes it possible to increase the area of landscaping, playgrounds, parking spaces, etc.
Safe to use and operate. The filling lid locking mechanism increases safety and reduces the risk of fire. The emptying process is safe and free of risks such as heavy lids and sharp corners, faulty or poorly functioning wheels, spillage of slippery or foul-smelling waste. This system does not require the installation of elements required for container sites: fencing and a solid base.
Thanks to its shape, modern and ergonomic design, recessed container creates a favorable view of mass development areas and central streets of the city. Economic effect of an underground storage tank of a buried type:
- One person, also known as the driver, unloads garbage from the bins. Whereas at least 2-3 people are involved in unloading garbage from tanks in traditional solid waste collection systems;
- there is no such phenomenon as waste scattering during unloading, therefore there is no need for constant cleaning of solid waste sites after each waste removal;
- garbage in buried tanks is compacted under its own weight, and accordingly, the number of entrances for solid waste removal is reduced;
- When converting existing solid waste collection sites, the loading capacity can be significantly increased. And as a result, reduce the number of trips to clean tanks;
- the tanks are made of materials that are not of interest to persons involved in theft of ferrous and non-ferrous metals;

- the container is buried in the ground to a depth of 1600 mm;

- depending on the type of soil and groundwater level, a decision is made on the anchoring method;
- the bosoms of the pit are filled with suitable soil or sand; it is impossible to fill in waterlogged or clayey soil;
- the upper part around the container is finished at the discretion of the Customer (finishing with paving slabs, screenings, marble chips, asphalting).
The storage kit includes: a container body with external finishing of the above-ground part and a support ring, the main cover assembly, a lifting bag with an assembled locking device, a system for quick unloading of the storage device, brackets for anchoring.
